| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded issue, best characterized as a moderate-priority information-disclosure flaw rather than a critical break. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated vector with no user interaction, which is why it scores 6.9; crucially, impact is limited to low confidentiality (VC:L) with no integrity or availability effect (VI:N/VA:N), matching the advisory's statement that only metadata - existence and type of a path - leaks, never file contents, listings or writes. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a real-but-not-urgent prioritization. No EPSS score and no KEV listing were provided, and the flaw is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; however, a detailed, reporter-verified proof-of-concept is published in the GHSA advisory, so exploitability is proven even if in-the-wild use is not. The signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting: easy to trigger, but the ceiling on damage (an existence/type oracle for enumeration) keeps real-world risk moderate and contingent on exposing serve webdav to untrusted networks. |

Rclone's serve webdav command from 1.64.0 through 1.75.1 grants unauthenticated namespace enumeration because both HTTP auth middlewares in lib/http short-circuit every OPTIONS request, not just genuine CORS preflights. A remote attacker with no credentials and no user interaction can send OPTIONS to any path and read the returned Allow header, whose value differs for an existing file, an existing collection and a missing path, revealing the existence and type of arbitrarily named files and directories. The exposure is metadata-only - no file contents, listings or writes are reachable - and the flaw does not affect serve http, serve restic or rcd; a vendor patch is available in 1.75.2 and the advisory includes public proof-of-concept reproduction steps verified by the reporter, while no confirmed active exploitation has been recorded (not in CISA KEV).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 1.75.2, which limits the OPTIONS auth exemption to genuine CORS preflights; upgrade any rclone serve webdav deployment running 1.64.0 through 1.75.1 to 1.75.2 or later (Go consumers should bump go/github.com/rclone/rclone to >= 1.75.2). Details are in GHSA-gj73-fh6v-92fj and the VulnCheck advisory listed in the references. Where an upgrade cannot be applied immediately, the practical compensating control is to stop OPTIONS requests from reaching the rclone listener unauthenticated - terminate authentication at a reverse proxy that requires credentials on OPTIONS before forwarding, or restrict network access to the WebDAV endpoint to trusted clients - accepting the side effect that a proxy enforcing credentials on OPTIONS will break legitimate browser CORS preflights against the service, and that network restriction removes remote access to the endpoint entirely. Because the oracle exposes only path existence and file-versus-collection type, deployments whose served directory names are not themselves sensitive face lower urgency, but the gap is closed completely only by moving to 1.75.2.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is a missing-authentication-for-critical-function defect in rclone's shared HTTP auth layer. lib/http/middleware.go contains an early return in both basicAuth() (around line 60) and MiddlewareAuthCustom() (around line 128) that forwards any request with method OPTIONS directly to the next handler, under the assumption that it is a CORS preflight. Neither function verifies the headers that actually identify a preflight (Origin plus Access-Control-Request-Method), so the exemption applies unconditionally to every OPTIONS request from any client, bypassing --user/--pass, --htpasswd and --auth-proxy. The short-circuit was introduced in v1.64.0 (commit 88c72d1f4), which moved the OPTIONS check out of the CORS middleware into both auth middlewares; tags v1.63.0 and v1.63.1 contain zero occurrences of the pattern, while v1.64.0 through v1.75.0 contain two. In cmd/serve/webdav/webdav.go the chi router registers the WebDAV handler for /* across every method, including OPTIONS, so WebDAV.ServeHTTP passes the request straight to golang.org/x/net/webdav, whose handleOptions stats the named path and selects the Allow value from the result. The advisory classifies the issue as CWE-306 (missing authentication for a critical function) producing CWE-200 information exposure through a CWE-204 observable response discrepancy; the CVE record itself carries CWE-200. Only serve webdav routes OPTIONS to a path-stating handler - serve http registers only GET/HEAD and returns an identical 405 for all probes, serve restic registers only GET/POST/HEAD/DELETE, rcd's handleOptions returns an empty 200, and chi answers 405 for OPTIONS on the pprof handlers mounted by fs/rc/rcserver - which is why the impact is confined to that one server mode.

Remote unauthenticated OPTIONS request needs no privileges or interaction (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N); only a low metadata/existence oracle leaks, so C:L with I:N and A:N.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Rclone from 1.64.0 before 1.75.2 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in serve webdav that lets unauthenticated attackers skip authentication by sending OPTIONS requests. Attackers can probe arbitrary paths and compare Allow header values to determine whether files or collections exist, enabling namespace enumeration.
