Exploitation Conditions

Trigger requires sending a multipart/related request whose multipart boundary is empty (a body of the CRLFCRLF form, ~30 bytes) to the SBI (Service Based Interface) listener of any Open5GS network function; default configuration is sufficient and the official open5gs:2.8.0 container reproduces as-is. No authentication is needed (PR:N) because ogs_sbi_parse_request dispatches to the parser before any access-token check. The key LIMITING factor is network position: the advisory states this is NOT Internet-exposed-unauthenticated - SEPP N32 inter-operator traffic is HTTPS with a client CA - so the attacker must be able to reach the internal core SBI network plane. Impact is confined to availability (NF crash/restart); it does not yield data disclosure or code execution.

Impact

All signals converge on a credible but bounded threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity, pre-authentication trigger, matching the GHSA narrative that any unauthenticated peer on the SBI plane can crash a network function with a single ~30-byte request. Crucially, impact is isolated to availability (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H): the advisory assesses this as DoS-only - the out-of-bounds write is a fixed periodic pattern into talloc-isolated objects with glibc safe-linking in effect, and code execution is explicitly 'not demonstrated and not claimed.' This is therefore a genuine priority as an availability/resilience issue for 5G core operators, not a high-CVSS-but-trivial problem, but it is not an RCE. Mitigating the urgency: KEV status is NOT present (no confirmed active exploitation), no EPSS score was supplied (exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input), and the vendor/VulnCheck advisory scopes exposure to peers on the internal core SBI network - it is explicitly 'not Internet-exposed unauthenticated' since SEPP N32 inter-operator traffic uses HTTPS with a client CA. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a serious internal-plane DoS rather than a mass-exploitation event. Net: treat as a prompt-patch availability flaw for exposed core networks; the blast radius depends heavily on how well the SBI plane is network-segmented.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with reachability to an Open5GS network function's SBI port (e.g., a compromised host or rogue function on the core service mesh, since the SBI plane is internal rather than Internet-facing) sends a single crafted HTTP POST with Content-Type multipart/related and an empty boundary. The empty boundary is never length-checked, so the parser's lookbehind buffer index grows without bound and writes past its heap allocation, crashing the target NF with a SIGSEGV before any authentication check. The GHSA documents a reproducible PoC methodology (confirmed with ASan on the real object file), but the complete self-contained exploit is held privately and only available on request.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

Pre-authentication denial of service in Open5GS 1.3.0 through 2.8.0 lets a peer that can reach a network function's SBI listener crash that NF with a single crafted multipart/related request. Because the multipart boundary is accepted when empty, the parser's index never reaches its terminating boundary length and writes linearly past a fixed heap lookbehind buffer, producing a SIGSEGV and an NF crash/restart; the official open5gs:2.8.0 container reproduces it with roughly a 30-byte body under default configuration. Impact is availability only - no data disclosure or code execution is demonstrated - and the exposure is bounded to peers on the internal core SBI plane (SEPP N32 inter-operator traffic is HTTPS with a client CA), so this is a this_week-priority fix rather than an Internet-facing emergency; no CISA KEV listing or public working exploit code was identified, and the advisory describes reproduction steps while stating that a self-contained PoC is held privately on request.

RemediationAI

The upstream fix is commit 6820c2743b5b5e126e3755d2f92dae2b236732df, which adds a guard in parse_multipart() that logs "Empty multipart boundary", frees the boundary string and returns OGS_ERROR before the parser is initialized; because the advisory lists no tagged release containing this change, treat it as an upstream fix available via commit rather than a confirmed patched version, and either build from that commit (or later) or obtain a vendor-patched build. Track the vendor advisory at https://github.com/open5gs/open5gs/security/advisories/GHSA-25v2-v588-jq8g for the release that ships it. Until a patched build is deployed, the effective compensating control is network position, since the attacker must reach the internal core SBI plane: enforce segmentation and allowlisting so only known network functions and management hosts can reach each NF's SBI port, with the trade-off that allowlists must be maintained as NFs are added and can complicate interop or lab testing; note that SEPP N32 inter-operator traffic is already HTTPS with a client CA and is not the exposed surface. Restart-on-crash supervision (systemd/Kubernetes restart policies) limits outage duration but does not prevent the crash loop and its signaling-load side effects, so it is a stopgap rather than a fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a heap-based out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) inside the multipart parser bundled with Open5GS's SBI library at lib/sbi/contrib/multipart_parser.c (a derivative of the multipart-parser-c state machine), which is invoked from parse_multipart() in lib/sbi/message.c to split multipart/related bodies carrying SBI payloads. The parser's boundary_length is a size_t initialized from strlen(boundary), and the sink at approximately line 260 performs p->lookbehind[2 + p->index] = c under a guard that fires only when (++p->index) == p->boundary_length; with an empty boundary the length is zero, that equality is never satisfied, and index grows without bound so the write marches past the talloc-allocated lookbehind buffer. The call site validates only that the parsed content pointer is non-NULL and that content_length >= 2, and the ogs_strndup() producing the boundary is asserted non-NULL but never length-checked, so a CRLFCRLF-form body yields a zero-length boundary. Requests reach ogs_sbi_parse_request before any access-token validation, which is why the defect is pre-authentication. A related but distinct pre-auth abort in the same parser (ogs_assert at message.c:3241, open issue #4775) is separate from this out-of-bounds write. The advisory notes the overwrite is a fixed periodic pattern into talloc-isolated objects with glibc safe-linking in play, and no code-execution path is claimed.

DescriptionCVE.org

Open5GS 1.3.0 through 2.8.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in parse_multipart() that allows unauthenticated attackers to corrupt memory by supplying an empty multipart boundary. Attackers can send a single crafted multipart/related request to the SBI interface of any network function, overflowing the lookbehind buffer and crashing it.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Open5GS, a widely used open-source 5G core, contains a high-severity pre-authentication denial-of-service flaw that allows an attacker with access to the internal SBI network to crash any network function with a single crafted request. This could cause repeated outages of core services, disrupting subscriber connectivity and service availability. Leadership should prioritize remediation this week to maintain network stability, though the risk is contained to the internal core plane.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
