DescriptionCVE.org

Issue summary: During processing of a crafted CMS EnvelopedData message with KeyTransportRecipientInfo a NULL pointer dereference can happen.

Impact summary: Applications that process attacker-controlled CMS data may crash before authentication or cryptographic operations occur resulting in Denial of Service.

When a CMS EnvelopedData message that uses KeyTransportRecipientInfo with RSA-OAEP encryption is processed, the optional parameters field of RSA-OAEP SourceFunc algorithm identifier is examined without checking for its presence. This results in a NULL pointer dereference if the field is missing.

Applications and services that call CMS_decrypt() on untrusted input (e.g., S/MIME processing or CMS-based protocols) are vulnerable.

The FIPS modules in 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 and 3.0 are not affected by this issue, as the affected code is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary.

AnalysisAI

NULL pointer dereference in OpenSSL CMS EnvelopedData processing enables unauthenticated remote denial of service. Affects OpenSSL 1.0.2 through 3.6.x when processing attacker-controlled CMS messages with KeyTransportRecipientInfo using RSA-OAEP encryption. Missing optional parameters field in algorithm identifier triggers crash before authentication occurs. Applications calling CMS_decrypt() on untrusted input (S/MIME, CMS-based protocols) vulnerable. FIPS modules unaffected. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. EPSS indicates low observed exploitation activity.

Technical ContextAI

Root cause: CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference during RSA-OAEP SourceFunc algorithm identifier parsing in CMS layer. Code unconditionally accesses optional parameters field without presence validation when KeyTransportRecipientInfo envelope processed. Vulnerability exists outside FIPS module boundary in non-FIPS OpenSSL builds across 1.0.2, 1.1.1, and 3.x series.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Upgrade to OpenSSL 1.0.2zp, 1.1.1zg, 3.0.20, 3.3.7, 3.4.5, 3.5.6, or 3.6.2 depending on branch. Upstream fixes committed across branches (commit ea7b4ea4, fd2f1a6c, af2a5fec, 2e39b7a6, 01194a8f). Workaround: If immediate patching infeasible, restrict CMS_decrypt() calls to trusted input sources only. Implement input validation and sanitization before CMS processing. Monitor for abnormal termination in CMS-handling services. Official security advisory: https://openssl-library.org/news/secadv/20260407.txt. Ubuntu users consult USN-8155-1: https://ubuntu.com/security/notices/USN-8155-1. Prioritize patching for internet-facing services processing S/MIME or CMS data from untrusted sources.
