MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires all of: a local destination backend; the sync invoked with --links/-l (or --local-links) AND --metadata together; the default local encoding (no custom/Raw encoding needed, unlike the parent advisory); and an attacker able to create a directory named '...rclonelink' at the top of the source tree being copied (a shared upload or web root, another local user's area under /home or /srv, an untrusted archive/USB/network mount, or a malicious remote). Limiting factors defenders should weigh: the operator must actively run the sync with that exact flag combination (user interaction); the escape is metadata-only - content writes remain blocked by the os.Root hardening (GHSA-cf44-9pgv-m4xc); the escape depth is exactly one directory level ('<root>/..'); ownership change occurs only when rclone runs as root, while a non-root run is limited to rewriting timestamps and extended attributes outside the destination; and the mode/lchmod sink is unreachable on Linux (applies only where haveLChmod is true). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional, moderate-priority issue rather than a drop-everything emergency. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (7.0) carries AC:H, AT:P and UI:P, signalling that exploitation is gated by a specific flag combination and operator action rather than a clean drive-by. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry are present in the input, so there is no evidence of mass or active exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), which fits a serious flaw that is not yet weaponised at scale. The GHSA advisory from the reporter (VulnCheck) contains a detailed, measured reproduction, so a public PoC reference exists even though it is not packaged as a standalone working exploit. One signal to treat with care: the CVSS vector is AV:N (PR:N, unauthenticated), yet the primary described attack is planting a directory in a locally-synced source tree, which in practice requires local write access to that source (shared upload area, another local user's path, untrusted mount) - the network vector realistically applies only when the synced source is a malicious remote. Net: real impact (ownership/metadata control over the destination's parent, a privilege-escalation primitive when rclone runs as root), but narrow preconditions and no confirmed in-the-wild use point to targeted rather than widespread risk - patch promptly this week, prioritising root-run backup/sync jobs. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a root-run backup job, an attacker who can write into the tree being synced (e.g. a home directory under /home, a multi-tenant upload area, or an untrusted archive/USB/network mount) creates a directory named '...rclonelink' at the top of that tree. When the operator runs 'rclone sync ... --links --metadata' as root, the '.rclonelink' suffix is trimmed after the containment check, so the path resolves to the parent of the destination root and rclone applies attacker-controlled ownership and timestamps to it, yielding rename/replace control over the destination tree. The GHSA advisory includes a measured proof-of-concept reproduction (as uid 0, go1.26.5). |

Path traversal in rclone's local backend (versions through 1.75.1) allows an attacker who can plant a directory named '...rclonelink' inside a source tree to redirect directory metadata operations one level above the destination the operator selected. The flaw only triggers when a sync targets a local destination with both --links/-l and --metadata enabled, and it is metadata-only: content writes remain blocked by the earlier os.Root hardening, and ownership changes require rclone to run as root, while non-root runs are limited to rewriting timestamps and extended attributes of the destination's parent directory. Exploitation status at time of analysis: no public exploit code confirmed by intelligence sources, although the upstream advisory documents a working reproduction; the vendor has released rclone 1.75.2 as the fix, and priority is routine (patch within the current cycle).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade rclone to 1.75.2, which is the first version containing the fix; the vendor's recommended approach is to strip the '.rclonelink' suffix from the remote name before calling localPath() (validating the final path), and to honour the suffix only when it is the trailing component of the resolved name so that '...rclonelink' cannot collapse into '..', applying the same change to newDirectory. Where upgrading immediately is not possible, the verified compensating controls are: (1) avoid combining --links/-l with --metadata on any source tree that untrusted parties can write to - the upstream reproduction confirms the destination's parent is left untouched when -l is used without --metadata, at the cost of losing timestamp, ownership and xattr preservation on that transfer; (2) run rclone as a non-root account, which removes the ownership-change primitive entirely and limits any escape to rewriting timestamps and extended attributes outside the destination, at the cost of not being able to restore root-owned file metadata; and (3) ensure source trees (shared upload or web roots, other users' areas under /home or /srv, untrusted archives, USB or network mounts, and remote sources) do not permit an attacker to create a directory named '...rclonelink' at the top of the copied tree. Note that the mode/lchmod side of the escape is unreachable on Linux and only applies on platforms where haveLChmod is true. Technical ContextAI · show details
Rclone's local backend stores symlinks as sidecar files carrying the '.rclonelink' suffix (fs.LinkSuffix). The fix for the earlier local-encoding traversal (GHSA-7p4m-qxvv-g567 / CVE-2026-71313, commit 6a69713, shipped in v1.75.0) centralised path confinement in Fs.localPath(), which validates that the resolved OS path stays underneath f.root via filepath.Rel. The bug is a validate-then-mutate error: newObject() calls localPath(remote) and then, when TranslateSymlinks is on, passes the validated OS path into translateLink(), which performs strings.TrimSuffix(localPath, ".rclonelink") on the entire path. A remote name of '...rclonelink' passes localPath cleanly (filepath.Rel yields '...rclonelink', no '..' prefix) and is then trimmed to the two leading dots, so Object.path becomes '<root>/..' - the parent of the very root the guard protects. The same split exists in MkdirMetadata/newDirectory. Because TrimSuffix removes a fixed 11-character suffix exactly once, the escape depth is exactly one directory level. The escaped path is then handed raw to the metadata sinks: setTimes -> lChtimes, os.Lchown, and xattr.LSet. This is CWE-22 (path traversal) with CWE-59 (link following) characteristics. Content writes are still contained by the separate os.Root hardening (GHSA-cf44-9pgv-m4xc); the code is byte-identical in v1.75.0 and master HEAD 4479a3b (v1.75.0-170), confirming the residual survives the parent fix rather than reverting it. The Go module is go/github.com/rclone/rclone.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Rclone before 1.75.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the local backend's translateLink function, which trims the .rclonelink suffix from a path after the containment check, so a name can resolve outside the destination root. Attackers can plant a directory named ...rclonelink in a source tree synced with --links and --metadata to change ownership, timestamps, and xattrs of the destination's parent directory.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-22 (path traversal; the advisory also tags CWE-59), with the specific shape being validate-then-mutate.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-116195 is a path traversal flaw in rclone's local backend that could allow an attacker who can plant a directory named '...rclonelink' in a source tree to redirect metadata operations one level above the intended destination. The vulnerability only triggers under specific conditions: syncing to a local destination with both --links and --metadata enabled, and it is limited to metadata changes (timestamps and extended attributes) unless rclone runs as root. While the immediate organizational impact is low for most configurations, any team using these flags in automated sync workflows should prioritize patching to prevent subtle integrity issues in parent directories, especially in privileged contexts.
