Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following: the attacker must own or control a domain whose name is a string prefix of a legitimate Coder workspace-proxy access URL (the specific flaw in the SIMILAR TO pattern in GetWorkspaceProxyByHostname); a workspace-proxy must be configured in the target deployment so that a proxy access URL exists to be prefix-matched; and an already-authenticated Coder victim must click a crafted /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect link (UI:P). These limit exploitation to targeted scenarios: it fails against deployments with no workspace proxy, against unauthenticated or non-interacting users, and where the attacker cannot acquire a suitably prefix-shaped domain. Affected versions are Coder before 2.29.20, 2.33.0-2.33.11, 2.34.0-2.34.7, and 2.35.0-2.35.3.

Impact

This is a credible, above-average priority for any organization running Coder, but not an emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P, score 8.7) is driven high by HIGH confidentiality and integrity impact plus a scope change (SC:H/SI:H) reflecting that a stolen application_connect key grants access to the victim's workspace apps. Several signals temper the raw score: attack complexity is High (AC:H) with an attack requirement (AT:P) - the attacker must already own a domain that is a string prefix of a legitimate workspace-proxy access URL - and successful exploitation requires luring an already-authenticated victim into clicking a crafted link (PR:L + UI:P). No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no public proof-of-concept is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The combination of required victim interaction, the need to control a specifically-shaped domain, and authenticated-victim preconditions makes this far better suited to targeted phishing of a known Coder deployment than to opportunistic mass exploitation - consistent with the High CVSS being a per-victim severity measure rather than a widespread-exploitation predictor.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who registers or controls a domain that is a string prefix of an organization's Coder workspace-proxy access URL sends a targeted phishing message to an authenticated Coder user containing a crafted /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect link. When the victim clicks, the flawed SIMILAR TO prefix match in GetWorkspaceProxyByHostname trusts the attacker domain as a legitimate proxy and the victim's browser forwards the application_connect API key to the attacker, who replays it to access the victim's workspace applications. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and the attack depends on victim interaction (UI:P) and attacker control of a suitably-named domain (AC:H).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026

Credential theft in Coder (before 2.29.20, 2.33.0 through 2.33.11, 2.34.0 through 2.34.7, and 2.35.0 through 2.35.3) lets a remote attacker who controls a hostname that is a string prefix of a configured workspace-proxy access URL have that hostname accepted as a trusted proxy by GetWorkspaceProxyByHostname. The attacker then lures an already-authenticated user to a crafted /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect link, captures the redirected application_connect API key, and replays it to reach the victim's workspace applications (CWE-522). Exploitation is constrained by the need for a configured workspace proxy, a suitably prefix-shaped attacker domain, and victim interaction, so it is a targeted rather than opportunistic attack; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the fixed release for your train: 2.29.20, 2.33.12, 2.34.8, or 2.35.4 (patched versions per the GHSA-h58h-qvv5-xvwg vendor advisory, mirrored in the VulnCheck advisory). If upgrading immediately is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to remove or disable workspace proxies that are not actively in use, since the flaw only reaches deployments where a proxy access URL exists to be prefix-matched - the trade-off is loss of proxied workspace app access for those users. Second, enforce exact-match host routing at the ingress or reverse proxy in front of Coder so that only the literal configured proxy hostnames are forwarded to the Coder service and any hostname that merely shares a leading string with them is rejected with a 404/421 rather than passed through; this depends on an inventory of every legitimate proxy hostname and will break access through any hostname you fail to list. Third, treat application_connect API keys as potentially exposed on affected versions and rotate or invalidate active keys and user sessions after patching, accepting the disruption of forcing re-authentication. Blocking /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect outright is not recommended as a standing mitigation because it breaks workspace application authentication flows, but temporarily restricting it to known source networks during an upgrade window is a reasonable stopgap; also monitor proxy and ingress logs for auth-redirect requests whose Referer or redirect target is a domain sharing a prefix with a legitimate proxy URL.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Coder is a self-hosted platform for provisioning developer workspaces, and deployments can expose workspaces through workspace proxies that have their own access URLs (for example an app-style hostname). The vulnerable code path, GetWorkspaceProxyByHostname, resolves an incoming request's hostname to a configured workspace proxy by matching it against a pattern in the database using PostgreSQL's SIMILAR TO operator. That pattern performs a prefix match rather than an anchored, label-boundary comparison, so a hostname that merely begins with the same string as a legitimate proxy access URL is also treated as that proxy. Because the trust decision is made on the hostname, an attacker who owns such a prefix-shaped domain can stand in for the real proxy during the /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect flow and receive the application_connect API key that is handed back to the redirect target. This is CWE-522 (Insufficiently Protected Credentials): the credential is transmitted to a party that should not have been considered a trusted endpoint. The NVD-style CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P, scope-changed with high confidentiality and integrity impact) aligns with our independent assessment of CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N - network-reachable, requiring authenticated attacker privileges and user interaction, with no availability impact but cross-boundary confidentiality and integrity consequences.

DescriptionCVE.org

Coder before 2.29.20, 2.33.0 before 2.33.12, 2.34.0 before 2.34.8, and 2.35.0 before 2.35.4 contains an improper hostname validation flaw in GetWorkspaceProxyByHostname whose SIMILAR TO pattern performs a prefix match, so any domain that is a string prefix of a workspace-proxy access URL is trusted as a proxy. Attackers owning such a domain can lure an authenticated victim to a crafted /api/v2/applications/auth-redirect link, capture the redirected application_connect API key, and replay it to access the victim's workspace apps.

Technical POC Analysis

Class: CWE-522 (Insufficiently Protected Credentials), with CWE-601 (open redirect) and CWE-697 (incorrect comparison) as contributing weaknesses per the advisory.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Coder workspace deployments on affected releases face targeted credential theft that could let an attacker reach users' workspace applications and expose application data. The risk is concentrated in environments with configured workspace proxies and depends on victim interaction, so leadership should prioritize asset inventory and proxy configuration review over broad emergency action. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the absence of a vendor patch means exposure should be reduced until a fix is available.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include removing or reconfiguring workspace-proxy entries that could accept a prefix-shaped attacker hostname, restricting trusted proxy domains, monitoring for crafted auth-redirect links and application_connect key replay, and rotating potentially exposed API keys.
