Exploitation Conditions

Requires the target to be an NXP MCU-based device running the mcuxsdk-middleware-usb RNDIS CDC device class (USB_DeviceCdcRndisSetCommand path) at a version before 2.13.0, and the attacker must have physical USB connectivity acting as a malicious USB host. The concrete trigger, per the source diff, is an RNDIS SET message for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER or OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST whose host-supplied informationBufferOffset exceeds (RNDIS_MAX_EXPECTED_COMMAND_SIZE - RNDIS_SET_MSG_DATA_OFFSET - field size); the unpatched code validated only informationBufferLength and not the offset. Limiting factors: physical USB access is mandatory (no network/remote path), the device must expose the RNDIS function to an untrusted host, and impact is limited to reading/disclosing device memory with no write or code-execution capability.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, physically-gated information-disclosure flaw, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:P/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N, 5.1) shows the dominant limiting factor clearly: AV:P means an attacker must have physical USB connectivity to the target as a malicious host, which sharply constrains real-world exploitability despite requiring no privileges (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N). Impact is confined to confidentiality (VC:H; VI:N/VA:N) - out-of-bounds reads that leak device memory, with no code execution or integrity/availability effect. No CISA KEV entry is present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no EPSS score was supplied, so statistical exploitation probability cannot be weighed here. vuln.today assigns a 'this_month' priority (not act_now/emergency), which aligns with the picture: a patch exists, impact is read-only, and the physical attack vector makes mass or remote exploitation impractical. Net: a legitimate issue to schedule and patch, not a high-CVSS-but-overstated emergency - exposure is realistic mainly for devices an attacker can physically reach or that expose USB to untrusted hosts. EPSS data is missing and should be checked if available.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with physical access connects a malicious USB host (or a host they control) to an embedded device running the vulnerable NXP RNDIS device class, then sends an RNDIS SET message for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER or OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST carrying an informationBufferOffset that points outside the command buffer. The firmware trusts the offset and reads out-of-bounds memory, returning adjacent device memory contents to the attacker's host. Given AV:P/AC:L, the attack is low-complexity once physical USB access is achieved; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

Out-of-bounds read in NXP's MCUXpresso SDK USB middleware (mcuxsdk-middleware-usb) before 2.13.0 allows a malicious USB host to disclose device memory by sending RNDIS SET messages for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER or OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST with an out-of-range informationBufferOffset. The CDC RNDIS device-class handler USB_DeviceCdcRndisSetCommand() validated informationBufferLength but trusted the host-supplied offset, so the read can run beyond the fixed command buffer. Exploitation requires physical USB access to an affected MCU that exposes the RNDIS function to an untrusted host; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 2.13.0. Upgrade mcuxsdk-middleware-usb to 2.13.0 or later, which contains commit 209dd79f22755de93751d6f237d3bae5511046cf and adds the informationBufferOffset bounds checks (using RNDIS_SET_MSG_DATA_OFFSET) for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER and OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST in USB_DeviceCdcRndisSetCommand(); confirm the fixed code is present by checking device/class/usb_device_cdc_rndis.c and usb_device_cdc_rndis.h in your tree, and see the release highlights at https://mcuxpresso.nxp.com/mcuxsdk/latest/release/index.html#release-highlights plus the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/nxp-mcuxpresso-sdk-usb-middleware-before-2.13.0-rndis-out-of-bounds-read. If the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, the practical compensating control is to remove the attack path: do not expose the RNDIS CDC function to untrusted USB hosts, either by omitting/disable the RNDIS device class in affected firmware builds or by limiting physical USB port access to trusted hosts. The trade-off is that RNDIS-based USB networking is lost or restricted until the middleware is updated; no other vendor-documented workaround is provided in the available references.

Technical ContextAI · show details

RNDIS (Remote NDIS) is a Microsoft protocol that carries Ethernet-style networking over USB CDC, with the USB device (typically an NXP MCU) responding to host-issued control requests. An RNDIS SET message carries an OID plus a length and an informationBufferOffset that, per the protocol, is relative to the RequestID field (a fixed 8-byte header) inside the received command buffer. The flawed handler used the host-supplied informationBufferOffset without validating it against the size of the RNDIS_MAX_EXPECTED_COMMAND_SIZE-byte s_rndisCommand buffer, which is CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read): a crafted offset lets the device read past the intended field and return adjacent device memory in the RNDIS response. The fix commit 209dd79 adds a new RNDIS_SET_MSG_DATA_OFFSET (8U) constant to account for the RequestID header and bounds-checks the offset against (RNDIS_MAX_EXPECTED_COMMAND_SIZE - RNDIS_SET_MSG_DATA_OFFSET - sizeof(uint32_t)) for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER and - sizeof(uint64_t) for OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST. The same commit also adds length validation in the host-side CDC ACM/ECM descriptor parsers and drops a descriptor-type condition in USB_HostHelperParseAlternateSetting, but the CVE-specific defect is the missing offset validation in USB_DeviceCdcRndisSetCommand(). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:nxp:mcuxsdk-middleware-usb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all versions before 2.13.0. Per the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:P/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), the attacker must have physical USB connectivity (AV:P), needs no privileges (PR:N), and impact is confidentiality-only with no write or code-execution capability.

DescriptionCVE.org

NXP MCUXpresso SDK USB middleware (mcuxsdk-middleware-usb) before 2.13.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in USB_DeviceCdcRndisSetCommand() that trusts a host-supplied informationBufferOffset. A malicious USB host can send RNDIS SET messages for OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER or OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST with an out-of-range offset to read and disclose device memory.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
