1 technique across 1 tactic: Collection

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attacker needs network reachability to a Windows host with the Remote Desktop service enabled and accepting connections on the RDP port (default TCP/3389); per CVSS PR:N/UI:N no credentials and no user interaction are required, so any exposed RDP listener is in scope. Limiting factors not resolvable from the supplied data: whether Network Level Authentication (NLA / CredSSP) is enforced - if NLA gates the vulnerable parser path, then an attacker would first need valid domain credentials, significantly reducing exposure; this should be confirmed against Microsoft's advisory. Hosts behind an RD Gateway, VPN, or with 3389 blocked at the perimeter are not directly reachable and therefore not exploitable from the internet.

Impact

The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated bug with high confidentiality impact only - no integrity or availability effect - which is consistent with an info-leak rather than RCE. EPSS, KEV, and SSVC data were NOT provided in the input, so exploitation probability and active-exploitation status cannot be quantified here; absence of KEV listing should not be read as confirmation that exploitation is not occurring. There is no public POC identified at time of analysis. Real-world risk is meaningful for any host exposing RDP to untrusted networks (internet-facing jump hosts, poorly segmented VDI, exposed RDS gateways), because info-leak primitives in RDP are commonly chained with separate memory-corruption bugs to bypass ASLR and enable RCE - historically a recurring pattern for this protocol. For internal-only RDP behind a VPN or RD Gateway with NLA, residual risk is lower but non-zero. Key data conflict to flag: the description says 'unauthorized attacker', and the vector says PR:N, but it does not state whether Network Level Authentication (NLA) blocks the precondition - verify with Microsoft's advisory.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker on the internet (or an adjacent network segment) sends a crafted RDP connection request to TCP/3389 on a vulnerable Windows host, with malformed length or offset fields in an early protocol PDU that drives the parser to read past the end of a buffer. The server's response, error message, or returned PDU echoes the over-read bytes, leaking fragments of process memory - potentially session tokens, heap pointers useful for defeating ASLR, or other sensitive in-memory data - which the attacker can replay across many connections to harvest data or stage a follow-on memory-corruption exploit.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 09, 2026

Information disclosure in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) allows remote unauthenticated attackers to read out-of-bounds memory over the network, potentially exposing sensitive data from the RDP service process. The flaw is reachable without authentication or user interaction across any exposed RDP endpoint, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Microsoft has assigned the issue a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.5 reflecting high confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability effect.

RemediationAI

Apply the Microsoft security updates referenced in the MSRC advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-45639 - patch available per vendor advisory; the exact patched Windows build/KB numbers are listed in that advisory and should be cross-referenced against each affected SKU before deployment. Until patches are rolled out across the fleet, restrict TCP/UDP 3389 at the network edge and from untrusted internal segments, require RDP access only through a Remote Desktop Gateway with MFA, and enforce Network Level Authentication (NLA) on all RDP listeners to require a pre-auth handshake (trade-off: legacy clients without CredSSP support will lose access). For internet-exposed jump hosts that cannot be patched immediately, consider temporarily disabling the Remote Desktop service or blocking 3389 inbound at the firewall (trade-off: remote administration interrupted until alternate access is established).

Technical ContextAI · show details

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is Microsoft's proprietary protocol (typically over TCP/3389, with optional UDP transport) used by Windows for remote graphical sessions and implemented in the Terminal Services stack (termdd.sys / rdpcorets.dll and related components). The root cause is CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read), meaning the RDP parser reads memory past the bounds of an allocated buffer - typically due to insufficient validation of attacker-controlled length, offset, or PDU field values during message parsing. Such bugs in protocol parsers commonly leak adjacent process memory (uninitialized heap contents, pointers useful for ASLR bypass, or session data) back to the attacker in protocol responses or error paths. The Microsoft-assigned 'Buffer Overflow' and 'Information Disclosure' tags align with a parser-level read primitive rather than a write/code-execution issue.

DescriptionCVE.org

Out-of-bounds read in Windows RDP allows an unauthorized attacker to disclose information over a network.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical unauthenticated information disclosure vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (CVE-2026-45639, CVSS 7.5) allows attackers to steal sensitive data from RDP service memory without authentication or user interaction. Any organization exposing RDP endpoints-particularly for remote workforce access-faces immediate risk of data exfiltration. No vendor patch is currently available, making interim network controls essential.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict RDP access via firewall to defined trusted IP ranges only, require VPN connectivity before RDP access, disable RDP where operationally feasible, implement network segmentation isolating RDP from critical systems, deploy network-based anomaly detection on RDP endpoints, and establish weekly monitoring of Microsoft security advisories for patch availability.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
