| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) the attacker to hold a project-editor role in a shared n8n team project (PR:L - authenticated insider); (2) the ability to edit a colleague's workflow settings.errorWorkflow value; (3) the n8n dynamic credentials feature to be in use so that per-user secrets exist to resolve; and (4) the targeted colleague's workflow to actually fail (AT:P) so the error workflow is invoked with the inherited execution context (UI:P - the victim runs/triggers the workflow). Limiting factors: this is not remotely exploitable by unauthenticated users - it is an abuse of an already-granted editor privilege within a multi-tenant project, depends on the victim's workflow failing, and is irrelevant on single-user instances or where dynamic credentials are not used. Affected versions are n8n before 2.41.5 and 2.42.x before 2.42.2. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, consistent with its Medium severity (CVSS 4.0 base 5.1) and the vuln.today 'this_month' decision label - real enough to remediate on a normal patch cadence, not an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P) makes the practical constraints explicit: the attacker must already hold a project-editor role (PR:L, so this is an insider/authenticated abuse of privilege per CWE-266, not an anonymous internet attack), a specific attack requirement must hold (AT:P - the targeted colleague's workflow must actually fail), and passive user interaction is needed (UI:P - the victim must run or trigger the affected workflow). Impact is split: direct vulnerable-system impact is low (VC:L/VI:L) but the subsequent-system impact is high (SC:H/SI:H) because the attacker resolves another user's per-user dynamic credential secrets and inherits their identity. No CISA KEV listing is present and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread automated exploitation is not indicated; the preconditions (privileged multi-tenant project, dynamic credentials enabled, a failing victim workflow) point to targeted insider abuse rather than mass exploitation. There are no conflicting signals in the data - the network vector, authenticated privilege requirement, and credential-theft impact all line up with the description. The main missing signals are EPSS and any independent exploitation telemetry. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A project editor in a shared n8n team project changes a colleague's workflow so its settings.errorWorkflow points to an error workflow the attacker owns. When the colleague's workflow fails, n8n passes the failed run's full execution context - including the carrier binding the run to the colleague's identity - into the attacker's error workflow, letting the attacker resolve the colleague's per-user dynamic credential secrets. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; only vendor/VulnCheck advisories exist. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Per-user credential theft in n8n (npm package, versions before 2.41.5 and 2.42.x before 2.42.2) lets a project editor repoint a colleague's workflow settings.errorWorkflow at an error workflow they control, then inherit the colleague's identity when that workflow fails and resolve the colleague's per-user dynamic credential secrets. Exploitation is authenticated (CVSS 4.0 PR:L) and conditional: the attacker must already hold an editor role in a shared team project, dynamic credentials must be in use, and the victim's workflow must actually fail so the error workflow runs with the inherited execution context. Rated Medium (CVSS 4.0 base 5.1, independently assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N) and classified 'this_month' on the vuln.today priority scale; no public exploit was identified at the time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV entry.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to n8n 2.42.2 (2.42.x branch) or 2.41.5 (2.41.x branch), or any later release; both versions strip identity fields from the execution context handed to error workflows. Until upgrading, the advisory offers temporary mitigations that do not fully remediate the risk: restrict n8n instance access to fully trusted users; audit team project memberships and remove editor access from anyone not fully trusted (this directly removes the PR:L prerequisite, at the cost of reducing collaboration); review all active workflows and audit settings.errorWorkflow for unexpected values (detects existing abuse but must be repeated as workflows change); and disable the dynamic credentials feature where it is not required (eliminates the per-user secrets that the inherited context can resolve, but breaks workflows depending on it). Coordinate the upgrade with the advisory at https://github.com/n8n-io/n8n/security/advisories/GHSA-pcr3-v5vr-qppf, and after patching consider reviewing execution logs for error workflows configured by users who do not own the workflows that reference them.

Technical ContextAI · show details
n8n is a workflow automation platform in which a failed execution triggers the error workflow named in the workflow's settings.errorWorkflow field. Prior to the fix, that handoff passed the failed run's full execution context, including the internal carrier binding the execution to the user who started it. Because the identity carrier travelled with the context, the error workflow resolved credentials in the victim's per-user namespace, so an error workflow owned by an attacker could pull secrets belonging to the initiating colleague. The root cause is tracked as CWE-266 (Incorrect Privilege Assignment): an actor with workflow-editing rights in a shared project is granted, through context inheritance, an effective privilege level - the victim's credential scope - that the actor should never have held. The fix removes identity fields from what an error workflow receives, leaving only non-identity data. Affected code ships as the npm package n8n; the 2.42.x line was fixed in 2.42.2 and the maintained 2.41.x line in 2.41.5. The flaw requires the dynamic credentials feature to be enabled and per-user secrets to exist; single-user instances and deployments without dynamic credentials have no secrets to resolve through this path.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
n8n before 2.41.5 and 2.42.x before 2.42.2 passes a failed workflow's full execution context, including the identity of the user who started the run, to the configured error workflow. A project editor can set a colleague's workflow settings.errorWorkflow to an error workflow they own, inherit the colleague's identity when that workflow fails, and resolve the colleague's per-user dynamic credential secrets.
