Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE
Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the target PostgreSQL instance is running version 17.x before 17.11 or 18.x before 18.5 - versions prior to 17 are unaffected; (2) pg_hba.conf is configured to require GSSAPI authentication for the relevant host/database combination; and (3) the server's TLS configuration is more permissive than the GSSAPI configuration, creating the mismatch that permits the downgrade. The attacker must also hold valid PostgreSQL credentials (PR:L), ruling out unauthenticated exploitation. What limits exploitation: the high attack complexity (AC:H) of requiring the specific TLS/GSS configuration mismatch, the need for a pre-existing authenticated database account, and the requirement for a GSSAPI-configured deployment - organisations not using Kerberos/GSSAPI are not exposed regardless of version.

Impact

The NVD CVSS 3.1 score of 4.2 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) accurately characterises this as a moderate-severity authentication downgrade, not a critical breach. The AC:H metric is significant: exploitation requires a specific configuration state where TLS settings are more permissive than GSSAPI settings - a non-default condition that requires both GSSAPI to be mandated in pg_hba.conf and TLS to be independently configured with weaker requirements. PR:L further limits exposure to users who already hold valid database credentials. The confidentiality and integrity impacts are both Low, reflecting that the attacker does not gain elevated access but does circumvent the intended security boundary. No EPSS data was provided in source intelligence, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV and no public proof-of-concept code has been identified. The 'Information Disclosure' tag in source data is consistent with data transiting over TLS without GSSAPI integrity sealing. Real-world risk is meaningful for organisations relying on Kerberos/GSSAPI for compliance or regulatory authentication posture, but this is not a mass-exploitation candidate given the complexity and authentication prerequisites.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated database user on an enterprise network where pg_hba.conf mandates GSSAPI (Kerberos) authentication connects to the PostgreSQL server using a client that initiates a direct TLS session rather than a GSSAPI handshake. If the server's TLS configuration is more permissive than its GSS policy, the server accepts the connection under TLS-only protection, bypassing the GSSAPI mutual authentication and message integrity guarantees. The user then exchanges data with the server without the Kerberos-level integrity enforcement that the administrator believed was enforced. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 13, 2026

PostgreSQL's GSSAPI authentication enforcement can be bypassed in versions 17.x and 18.x, allowing an authenticated database user to establish a connection protected only by TLS despite pg_hba.conf explicitly requiring GSSAPI. The bypass is achieved by initiating a direct TLS connection rather than a GSSAPI handshake, causing the server to accept the weaker protection profile when TLS settings are more permissive than GSS settings. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV listing have been identified at time of analysis; the EPSS score was not provided in source data.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to PostgreSQL 18.5 or PostgreSQL 17.11, which are the vendor-released patched versions explicitly named in the advisory. The official advisory is available at https://www.postgresql.org/support/security/CVE-2026-14681/. As a compensating control where immediate upgrade is not feasible, administrators can align TLS settings to be no more permissive than GSSAPI settings in pg_hba.conf, removing the configuration mismatch that enables the downgrade path; note that this may restrict connectivity for clients that currently rely on TLS-only connections. Alternatively, restricting network access to the PostgreSQL port (default 5432) to only trusted hosts that are confirmed to initiate proper GSSAPI handshakes reduces exposure. Neither workaround fully resolves the underlying enforcement flaw and both carry operational trade-offs in heterogeneous client environments.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-924 (Improper Enforcement of Message Integrity During Transmission in a Communication Channel) describes the root cause: the server fails to enforce the negotiated security level when an alternative channel is established first. PostgreSQL's GSSAPI support implements Kerberos-based mutual authentication and message integrity via the Generic Security Services API, typically used in Microsoft Active Directory and MIT Kerberos enterprise environments - consistent with the 'Microsoft' tag in source intelligence. The pg_hba.conf file is the server-side access control configuration that specifies required authentication methods per client host and database. The flaw lies in the handshake ordering: when a client opens a direct TLS connection before GSSAPI negotiation, the server's integrity enforcement logic fails to reject the downgraded path, accepting TLS-only semantics even though pg_hba.conf demands GSSAPI. Affected CPE covers PostgreSQL major versions 17 and 18 only; versions prior to PostgreSQL 17 are confirmed unaffected per the advisory.

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper enforcement of message integrity in PostgreSQL GSSAPI support allows a user to negotiate GSSAPI contrary to pg_hba.conf rules, via initial direct TLS connection. Despite a pg_hba.conf that appears to require GSSAPI, the connection may exchange data over TLS encryption alone. If the TLS settings are more permissive than the GSS settings, the connection may continue with lesser protection. Within major versions 17-18, minor versions before PostgreSQL 18.5 and 17.11 are affected. Versions before PostgreSQL 17 are unaffected.
