| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application or service actually parse an attacker-supplied image file containing a malformed XMP profile (a string that is not correctly terminated) using a vulnerable ImageMagick build in the 7.1.1-7 through pre-7.1.2-32 range - e.g. any upload/thumbnailing/conversion pipeline that feeds untrusted images into ImageMagick. Limiting factors: the deployment must process untrusted images, must be running an affected version, and the realistic outcome is a process crash (denial of service) rather than code execution or confirmed data disclosure, which caps the practical severity. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, not top-tier, priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated trigger, which sounds serious, but the impact metrics tell the real story: VC:N/VI:N/VA:L means the only assessed impact is partial availability loss - i.e. an application crash (denial of service), with no confidentiality or integrity impact. The 6.9 score is driven by easy triggerability against a widely-deployed component, not by a severe outcome. Note a tension worth verifying: CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) and the 'Information Disclosure' tag imply potential memory disclosure, yet the vendor-assigned vector sets VC:N, indicating the over-read manifests as a crash rather than attacker-readable data leakage - treat 'information disclosure' as unconfirmed and the realistic outcome as DoS. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or automated exploitation. Overall: a patch-worthy DoS bug in a high-footprint library, but absent exploitation signals it is a routine-prioritization issue rather than an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads or submits a crafted image whose XMP profile is malformed (incorrectly terminated string) to a service that processes images with a vulnerable ImageMagick version. When ImageMagick parses the XMP profile it reads past the end of the allocated heap buffer, crashing the process and denying service to legitimate users. No public exploit code was provided, and the assessed impact is a crash rather than confirmed data exfiltration. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Malformed XMP metadata profiles in ImageMagick builds from 7.1.1-7 up to (but not including) 7.1.2-32 cause a heap buffer over-read that lets an attacker read past the end of an allocated buffer and typically crash the process. The flaw sits in the XMP profile synchronization code and is reachable by unauthenticated remote attackers (CVSS:4.0 PR:N/UI:N) whenever a service parses an untrusted image - upload handlers, thumbnailers, format converters, PDF/report generators, or any pipeline using an affected library build. Impact is limited to availability (VC:N/VI:N/VA:L, independently assessed as CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), so the realistic outcome is a denial-of-service crash rather than code execution or confirmed data disclosure; no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry has been identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-32 or later; the vendor advisory at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-jph3-37cg-79wg confirms a vendor-released patch, and the corresponding upstream fix is commit 7605c7619da77a5ff1ccf4ec159f3ec782c6bda7 (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/commit/7605c7619da77a5ff1ccf4ec159f3ec782c6bda7), which restores proper NUL termination of rewritten XMP values. Where immediate upgrade is impossible, isolate and constrain the image-parsing path: run ImageMagick conversions in a sandboxed, low-privilege process or container with tight memory/CPU limits and no access to sensitive filesystems (trade-off: converts a memory-safety fault into a contained crash and requires container/process plumbing, but does not stop the crash itself); use ImageMagick's policy.xml to disable coders and delegate/ghostscript paths that are not required by the application and to set resource limits such as memory and disk (trade-off: legitimate formats outside the allow-list will fail to process); and strip or reject embedded XMP profiles from untrusted input before it reaches ImageMagick using a separately sandboxed metadata tool, or reject images whose XMP blocks are oversized or malformed (trade-off: breaks workflows that rely on XMP-derived resolution, orientation and color metadata, and the pre-processor itself becomes part of the attack surface). Because the assessed impact is denial of service only, ensuring the affected service can restart cleanly and rate-limiting or queuing untrusted image submissions are reasonable interim controls; do not treat this as a data-disclosure or code-execution emergency, but patch promptly since the library is widely embedded.

Technical ContextAI · show details
XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is the RDF/XML metadata block embedded in JPEG, TIFF, PNG, PDF and other image formats, commonly carrying tiff:XResolution, tiff:YResolution, tiff:ResolutionUnit and tiff:Orientation values that ImageMagick keeps in sync with the image's own properties. In MagickCore/profile.c the routine SyncXMPProfile() locates these values via GetXMPOffsets() and rewrites them with ReplaceXMPValue(), which allocates a replacement buffer sized to the new value. That path failed to write a terminating NUL byte at the end of the newly built value, so the buffer was not correctly string-terminated; subsequent string operations in ImageMagick (and any consumer of the resulting metadata string) then walked past the allocation. This is a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read arising from improper string termination (CWE-170-style root cause), and the associated upstream commit renames the XMP helpers (ReplaceXmpValue to ReplaceXMPValue, GetXmpOffsets to GetXMPOffsets, SyncXmpProfile to SyncXMPProfile) and adds the missing *(datum+new_length)='\0'; termination assignment. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard, so downstream consumers of the ImageMagick library - PHP Imagick, GraphicsMagick-style wrappers, thumbnail services, container image tooling - inherit the exposure wherever an affected library build processes attacker-supplied images.

DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick 7.1.1-7 before 7.1.2-32 contains a heap buffer over-read vulnerability that allows attackers to read beyond allocated memory due to incorrect string termination in XMP profiles. Attackers can supply a crafted image containing a malformed XMP profile to trigger the over-read and crash the application.

Attack Technique
A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
