V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Numeric truncation prevention
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an attacker-controlled (or spoofing-capable) authoritative DNS server able to return a negative answer of exactly 65536 bytes to the victim's recursive BIND resolver, which triggers the 16-bit length truncation to a 0-byte negative cache entry and a crash on subsequent read. No authentication or user interaction is needed (PR:N/UI:N) and default configurations are affected, but the target must be a resolver performing recursion against untrusted/attacker-influenced domains and must actually read the poisoned cache entry. Limiting factors: resolvers restricted to trusted authoritative servers, or not exposed to attacker-controlled zones, reduce reachability; the flaw is fixed in BIND 9.20.29 and 9.21.26. |
| Impact | This is a well-calibrated, genuine denial-of-service priority for exposed BIND resolvers. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 7.5) is availability-only and matches the described impact: a remote, unauthenticated attacker triggers an abort of the named process with no confidentiality or integrity effect. CWE-197 (numeric truncation) is consistent with the mechanism - a negative answer of exactly 65536 bytes wraps a 16-bit length field to 0, producing a 0-byte negative cache entry that crashes named when read. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are provided, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation at this time; the risk is a reliably-crashable service rather than a mass-exploited one. The one signal tension: the input Tags label this 'Information Disclosure,' which directly contradicts the CVSS vector (C:N) - this is a crash/DoS, not a data-disclosure issue, and that tag should be disregarded. Exploitation does require the attacker to control (or successfully spoof responses from) an authoritative server that the target resolver queries, a real but modest prerequisite for a recursive resolver reachable to untrusted domains. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operates or controls an authoritative DNS server for a domain and lures/triggers a victim's recursive BIND resolver into querying a crafted name. The malicious authoritative server returns a negative answer sized to exactly 65536 bytes, which the resolver stores as a corrupt 0-byte negative cache entry; the next read of that entry aborts named, taking down DNS resolution. No authentication or user interaction is required and no public exploit code is currently identified. |

Remote denial of service in ISC BIND 9 lets an attacker-controlled (or spoofing-capable) authoritative DNS server crash a recursive resolver by returning a negative answer of exactly 65536 bytes, which named caches as a zero-length entry and later aborts on when the entry is read. The flaw affects 9.11.0 through 9.18.50, 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, and the corresponding -S1 subscription releases, requires no authentication or user interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5), and is present in default configurations, though reachability is limited to resolvers that actually recurse against attacker-influenced or spoofable zones and then read the poisoned cache entry. Vendor patches are available (9.20.29 and 9.21.26); no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the impact is availability-only with no confidentiality or integrity loss.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released fixes: upgrade to BIND 9.20.29 (https://downloads.isc.org/isc/bind9/9.20.29) or BIND 9.21.26 (https://downloads.isc.org/isc/bind9/9.21.26) as appropriate for your deployment branch, and consult the ISC advisory at https://kb.isc.org/docs/cve-2026-19667 for branch-specific maintenance releases covering the 9.18.x and -S1 lines. These are rolling stable/development branches, so validate the upgrade against your DNSSEC and zone-transfer configuration before production rollout, and restart named after upgrading to clear any already-poisoned negative cache entries. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce reachability by restricting recursion to trusted clients via allow-recursion/allow-query ACLs (trade-off: open or broadly reachable resolvers stop serving external clients) and forward queries to a trusted upstream resolver instead of performing full recursion against arbitrary authoritative servers (trade-off: adds dependency on the forwarder and changes DNSSEC validation and cache behavior); also monitor named for unexpected aborts and systemd/init auto-restarts, which are the visible symptom of an attempted trigger.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is a numeric truncation error (CWE-197) in named, the daemon of ISC BIND 9. When a remote authoritative server returns a negative answer (NXDOMAIN/NODATA-style response) whose length is exactly 65536 bytes - i.e. 2^16, the first value that cannot be represented in a 16-bit length field - the size wraps to zero, and BIND stores a negative cache entry of 0 bytes instead of rejecting or re-encoding the message. The message is retained in the negative response cache used for recursive resolution, and reading that malformed zero-length entry on a subsequent lookup causes the daemon to abort, terminating the resolver. Notably, a 16-bit length prefix is also the wire encoding used for DNS messages, so a 65536-byte payload is the natural boundary where this class of truncation manifests in DNS implementations. CPE data identifies the affected platform as cpe:2.3:a:isc:bind_9:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering the BIND 9.11.x, 9.18.x, 9.20.x and 9.21.x lines (including the -S1 subscription editions). Because the defect is on the caching/parsing path rather than the query path, it can be triggered by traffic that a resolver would ordinarily process as legitimate recursion, and exploitation is a single-shot crash rather than a memory-corruption primitive.

DescriptionCVE.org
If an attacker-controlled authoritative server can produce a negative answer that is exactly 65536 bytes, then a flaw in named results in a negative cache entry of 0 bytes. When this entry is subsequently read, named aborts. This issue affects BIND 9 versions 9.11.0 through 9.18.50, 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, 9.11.3-S1 through 9.18.50-S1, and 9.20.9-S1 through 9.20.27-S1.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity flaw in ISC BIND 9, the DNS software underpinning many organizations' internal and external name resolution, allows any internet-reaching or spoofing-capable DNS server to crash a recursing resolver with a single crafted response - no credentials or user action required. Because BIND recursers typically sit in front of virtually all outbound application traffic, each crash translates directly into organization-wide outages of web, email, VPN, and cloud service access until the service restarts, and repeated exploitation can produce sustained or self-propagating disruption at near-zero cost to the attacker. The exposure is availability-only - no data theft or tampering - but the operational and customer-facing consequences of recurring DNS outages justify treating remediation as urgent.
