DescriptionGitHub Advisory

iccDEV provides a set of libraries and tools for working with ICC color management profiles. Prior to version 2.3.1.6, there is a heap-buffer-overflow (HBO) in icAnsiToUtf8() in the XML conversion path. The issue is triggered by a crafted ICC profile which causes icAnsiToUtf8(std::string&, char const*) to treat an input buffer as a C-string and call operations that rely on strlen()/null-termination. AddressSanitizer reports an out-of-bounds READ of size 115 past a 114-byte heap allocation, with the failure observed while running the iccToXml tool. This issue has been patched in version 2.3.1.6.

AnalysisAI

Heap buffer overflow in iccDEV's icAnsiToUtf8() function allows local attackers to cause denial of service via a crafted ICC color profile processed by the iccToXml tool. The vulnerability exists in versions prior to 2.3.1.6 and stems from unsafe string handling that treats non-null-terminated buffers as C-strings, triggering out-of-bounds memory reads. CVSS 6.2 with local attack vector and no authentication required; vendor-released patch available in version 2.3.1.6.

Technical ContextAI

iccDEV is a library suite for ICC (International Color Consortium) color management profile manipulation. The vulnerability resides in the XML conversion code path, specifically the icAnsiToUtf8() function which accepts a string reference and character pointer. The root cause is CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read) triggered when the function applies C-string operations (strlen, null-termination checks) to buffers that lack proper null-termination. A malformed ICC profile can trigger the XML conversion handler to process buffer data without validating bounds, causing AddressSanitizer to detect reads 115 bytes beyond a 114-byte heap allocation. This is a classic buffer over-read vulnerability in low-level string handling code common in C/C++ image processing libraries.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade iccDEV to version 2.3.1.6 or later. Users building from source should apply pull request #740 (https://github.com/InternationalColorConsortium/iccDEV/pull/740) which contains the fix. Users unable to patch immediately should avoid processing ICC profiles from untrusted sources or restrict iccToXml execution to trusted color profile repositories only. Validate ICC profile files using external tools before processing with iccDEV tooling if patching is delayed. See GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-p9wm-xfv4-43qg at https://github.com/InternationalColorConsortium/iccDEV/security/advisories/GHSA-p9wm-xfv4-43qg for additional remediation guidance.
