| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) the Tutor LMS plugin installed and active at version 4.0.5 or earlier; (2) the WordPress AJAX endpoint wp-admin/admin-ajax.php reachable over the network - true by default for any internet-facing WordPress site; (3) the tutor_course_filter_ajax action registered, which occurs automatically on plugin activation with no additional configuration. No authentication, elevated privileges, special non-default configuration, or prior account is required. The key limiting factor is the zero-argument function invocation constraint - only PHP callables that accept zero arguments or read from superglobals (such as $_POST) can be invoked, preventing direct OS command execution via functions like system() or exec(). Account creation via edit_user() is limited to subscriber-level, not administrator privilege, so direct site takeover in a single step is not possible without chaining to additional vulnerabilities. |
| Impact | The NVD CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) accurately reflects the unauthenticated, network-accessible, zero-complexity attack surface but arguably understates real-world integrity impact given persistent account creation capability. The zero-argument invocation constraint is the primary severity limiter - functions like system(), exec(), and shell_exec() require arguments and cannot be directly invoked, preventing straightforward OS command execution. However, the edit_user() pathway effectively bypasses this constraint by reading attacker-controlled POST data, which is a material finding beyond what the CVSS score communicates. EPSS data was not provided in the available intelligence; risk from that signal cannot be assessed. There is no CISA KEV listing, and no explicit POC code was identified, but Wordfence's disclosure with specific file paths and line numbers in the WordPress plugin repository constitutes near-POC technical detail. The attack requires no special configuration beyond the plugin being active, and WordPress AJAX endpoints are exposed by default on all internet-facing installations. This represents a real, immediate priority for any site running Tutor LMS 4.0.5 or earlier, with a clear patch path to 4.0.6. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker sends a crafted POST request to the WordPress AJAX endpoint (wp-admin/admin-ajax.php) with the action parameter set to tutor_course_filter_ajax, including POST body keys engineered to overwrite the $method_map and $context variables in the template scope via extract(). With those variables under attacker control, the template's $method_map[$context]() call is redirected to WordPress's edit_user() function, which reads account creation fields directly from the attacker's POST data, resulting in a persistent subscriber-level account being registered on the target site with no prior authentication required. The attack is fully automatable and scriptable against any network-reachable WordPress installation running Tutor LMS 4.0.5 or earlier. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 28, 2026
Unauthenticated remote PHP function invocation in the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin (all versions up to and including 4.0.5) allows any internet-accessible attacker to call arbitrary zero-argument PHP functions server-side via a missing-authorization AJAX handler combined with extract()-based variable injection into a template scope. The most critical demonstrated impact is persistent subscriber-level account creation through WordPress core's edit_user() function, which reads POST parameters directly, enabling unauthenticated user registration on any affected site. No CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis, but Wordfence's detailed technical disclosure with specific file paths and line numbers substantially lowers the barrier for independent exploit development against the 6.5 CVSS-rated but trivially accessible unauthenticated attack surface.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Tutor LMS to version 4.0.6 or later; the fix is evidenced by the trac changeset between the 4.0.5 and 4.0.6 tags (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?old_path=%2Ftutor/tags/4.0.5&new_path=%2Ftutor/tags/4.0.6), though this version has not been confirmed via an explicit vendor changelog entry - confirm via the WordPress plugin repository before deploying. Monitor the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/65f68a49-8ded-479f-a9c3-187703bfae65 for updated guidance. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, block unauthenticated POST requests to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php where the action parameter equals tutor_course_filter_ajax at the WAF or web server level; this eliminates the attack vector but will break the course filter functionality for legitimate users. A secondary control is to restrict the WordPress AJAX endpoint to authenticated sessions only using server-level authentication guards, though this may also break legitimate plugin functionality and requires testing.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability chains two weaknesses in the Tutor LMS plugin by Themeum. First, the tutor_course_filter_ajax WordPress AJAX action registered in Course_Filter.php (lines 58 and 224) lacks any nonce verification or capability check, making it accessible to unauthenticated requests. Second, the handler passes unsanitized POST parameters to tutor_load_template() in tutor-template-functions.php, where PHP's extract() is called on attacker-controlled array keys at lines 118 and 128 - a well-known PHP anti-pattern that overwrites local variables in scope. The downstream template single-content-loader.php then executes the construct $method_map[$context]() at lines 30 and 71, an indirect variable function call. Because an attacker controls both $method_map and $context via extract() injection, they can redirect this call to any zero-argument PHP callable. The particular exploit path to account creation uses WordPress's edit_user(), which reads account fields from $_POST superglobals, making it effectively attacker-parameterized despite the zero-argument calling convention. The root cause class is CWE-74 (Injection via downstream component). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:themeum:tutor_lms_-_elearning_and_online_course_solution:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all versions through 4.0.5.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Tutor LMS - eLearning and online course solution plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Remote Code Execution limited to zero-argument function invocation in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.5 via the tutor_course_filter_ajax AJAX action. This is due to missing authorization on the handler combined with unsanitized array keys being passed to extract() inside tutor_load_template(), allowing attacker-controlled POST data to overwrite the local $template variable and, in the resulting templates/single-content-loader.php template, the $method_map and $context variables invoked at $method_map[$context](). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to call an arbitrary zero-argument PHP function server-side and, via WordPress core edit_user(), to create a persistent subscriber-level account from request parameters.
