Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following: (1) the Grav site must be protected by HTTP Basic authentication so that the PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW values exist in the request Uri object - without Basic auth there are no credentials to capture; (2) the attacker must already hold a page-author account with permission to write raw Twig/HTML page content (PR:L); and (3) a victim holding valid credentials, typically an administrator, must actively view the attacker-authored page (UI:P), at which point their browser issues the outbound background-image request carrying the credentials to an external host. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: it is not remotely exploitable by an anonymous user, it fails against deployments that do not use HTTP Basic auth, it depends on a privileged victim choosing to render the malicious page, and it affects only Grav versions 2.0.0 through 2.2.4 (fixed in 2.2.5).

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, precondition-heavy information disclosure flaw rather than a drop-everything priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.9 (Medium) and tells a consistent story: network-reachable but requiring an authenticated low-privilege page-author account (PR:L) and passive victim interaction (UI:P), with high confidentiality impact and no integrity/availability impact - matching the CWE-200 credential-disclosure nature. No EPSS score was supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit was referenced, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic threat model is essentially an insider or a compromised/malicious contributor account: the attacker must already be a trusted page author, the deployment must actually use HTTP Basic authentication (so PHP_AUTH_USER/PHP_AUTH_PW are populated), and a credential-bearing administrator must view the malicious page. These stacked conditions, combined with the absence of KEV/POC/EPSS signals, argue for prioritized patching but not emergency response. One caveat to verify with the vendor: the disclosure crosses user authority (one author's content harvests another user's credentials), which arguably warrants a scope change in CVSS 3.1 terms even though the 4.0 subsequent-system metrics were set to N.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged page author on a Grav site that is fronted by HTTP Basic authentication creates a page whose Twig content prints the request Uri object inside an inline CSS background-image URL pointing to an attacker-controlled host. When an administrator (whose browser holds valid Basic credentials) views that page, the embedded PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW values are rendered into an outbound image request and exfiltrated to the attacker. No public exploit code was referenced, so exploitation would currently require an attacker to craft the Twig payload themselves.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026

Grav CMS 2.0.0 through 2.2.4 lets page authors harvest visitors' HTTP Basic authentication credentials - including administrator usernames and passwords - by rendering the request Uri object, which embeds PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW, into page content such as an inline style background image that beacons the captured values to an external host. Exploitation is precondition-heavy: the site must actually be protected by HTTP Basic auth so those PHP variables are populated, the attacker must already hold a page-author account permitted to write raw Twig/HTML page content (PR:L), and a credential-bearing victim such as an administrator must actively view the authored page (UI:P) before their browser issues the outbound request. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor addressed the flaw in Grav 2.2.5; the assessed severity is moderate (CVSS 4.0: 6.9; CVSS 3.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) rather than an unauthenticated remote compromise.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade Grav to 2.2.5 or later, which removes the credential exposure from the request Uri rendering path - see advisory GHSA-c85g-q5w4-ff68 and the VulnCheck advisory for confirmation of the fixed version. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to stop relying on HTTP Basic authentication for privileged accounts (migrate to session- or token-based auth, or place the site behind an SSO/identity-aware proxy that does not populate PHP_AUTH_USER/PHP_AUTH_PW); the trade-off is re-architecture of the authentication layer and possible breakage of existing integrations that assume Basic auth. Second, restrict the page-author role to trusted users and, if the site does not require it, disable raw Twig/HTML processing in page content so authors cannot print the Uri object at all - this can break legitimate themes or content that depend on inline Twig. Third, deploy a Content-Security-Policy that limits img-src and style-src to first-party or explicitly allowlisted origins so that background-image beacons to arbitrary external hosts are blocked by the victim's browser; this may suppress legitimate third-party images and embedded assets and must be tested in report-only mode first. Finally, rotate any administrator credentials that may have been exposed, review Grav page revisions for suspicious inline style background-image constructs referencing external domains, and monitor egress logs for outbound requests carrying credentials in the URL path or query string.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Grav is a flat-file PHP content management system whose pages are rendered through the Twig templating engine, and its request Uri abstraction aggregates request metadata - including the PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW server values that PHP populates only when the site is fronted by HTTP Basic authentication. Because the Uri object surfaces those credential values, any author able to place raw Twig or HTML into page content can print the object into markup and have the resulting string substituted into a URL, for example a CSS inline-style background-image. The victim's browser then resolves that URL, performing an outbound GET to an attacker-controlled host with the Basic-auth username and password embedded in the request, which is a CWE-200 exposure of sensitive information to an unauthorized actor. The information leak crosses a trust boundary - the credentials belong to the visiting administrator, not to the vulnerable component - which is why the independent assessment scores the CVSS 3.1 vector with S:C alongside C:H while integrity and availability remain unaffected (I:N/A:N) and user interaction is required (UI:R). The changelog boundary is precise: all Grav releases from 2.0.0 up to but excluding 2.2.5 are in scope per the getgrav:grav CPE.

DescriptionCVE.org

Grav from 2.0.0 before 2.2.5 contains an information disclosure vulnerability that allows page authors to capture visitors' HTTP Basic credentials through Twig page content. Authors can print the request Uri object, which embeds PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW, inside an inline style background image to exfiltrate administrators' credentials to an external host.
