Exploitation Conditions

The victim must be a recursive BIND 9 resolver performing DNSSEC validation of a signed zone. Exploitation requires the attacker to control (or be on-path to) the authoritative server answering the resolver's query so it can return the specific malformed sequence: a valid wildcard answer with a signed NSEC3 proof followed by an unsigned NSEC record at the same owner name. Limiting factors: the resolver must actually query a zone the attacker influences, and the malformed response must reach it - an arbitrary external client cannot trigger the crash by sending queries alone. Affected versions are BIND 9.11.0-9.18.50, 9.20.0-9.20.27, 9.21.0-9.21.25, and the -S1 subscription builds 9.11.3-S1-9.18.50-S1 and 9.20.9-S1-9.20.27-S1; fixed in 9.20.29 and 9.21.26.

Impact

This is a genuine remote-triggerable denial-of-service in ISC BIND 9, one of the most widely deployed DNS server implementations. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) is well-calibrated: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction, availability-only impact from an unexpected program exit (CWE-617, reachable assertion). No confidentiality or integrity impact, so despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag in the input, this is purely a crash/DoS - the tag is contradicted by C:N/I:N. Signals otherwise align cleanly: no EPSS score, no KEV listing, and no public exploit - so there is no evidence of active exploitation, and the score reflects potential rather than observed impact. The practical trigger caveat is important: the crash occurs on the resolver side only after it queries a DNSSEC-signed zone whose authoritative server returns a specifically malformed response (valid wildcard answer + signed NSEC3 proof followed by an unsigned NSEC at the same owner name). An attacker must therefore control or influence an authoritative server the victim resolver queries, or be on-path - the resolver cannot be crashed by an arbitrary off-path client sending queries. This lowers real-world abusability somewhat below a pure 'send one packet' DoS, but AC:L/PR:N remain correct because crafting the malicious authoritative response is straightforward once you control a zone the target resolves. Priority is real for exposed recursive resolvers performing DNSSEC validation; patch promptly.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operates (or compromises) an authoritative DNS server for a DNSSEC-signed zone, then induces a victim BIND resolver to query a wildcard name in that zone (e.g. by embedding a hostname in a link or email). The malicious authoritative server returns a valid wildcard answer with a signed NSEC3 proof followed by an unsigned NSEC record at the same owner name, tripping an assertion in named and causing the resolver process to exit. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; attack complexity is low but requires attacker-controlled authoritative data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

Denial of service in ISC BIND 9 recursive resolvers affects versions 9.11.0 through 9.18.50, 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, and the subscription builds 9.11.3-S1 through 9.18.50-S1 and 9.20.9-S1 through 9.20.27-S1. A validating resolver can be crashed when an authoritative server it queries returns a valid wildcard answer with a signed NSEC3 proof immediately followed by an unsigned NSEC record at the same owner name, causing an unexpected program exit via a reachable assertion (CWE-617). The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) rates this 7.5, availability-only, and exploitation requires the attacker to control or be on-path to the authoritative server answering the resolver's query, so an arbitrary external client cannot trigger the crash by sending queries alone; no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are BIND 9.20.29 and 9.21.26 (downloads at https://downloads.isc.org/isc/bind9/9.20.29 and https://downloads.isc.org/isc/bind9/9.21.26), with the advisory at https://kb.isc.org/docs/cve-2026-80274. Administrators on the 9.18 or 9.11 branches should note that the provided references list no fixed 9.18 or 9.11 release, so they must migrate to a supported branch or contact ISC for guidance. For truly validated deployments, the only reliable fix is upgrading; disabling DNSSEC validation removes the vulnerable code path but also eliminates DNSSEC integrity protection, allowing spoofed DNS answers, so it is a last resort only for non-security-critical resolvers. Because exploitation requires an attacker-controlled or on-path authoritative server for a zone the resolver queries, reducing the resolver's query surface (for example, forcing it to use trusted forwarders or limiting recursive service to legitimate clients) can lower exposure but is not a substitute for patching. The tag Information Disclosure does not reflect an assessed confidentiality impact for this CVE.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The core technology is DNSSEC validation in recursive resolvers. A validating BIND 9 resolver that receives a wildcard answer from a signed zone must validate it using NSEC3 closest-encloser proofs, which are signed records that prove no closer match exists. An NSEC record inside a signed zone is itself expected to be signed; an unsigned NSEC at the same owner name as a signed NSEC3 proof is a contradictory state that the resolver's validation logic was not designed to handle. CWE-617 (Reachable Assertion) indicates the code hits an assert() or similar fatal check, terminating the named process rather than returning a validation failure. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:isc:bind_9, covering the 9.11, 9.18, 9.20 and 9.21 branches including the -S1 subscription builds. Some public feeds tag this record as Information Disclosure, but the CVSS vector and the provided description describe only an availability impact from a process exit; no data-exposure impact is supported by the references.

DescriptionCVE.org

If a BIND resolver sends a query for a DNSSEC-signed authoritative zone, and the authoritative server replies with a valid wildcard answer and signed NSEC3 proof, followed by an unsigned NSEC at the same owner name, it will trigger an unexpected program exit. This issue affects BIND 9 versions 9.11.0 through 9.18.50, 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, 9.11.3-S1 through 9.18.50-S1, and 9.20.9-S1 through 9.20.27-S1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

All supported ISC BIND 9 recursive resolver branches in use across the organization - including the 9.11, 9.18, 9.20, and 9.21 lines and their subscription builds - can be forced into an unexpected program exit by a malformed DNSSEC response, taking internal name resolution offline for anyone served by that resolver. The flaw is unauthenticated and availability-only: integrity and confidentiality are unaffected, and a crash can be triggered only by an attacker who controls or sits on-path to an authoritative name server the resolver queries, meaning the practical exposure is concentrated in environments that resolve large volumes of external domains or that rely on a small number of centralized resolvers with no failover. Leadership should care because a single successful trigger degrades a foundational service that most business applications, VPN authentication, and cloud connectivity silently depend on, and the vendor has already published remediation.
