| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the Remote Control Server feature to be enabled on the bandcamp-player desktop app and the attacker to be able to reach that server over the network - per vendor documentation this is a local-network (LAN) companion-app feature, not a public internet service. The flaw lies in authentication handling tied to the remoteEnabled argument in database.ts, affecting the legacy non-secure connection mode (plain HTTP/WS without device pairing or approval). Limiting factors: the remote control feature must be turned on; exploitation is practically constrained to the trusted LAN; and the fix (v1.8.34-beta) ships Secure Mode (HTTPS/WSS with pairing and desktop approval) enabled by default, so patched/default deployments are not exposed. No user interaction on the victim side and no authentication are required against a vulnerable, enabled server. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 4.0 base 6.9) missing-authentication flaw (CWE-306) in the Remote Control Server of eremef bandcamp-player, reported solely by VulDB. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) indicates a low-complexity, unauthenticated attack with only partial (Low) impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Exploitation maturity is E:X (undefined); there is no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS value supplied, and no public exploit identified, so this reflects a disclosed-and-patched issue rather than an actively exploited one. A key tension: the vector and description claim network/remote reach (AV:N, 'launched remotely'), but the vendor's own README and REMOTE_SPEC describe the remote control server as a LAN-scoped feature for pairing a phone to the desktop - 'other devices on your local network may read traffic or control playback' - which implies adjacent-network (LAN) rather than true internet-remote exposure. Net real-world priority is LOW-to-MEDIUM: partial impact, likely LAN-bound, obscure product, no exploitation evidence. Treat it as a routine upgrade rather than an emergency, while verifying actual network exposure of the remote control port. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user runs the bandcamp-player desktop app with Remote Control enabled in legacy (non-secure) mode. An attacker on the same local network sends requests to the remote control server and, because the remoteEnabled handling lacks an authentication/pairing check, gains unauthenticated control of playback and read access to player state without approval on the desktop. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Missing authentication in the Remote Control Server component of eremef bandcamp-player through 1.8.33-beta allows unauthenticated attackers with LAN reachability to control the desktop player's remote interface without a device pairing or approval step. The flaw is rooted in how the remoteEnabled setting is handled in database.ts, and it is practically exposed only when the Remote Control feature is switched on and the legacy, non-secure connection mode (plain HTTP/WS, no pairing) is in use; no victim interaction is required against such a server. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been confirmed, and the vendor has released a patched version, 1.8.34-beta, which turns Secure Mode (HTTPS/WSS with QR pairing and desktop approval) on by default.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to eremef bandcamp-player 1.8.34-beta or later - the vendor-released patch corresponding to commit ccba99b66bc61acf46e4a332034799d7452ddea6 (PR https://github.com/eremef/bandcamp-player/pull/119, release https://github.com/eremef/bandcamp-player/releases/tag/v1.8.34-beta) - which resolves the missing-authentication path and ships Secure Mode (HTTPS/WSS, QR pairing, desktop approval) enabled by default on both desktop and mobile, so patched installs are not reachable over the legacy unencrypted channel unless an operator explicitly disables it. If upgrading is not immediately possible, turn off Remote Control in desktop Settings → Remote Control (this fully removes the attack surface but disables mobile and web remote control), or, if remote control must remain in use, keep Secure Mode on for both desktop and mobile and never enable the legacy plain HTTP/WS mode; note that the legacy mode is required for some older clients, so disabling it may break those setups. As a network-level compensating control, restrict the remote-control port to specific trusted hosts with a host firewall or isolate the LAN/VLAN; this limits exposure but does not fix the underlying authentication gap and can interfere with legitimate companion-device discovery. Do not expose the remote-control port to the internet or to untrusted networks, since there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis but the missing authentication makes any reachable instance trivially abusable.

Technical ContextAI · show details
eremef bandcamp-player is an Electron desktop application for playing Bandcamp music that optionally exposes a Remote Control Server so that a companion React Native mobile app or browser-based web remote on the same LAN can drive playback. The vulnerability is CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function): the setting governing remote access, remoteEnabled in database.ts, is manipulated in a way that exposes the remote interface without an authentication or pairing check. Per vendor documentation, the vulnerable path is the legacy remote protocol - plain HTTP/WS served at http://<lan-ip>:<port> or ws://<lan-ip>:<port> with no encryption, no device pairing and no desktop-side approval - whereas the newer Safe mode uses HTTPS/WSS with a one-time code, certificate-fingerprint verification and explicit approval on the desktop (documented in docs/REMOTE_SPEC.md). The upstream fix does not merely validate a flag; it changes the default posture so Secure Mode is enabled on both desktop and mobile and the app will not silently fall back to the unencrypted connection. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:eremef:bandcamp-player:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected package as any release in the vulnerable range, and per the independent assessment the realistic attack surface is the local network (CVSS:3.1 AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L) rather than the public internet, since the server is a LAN companion-app feature and not intended for external exposure.

CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N
Remote control server is LAN-scoped per vendor docs so AV:A; missing authentication/pairing gives PR:N/UI:N; attacker gains only partial playback control and state read, yielding Low C/I/A.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in eremef bandcamp-player up to 1.8.33-beta. The impacted element is an unknown function of the file database.ts of the component Remote Control Server. Executing a manipulation of the argument remoteEnabled can lead to missing authentication. The attack may be launched remotely. Upgrading to version 1.8.34-beta is sufficient to resolve this issue. This patch is called ccba99b66bc61acf46e4a332034799d7452ddea6. Upgrading the affected component is advised.
