| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a Prometheus instance (≤3.15.1) whose remote_write is configured with Azure AD or Google IAM (OAuth2/bearer-token) authentication AND with redirects followed, which is the default. The attacker must control the configured remote-write endpoint, or be positioned to return/inject an HTTP 3xx redirect to a host of their choosing in that path - this is the AT:P attack requirement and the main limiter. It does NOT apply to remote_write setups that do not use these bearer-token credential types, nor where the endpoint and its redirect path cannot be attacker-influenced; the AC:H/AT:P metrics reflect that the attacker must already control a server in the remote-write flow rather than attacking Prometheus directly. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity information-disclosure flaw (CVSS 4.0 base 6.3) whose signals are internally consistent and point to conditional, not opportunistic, risk. The vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L) shows a network-reachable issue requiring no privileges on Prometheus and no user interaction, but with high attack complexity and a specific attack requirement (AT:P) - the attacker must control a server in the remote-write path to inject a 3xx redirect, which is the limiting factor, not a weakness in Prometheus's own exposure. There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a patchable, condition-dependent issue rather than a drop-everything emergency. A public research writeup (abraxaslabs.tech) and a VulnCheck advisory exist, so exploitation technique is documented, but the input does not confirm working weaponized exploit code. Net: a genuine credential-exposure concern for the specific population that uses remote_write with Azure AD or Google IAM authentication, but not a high-real-risk mass-exploitation scenario for the general Prometheus install base. Missing signals to note explicitly: EPSS probability is not supplied and KEV status is absent (treated as not exploited), so prioritization rests on the SSVC-style 'this_month' label plus the documented technique. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A victim runs Prometheus with remote_write configured to use Azure AD or Google IAM bearer-token authentication and follows redirects (the default). An attacker who controls the configured remote-write endpoint, or who can inject a redirect into that path, returns an HTTP 3xx response pointing to a host they control; Prometheus follows it and re-sends the bearer token to the attacker, who captures it and can replay it - for example to write metrics into the victim's monitoring backend. A public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as working exploit code, and the high complexity (AC:H/AT:P) reflects that the attacker must already control a server in the remote-write path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Prometheus through 3.15.1 can expose Azure AD or Google IAM bearer tokens when remote_write follows an HTTP 3xx redirect to a host chosen by an attacker, who can then replay the token, for example to write metrics to the victim's backend. The issue affects instances that use those bearer-token credential types for remote_write and that follow redirects, which is the default; it does not apply to remote_write setups without those credentials or where the endpoint and redirect path cannot be attacker-influenced. Severity is medium (CVSS 4.0 base 6.3; assessed CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N), with no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix; the supplied patch reference is upstream prometheus/common PR #901 (https://github.com/prometheus/common/pull/901), which strips sensitive headers on cross-host redirects. The input reports patch availability from the vendor but does not list an exact fixed Prometheus release version, so confirm the patched release in the vendor advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/prometheus-through-3.15.1-credential-leak-via-remote-write-cross-host-redirects) before upgrading. Where patching cannot be applied immediately, set remote_write to not follow redirects (follow_redirects: false), recognizing that legitimate remote-write endpoints that rely on redirects will fail; also ensure the configured remote-write endpoint is trusted and that an attacker cannot return or inject 3xx responses in that path. If a cross-host redirect may already have occurred, rotate the affected Azure AD or Google IAM credentials and review the metrics backend for unauthorized writes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Prometheus remote_write uses an HTTP client built from prometheus/common's HTTPClientConfig to send samples to a remote endpoint; that client supports Azure AD and Google IAM OAuth2/bearer-token authentication and, by default, follows HTTP redirects. In affected versions through 3.15.1, the custom header and authorization round trippers can carry the Authorization bearer token across a cross-host redirect, so a remote-write endpoint, or any server able to inject a 3xx response in that path, can redirect the request to an attacker-controlled host and capture the token. The root cause is CWE-522 (insufficiently protected credentials), and the supplied CPE cpe:2.3:a:prometheus:prometheus:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* maps to Prometheus itself; the upstream fix in prometheus/common PR #901 adds cross-host redirect detection and strips sensitive headers when redirects are followed. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) and the CVSS 4.0 AT:P metric reflect that the attacker must already control the configured remote-write endpoint or the redirect response, rather than being able to trigger the leak directly against an arbitrary Prometheus server.

Attacker must control a server in the remote-write redirect path (AC:H) but needs no Prometheus privileges or user interaction; leaked bearer token gives limited confidentiality loss (C:L) and lets the attacker write metrics to the victim backend (I:L), with no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Prometheus through 3.15.1 contains a credential leak vulnerability that allows attackers to capture Azure AD or Google IAM bearer tokens by redirecting remote_write requests to another host. Attackers controlling the remote-write endpoint or a redirecting server can return a 3xx to their host and replay the token, for example to write metrics to the victim's backend.
