| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete conditions must hold. (1) The Parse Server deployment must use the MongoDB storage adapter - PostgreSQL is not affected because it rejects such writes. (2) The attacker must have write access to the target object: either the class-level permissions/ACL allow public writes (enabling unauthenticated exploitation) or the caller otherwise holds write access. (3) The write must use a dot notation key whose value is null and whose parent field is a non-object/non-array field - a Pointer, Number, String, Date, or Boolean field, or an internal field such as createdAt/updatedAt or ACL (e.g. {"owner.sub": null} or {"createdAt.sub": null}). Limiting factors: it is MongoDB-specific, requires write permission on the class/object, and affected deployments can reduce exposure by restricting writes via class-level permissions and ACLs or by rejecting such field names in a beforeSave trigger; the vendor states there is no configuration workaround and upgrading is the recommended complete fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority integrity/availability issue, not a critical one. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L, base 6.3) describes a network-reachable flaw with no privileges required (PR:N) but with an attack requirement present (AT:P), which aligns with the advisory's condition that the target class or object must permit the write - either public writes for unauthenticated clients or any client already holding write access. There is NO confidentiality impact (VC:N), and the vendor scored only limited availability impact (VA:L); in my own assessment the data-corruption aspect also warrants a limited integrity impact. KEV status is NOT listed in the input, so this is not confirmed actively exploited. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data. The references include a GitHub Security Advisory, two fix PRs, and a VulnCheck advisory, but none is marked as confirmed working exploit code, so no public exploit is identified. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a real-but-non-urgent fix. Net: prioritize patching within a normal cycle, weighted higher for MongoDB-backed deployments that allow public or broad write access. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with write access to a MongoDB-backed Parse Server class - including an unauthenticated client where class-level permissions or ACLs permit public writes - sends an object create or update containing a dot notation key with a null value beneath a scalar field (e.g. {"owner.sub": null}). Field type validation is skipped, so MongoDB stores a sub-document under that field, corrupting a Pointer/Number/String/Date/Boolean value, or if aimed at an internal date field makes the object fail every read. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the trigger pattern is fully described in the vendor advisory and regression tests. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Parse Server deployments backed by MongoDB can have stored field values corrupted by a write that uses a dot notation key with a null value beneath a field that is not an object or array, such as a Pointer, Number, String, Date or Boolean field, or an internal field like createdAt or the ACL. The flaw is an input-validation gap (CWE-20): the same key with a non-null value was already rejected, but the null case bypassed field type validation and MongoDB then wrote a sub-document beneath the scalar field, which can make reads return a sub-document instead of the expected value, render an object entirely unreadable when an internal date field is hit, or break later atomic operations on a number field. The CVSS 4.0 score is 6.3 and the independently assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L: an unauthenticated remote caller can trigger it where class-level permissions or ACLs permit public writes, otherwise the attacker must already hold write access to the affected object, and PostgreSQL deployments are not affected because they reject such writes. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis (not in CISA KEV), and vendor patches are released in 8.6.111 and 9.10.6-alpha.3.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release: Parse Server 8.6.111 for the 8.x line, or 9.10.6-alpha.3 (a pre-release) for the 9.x line, per advisory GHSA-655c-2xf3-77x9 and the pull requests 10804 and 10805. The vendor states there is no configuration workaround and that upgrading is the recommended complete fix; compensating reductions of exposure are to restrict write access through class-level permissions and ACLs (which limits exposure but breaks any clients that legitimately write to those classes or objects) or to reject incoming field names containing dot notation for non-object/non-array parents in a beforeSave Cloud Code trigger (which blocks the malformed write pattern but must be scoped carefully so legitimate nested object and array updates are not rejected). Because exploitation requires write access, deployments that rely on public writes should treat patching as urgent enough to schedule within the current monthly cycle rather than deferring.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Parse Server is an open-source Node.js backend that exposes a REST and SDK API over a database; with the MongoDB adapter, client-supplied object writes are translated into MongoDB update documents, where dotted keys such as "owner.sub" are interpreted as paths into nested sub-documents. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation: Parse's schema field type validation was applied to dot notation keys with non-null values but skipped when the value was null, so a null-valued dotted key whose parent field is a Pointer, Number, String, Date, Boolean, or an internal field (createdAt/updatedAt, ACL) was accepted. MongoDB then created a sub-document beneath a field whose declared schema type is a scalar, corrupting the stored representation - subsequent reads of a pointer field return a sub-document rather than a pointer, a null key beneath an internal date field makes every read of the object fail, and later atomic operations against a corrupted number field also fail. The upstream fix (pull requests 10804 for the 9.x line and 10805 for the 8.x line) extends field type validation to null-valued dot notation keys so the write is rejected with an INCORRECT_TYPE validation error, matching prior behavior for non-null values; delete operations and whole-field null values are explicitly unchanged. The trigger requires a MongoDB-backed deployment, write access to the object, and the specific null dotted-key shape - PostgreSQL is not affected because it rejects the write outright.

DescriptionCVE.org
Parse Server before 8.6.111 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.3 on MongoDB skips field type validation for null-valued dot notation keys, allowing sub-documents to be written beneath Pointer, Number, String, Date, or Boolean fields. Any client with write access, including unauthenticated clients where public writes are permitted, can corrupt field values, make objects unreadable via internal date fields, or break atomic operations on number fields.
