MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target Coder deployment (2.0.0 through 2.34.7) to serve workspace apps on trusted subdomains, and the attacker must induce a user to click a crafted link whose URL path begins with double slashes so that handleAPIKeySmuggling emits it as a scheme-relative redirect. Key limiting factors: it is an open redirect only (no code execution, data read, or session theft directly), success depends on victim user interaction (UI:P) and social engineering, and the payload must be hosted on/through a legitimate workspace app subdomain of the target instance rather than an arbitrary host. No authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N), but the practical impact is confined to phishing/redirection. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely medium/low-priority issue despite being network-reachable. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) and the 5.3 base score correctly capture an open redirect (CWE-601): reachable over the network without authentication but requiring the victim to interact with (click) an attacker-crafted link, with only limited integrity impact (VI:L) and no confidentiality or availability impact (VC:N/VA:N) and no subsequent-system impact (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or automatable exploitation. The signals are internally consistent - this is a classic phishing-enabler, not a system-compromise bug: its real value to an attacker is lending legitimacy to phishing by abusing a trusted workspace-app subdomain, so impact depends entirely on a user being socially engineered. Verify affected-version range against the GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-98qx-9p2x-c4wh), as that is the only patch-level source referenced. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker registers or identifies a victim organization's Coder deployment and crafts a URL on a trusted workspace app subdomain whose path begins with double slashes (e.g. //evil.example). When a user clicks the link, the unsanitized r.URL.Path is treated as a scheme-relative redirect and the browser is sent to the attacker-controlled site, which mimics the Coder login or workspace UI to harvest credentials. No public exploit code was identified, but open redirects are trivial to reproduce from the description, and success requires the victim to click (UI:P). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026
Open redirect in Coder workspace-app proxy (versions 2.0.0 through 2.34.7) lets unauthenticated attackers craft links on trusted workspace app subdomains that bounce victims to attacker-controlled sites. The flaw lives in the handleAPIKeySmuggling path handling: a request path beginning with a double slash is emitted as a scheme-relative redirect, so 'https://<workspace>.coder.example//evil.tld' is resolved by the browser as https://evil.tld. Impact is confined to phishing and credential-harvesting redirection (no code execution, data read, or direct session theft), it requires victim user interaction, and no public exploit code or in-the-wild exploitation was identified at time of analysis; severity is medium-to-low, so patching should be scheduled rather than treated as an emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Coder to 2.34.8 or later, the first release that fixes handleAPIKeySmuggling path handling (vendor-released patch: 2.34.8); confirm the new build on every deployment, including self-hosted instances pinned to a 2.x release, and follow GHSA-98qx-9p2x-c4wh for the authoritative change set. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, place a reverse-proxy or ingress rule in front of workspace app subdomains that rejects or collapses request paths beginning with '//' before they reach Coder (for example an nginx normalize/rewrite rule or a WAF rule matching '^//') - the trade-off is that any internal application that legitimately emits protocol-relative paths will break. Optionally restrict who may publish workspace apps and disable public or unauthenticated app sharing through template and deployment permissions, which shrinks the set of trusted subdomains an attacker can stage links on and reduces phishing plausibility, at the cost of some developer convenience. Because the residual risk is an open redirect only, pair these measures with user-facing guidance not to trust workspace-app URLs that change host after a click; HSTS alone does not mitigate scheme-relative redirects, since the browser will simply follow the redirect to the attacker's HTTPS site.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Coder serves each workspace application on its own subdomain of the deployment's app host, with an internal proxy component (handleAPIKeySmuggling) responsible for forwarding requests into the workspace and preserving the original request path from r.URL.Path. The handler fails to normalize or reject paths that begin with a double slash. Per RFC 3986, '//host/path' is a network-path reference (a protocol-relative URL), so when the handler reflects that path into a Location header, browsers interpret the value as an authority change and navigate to the attacker's host while the link the victim clicked still appears to belong to the trusted workspace subdomain. The root cause is CWE-601 (URL Redirection to Untrusted Site / Open Redirect) in the Go net/http request-handling layer, not a memory-safety or injection flaw. The supplied CPE, cpe:2.3:a:coder:coder:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covers the whole Coder platform, and the preconditions are deployment-specific: the instance must serve workspace apps on subdomains that users are conditioned to trust, and the crafted path must be reachable through a legitimate workspace app host rather than an arbitrary attacker domain.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Coder from 2.0.0 before 2.34.8 contains an open redirect vulnerability in handleAPIKeySmuggling that allows attackers to redirect users externally via unsanitized r.URL.Path values. Attackers can craft links on trusted workspace app subdomains with paths beginning with double slashes, which become scheme-relative redirects to attacker sites for phishing.
