Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that MCPHub's passthroughHeaders (or openapi.passthroughHeaders) feature be used and that a server entry be configured to forward sensitive headers such as Authorization, Cookie, x-api-key, x-auth-token, proxy-authorization, or the configured bearer header. In vulnerable versions (<=1.0.45/1.1.7) this configuration was not restricted to admins, so a non-admin server owner could set up a forwarding server. The leak is triggered only when a victim user actually invokes a tool on the maliciously-configured server (UI:P/UI:R), at which point their credentials are passed to the attacker-controlled upstream. Limiting factors: the attack needs the ability to create/configure a server entry in the hub, needs victim invocation, affects only deployments that use header passthrough, and discloses a single credential header per invocation (confidentiality-only, no integrity or availability impact). The fix (1.1.8) both filters sensitive headers and restricts header-forwarding configuration to admins; upgrading is the vendor-recommended remediation.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority information-disclosure issue, not a high-urgency emergency. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L) rates it 5.3 (medium): network-reachable and low-complexity, but with only low confidentiality impact and a required user interaction (UI:P), and no integrity or availability impact. The source diff confirms the mechanism - MCPHub's passthroughHeaders feature forwarded caller-supplied headers to upstream servers without excluding sensitive ones (authorization, cookie, x-api-key, x-auth-token, proxy-authorization, and the configured bearer header), and server/header configuration was not restricted to admins - so a server owner could cause an invoking user's platform credentials to be forwarded to an attacker-controlled upstream. Decision signals are muted: vuln.today priority is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. A public PoC reference exists (0xGenesi write-up) but it is not verified as working exploit code. One signal conflict to verify: the input vector states PR:N, but the fix gates passthrough-header configuration behind admin privileges and the realistic attack requires an authenticated server-creation capability, so the practical privilege requirement is likely higher than PR:N implies - treat the 'unauthenticated' framing with caution.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A non-admin MCPHub user creates or imports an HTTP/OpenAPI server entry configured to pass through sensitive caller headers (e.g. Authorization or Cookie) to an endpoint they control. When another user invokes a tool on that server through the hub, MCPHub forwards their platform credentials to the attacker's upstream, where they are harvested. A public PoC reference describing OpenAPI passthroughHeaders credential exfiltration exists but is not verified as working exploit code; exploitation depends on the victim actually invoking the malicious server (UI:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Header passthrough in samanhappy MCPHub through 1.0.45 and 1.1.7 allows a non-admin server owner to configure an upstream server that forwards the invoking user's credentials - Authorization, Cookie, x-api-key, x-auth-token, proxy-authorization, or the deployment's configured bearer header - to an attacker-controlled endpoint. Exploitation requires a low-privileged account able to create or modify a server entry plus a victim actually invoking a tool on that server, after which a single credential header per invocation is disclosed (confidentiality-only, no integrity or availability impact; assessed CVSS 5.3). A public proof-of-concept writeup reference exists; it is not verified as working exploit code, there is no CISA KEV listing, and the vendor fix is released in v1.1.8 (commit 040f7b9ae004070bdfe5084cde6bc2c609f78e76).

RemediationAI

Upgrade to MCPHub 1.1.8 or later (release https://github.com/samanhappy/mcphub/releases/tag/v1.1.8, patch commit https://github.com/samanhappy/mcphub/commit/040f7b9ae004070bdfe5084cde6bc2c609f78e76), which both blocks forwarding of sensitive headers and restricts caller-header-forwarding server configurations to admins per the vendor advisory. Until upgrading, restrict the ability to create, update, batch-create or import server entries to trusted administrators only (the pre-fix code did not enforce this, so it must be enforced externally, e.g. by gating the hub's management API/UI behind an admin-only reverse proxy - note this does not fix the header filtering itself); audit all existing server definitions for passthroughHeaders or openapi.passthroughHeaders entries that include authorization, proxy-authorization, cookie, x-auth-token, x-api-key or the configured bearer header name and remove them, accepting that legitimate header-forwarding integrations will break; and rotate any credentials believed to have been forwarded, since disclosure is confidentiality-only and leaves no log-visible integrity change. The upstream commit also adds regression tests under tests/controllers/serverController.test.ts that can be used to confirm the fix version is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MCPHub is a Node.js/TypeScript hub that aggregates and proxies Model Context Protocol servers, including OpenAPI-backed clients (src/clients/openapi.ts) and tool-call handling (src/services/mcpService.ts). Its passthroughHeaders and openapi.passthroughHeaders configuration options let a server entry forward caller-supplied HTTP headers upstream, which is legitimate only for non-sensitive headers; vulnerable versions performed no filtering and did not require admin rights to define such a server, so a tenant-level owner could capture credentials. This is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor). The upstream fix adds a new helper src/utils/passthroughHeaders.ts exposing isSafePassthroughHeader(), which denies a denylist of sensitive names (authorization, proxy-authorization, cookie, x-auth-token, x-api-key) and also denies the dynamically resolved bearer auth header name from system config; it is enforced in the OpenAPI client, in collectPassthroughHeaders(), and at both tool-call header injection points. The same commit hardens src/controllers/serverController.ts, src/services/templateService.ts and src/utils/serverConfigValidation.ts so that creating, updating, batch-creating or importing a server that forwards caller headers requires admin privileges, with new test coverage in tests/controllers/serverController.test.ts. The trigger details beyond header collection at tool-invocation time are not further described in the available sources.
