Vulnerability Assessment
| Weakness |
CWE
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated administrator session (PR:H) because the nextRestore and nextBackup actions live in the admin backup controller (admin/index.php?module=tools/backup). No non-default configuration is needed - the flaw is present in default installations of Vvveb 1.0.8.6 and prior, since these two functions never call sanitizeFileName() on the file GET parameter. Exploitation is limited by that administrator-authentication requirement; the sibling functions restore(), delete(), and download() are not affected because they do sanitize input. The write primitive (nextBackup) is further constrained to paths where the web server process has write permission and appends a fixed '.sql' suffix to the attacker-chosen path. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but access-gated issue, not a drive-by threat. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N, base 8.7) is driven high by the scope change and dual high confidentiality/integrity impact, but PR:H is the decisive limiter: exploitation requires an already-authenticated administrator. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (prioritize, but not act_now/emergency). No CISA KEV listing is present in the input and no EPSS probability was supplied, so widespread automated exploitation cannot be asserted - both signals are simply absent rather than low. The vendor GHSA advisory includes PoC curl commands, confirming the mechanism (unsanitized file GET parameter concatenated to DIR_BACKUP), though the demonstrated output shows stat/fopen 'No such file or directory' warnings rather than a successful file read. Net: a real post-authentication path-traversal flaw in a niche CMS; priority is moderate and bounded by the admin-privilege prerequisite, consistent with the 'this_week' label rather than emergency patching. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Vvveb administrator (or an attacker who has hijacked an admin session) sends a crafted GET request to the backup controller's nextRestore or nextBackup action with a file parameter containing '../' sequences. Via nextRestore they cause the server to open and SQL-process arbitrary server-readable files; via nextBackup they append SQL dump content (potentially user credentials and session data) to arbitrary writable paths with a .sql suffix. A public PoC reference exists in the vendor advisory; it is not verified as a fully working read primitive, since the demonstration output shows file-not-found warnings. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Path traversal in the Vvveb CMS backup controller lets an administrator-supplied 'file' GET parameter be concatenated onto the backup directory path without sanitization in the nextRestore() and nextBackup() actions, allowing arbitrary server-side file reads (and SQL execution of the read content) and arbitrary-path writes of database dump data with a forced .sql suffix. All installations of Vvveb 1.0.8.6 and prior are affected by default; exploitation requires a valid authenticated administrator session (CVSS PR:H), so this is an access-gated issue rather than a drive-by threat. A public PoC reference exists in the GitHub advisory (curl requests against nextRestore); it is not verified as working exploit code, and no active exploitation has been confirmed (not in CISA KEV). Vendor-released fix: commit aa29cb0, shipped in version 1.0.8.7.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Vvveb 1.0.8.7 or later, which contains upstream fix commit aa29cb013e5037d75f6780741bac6b69b9d403a2 (https://github.com/givanz/Vvveb/commit/aa29cb013e5037d75f6780741bac6b69b9d403a2); the commit adds sanitizeFileName() to nextBackup(), relocates backup files into a dedicated db subdirectory of DIR_BACKUP behind the new $this->dirBackup property, casts the page and position parameters to integers and validates the table name against an allow-list. Details are in advisory GHSA-75qx-795q-v79g (https://github.com/givanz/Vvveb/security/advisories/GHSA-75qx-795q-v79g). Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, note that the flaw is only reachable through the admin backup controller, so tightening who holds administrator accounts and restricting network access to admin/index.php?module=tools/backup materially reduces exposure - at the cost of operational flexibility for legitimate backup and restore work - but this does not remove the underlying defect and the vendor's fix remains the complete remediation. Also review the server for stray .sql files written outside the backup directory and audit database contents for tampering, since the write and SQL-execution primitives may already have been used.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Vvveb is a PHP-based CMS with a page builder, and its admin backup tool (admin/controller/tools/backup.php) implements chunked database dump and restore operations driven by successive AJAX requests. Two of those actions, nextRestore() and nextBackup(), take the caller-controlled 'file' parameter from the GET request and concatenate it directly onto DIR_BACKUP, the storage/backup directory constant, without passing it through the framework's sanitizeFileName() helper. This is the CWE-26 path traversal class: a '../'-laden value resolves outside the intended backup directory. nextRestore() opens the resolved path with fopen() and feeds its lines to the database as SQL statements, so a traversal target is parsed as a dump; while the file content is not returned directly to the browser, SQL errors may leak fragments and a previously planted SQL-formatted file can be executed against the database. nextBackup() opens the resolved path in append mode with a fixed '.sql' suffix and writes table dump output, which includes database content such as user credentials and session data, to any location writable by the web server process. Sibling actions restore(), delete() and download() correctly invoke sanitizeFileName() first, which is what makes the omission in these two functions anomalous. The upstream fix commit aa29cb0 introduces a dedicated $this->dirBackup (DIR_BACKUP . DS . 'db' . DS) property, applies sanitizeFileName() in nextBackup(), adds integer casting for the page/position parameters and a table allow-list check; the affected range is everything at or below 1.0.8.6, per the vendor package metadata.

DescriptionCVE.org
Vvveb is a powerful and easy to use CMS with page builder to build websites, blogs or ecommerce stores. In versions 1.0.8.6 and prior, the nextRestore() and nextBackup() functions in the backup controller accept a file GET parameter and concatenate it directly to DIR_BACKUP without calling sanitizeFileName(). This allows an authenticated administrator to read arbitrary files on the server (via nextRestore) and write SQL dump content to arbitrary locations (via nextBackup). This is inconsistent with the sibling functions restore(), delete(), and download() which all correctly call sanitizeFileName() first. This issue has been patched via commit aa29cb0.

Executive ViewAI
A high-severity path traversal vulnerability in Vvveb CMS version 1.0.8.6 and earlier allows any authenticated administrator to read arbitrary files on the server and write database dumps to arbitrary locations. While exploitation requires valid admin credentials, this still poses a significant risk: a compromised admin account, malicious insider, or credential-stuffing attack could lead to unauthorized data access, data tampering, and potential SQL execution. Leadership should prioritize patching because administrative access is often the easiest vector for attackers, and the lack of a vendor patch as of now means the organization may remain exposed until the fix is applied.
Apply vendor patch.
