DescriptionCVE.org

Buffer overflow for some Intel(R) QAT software drivers for Windows before version 1.13 within Ring 3: User Applications may allow a denial of service. Unprivileged software adversary with an authenticated user combined with a low complexity attack may enable denial of service. This result may potentially occur via local access when attack requirements are not present without special internal knowledge and requires no user interaction. The potential vulnerability may impact the confidentiality (low), integrity (low) and availability (high) of the vulnerable system, resulting in subsequent system confidentiality (none), integrity (none) and availability (none) impacts.

AnalysisAI

Buffer overflow in Intel QAT (Quick Assist Technology) software drivers for Windows before version 1.13 allows an authenticated local user to trigger a denial of service condition via the Ring 3 user-application interface. The flaw (CWE-120) resides in the user-space driver layer and does not require special internal knowledge or user interaction to exploit, though local authenticated access is a hard prerequisite. No active exploitation has been identified (not in CISA KEV), and EPSS remains at the 3rd percentile, placing real-world risk firmly in the low-to-medium range despite a moderate CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9.

Technical ContextAI

Intel QAT (Quick Assist Technology) is a hardware-accelerated offload engine for cryptographic operations (AES, SHA, RSA) and data compression, commonly deployed on Intel Xeon server platforms. The driver stack spans kernel-mode components and Ring 3 (user-space) application interfaces, and it is this user-space layer that contains the vulnerable code path. CWE-120 (Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input, 'Classic Buffer Overflow') indicates that caller-supplied data is copied into a fixed-size buffer without adequate length validation, permitting memory corruption. The CPE entry (cpe:2.3:a:n/a:intel(r)_qat_software_drivers_for_windows) confirms the affected artifact is the Windows software driver package, not the Linux counterpart or firmware. Because the flaw is confined to Ring 3, kernel integrity is not directly threatened by this specific bug, limiting the worst-case impact to a process- or system-level availability disruption rather than privilege escalation.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is to upgrade Intel QAT software drivers for Windows to version 1.13 or later, as confirmed by Intel advisory INTEL-SA-01387 (https://intel.com/content/www/us/en/security-center/advisory/intel-sa-01387.html). Organizations unable to immediately patch should consider restricting local interactive access to systems hosting the QAT driver stack, particularly in shared or multi-tenant Windows environments where low-privileged users could interact with QAT APIs; note that this control does not address service accounts or software running with low privileges that already have access to the driver interface. Disabling or uninstalling the QAT software driver on systems that do not actively use hardware acceleration for cryptographic or compression workloads is a viable compensating control with the trade-off of losing QAT-accelerated performance. No workarounds at the driver configuration level are documented in the available references.
