MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to parse an attacker-supplied image whose embedded XMP profile contains malicious XML with circular entity declarations, processed through ImageMagick's internal xml-tree parser (ValidateEntities/ParseInternalDoctype). No authentication or user interaction is required (PR:N/UI:N) where the image reaches an automated processing pipeline. Limiting factors: the application must actually decode/parse the XMP metadata via a vulnerable ImageMagick version (before 7.1.2-32 or 6.9.13-57), and impact is confined to hanging the processing operation/thread (CPU/resource exhaustion) - there is no memory corruption, data exposure, or code execution. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity availability-only denial of service. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 5.3) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated trigger with no confidentiality or integrity impact and only partial (A:L) availability impact - consistent with CWE-835 (infinite loop) where a single processing operation hangs rather than the host crashing. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no signal of active exploitation or weaponization; exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic priority is driven less by severity and more by exposure: ImageMagick is frequently invoked server-side on untrusted uploaded images, so an attacker who can submit an image to such a pipeline can stall worker threads/processes and degrade service. Note the AV:N rating reflects that the malicious image is typically delivered over a network to an automated processor; there is no remote interactive access - verify your own deployment actually parses XMP metadata via ImageMagick before prioritizing. No conflicting signals were found, but the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data means prioritization should rest on your exposure (untrusted image intake) rather than threat intelligence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads an image embedding a crafted XMP profile to a web service that uses ImageMagick for processing (e.g., avatar/thumbnail generation). When ImageMagick's internal XML parser handles the profile's circular entity declarations, it enters an infinite loop, hanging the worker and consuming CPU. No public exploit code was identified, but the trigger requires only a single malformed file and no authentication. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Denial of service in ImageMagick caused by an infinite loop when parsing XMP metadata: a crafted XMP profile embedded in an image drives the internal XML entity parser into a non-terminating loop, so the image processing operation never completes and the worker thread or process burns CPU indefinitely. All builds prior to 7.1.2-32 (7.x line) and 6.9.13-57 (6.x line) are affected, including the many applications and language bindings that embed ImageMagick for thumbnail generation, upload validation, or media pipelines. The flaw is remotely triggerable and unauthenticated (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 5.3) wherever an attacker-supplied image reaches an automated parser; impact is limited to availability (hang/resource exhaustion) with no memory corruption, data disclosure, or code execution, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-32 or later, or to 6.9.13-57 or later on the legacy branch, using the release tags at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-32 and https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/releases/tag/6.9.13-57 (the upstream fixes are commits e4f7ad983df6c831832eba3689f96b75f8b67051 and 27e36ca5cb446664bfc284d28d91fced8887b025). Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most reliable compensating control is process isolation with a hard external timeout: run image conversion in a disposable, resource-capped worker or container and kill it on a wall-clock deadline, which converts an unbounded hang into a bounded failure - the trade-off is that deliberately slow but legitimate large images may be aborted, so size the timeout from real workload telemetry. A second option is to strip metadata before ImageMagick ever sees the file (for example, remove XMP with exiftool or an equivalent pre-processor at ingest), which eliminates the attack surface entirely but discards metadata your application may rely on. ImageMagick's policy.xml resource limits, including a time resource limit, can slow runaway operations, but enforcement is not guaranteed across all code paths, so treat them as defense in depth rather than a fix. Also consider capping input file size and metadata packet size, and monitor for long-running or CPU-pinned conversion processes as a detection signal for exploitation attempts. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so prioritization can follow normal patch cadence, but the low patch complexity and the ubiquity of ImageMagick in upload pipelines favor scheduling the upgrade promptly.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability lives in ImageMagick's hand-rolled XML parser, MagickCore/xml-tree.c (magick/xml-tree.c in the 6.x tree), which is used to interpret XMP metadata packets embedded in image containers such as JPEG APP1 segments, PNG iTXt chunks, and TIFF tag 700. XMP is itself an RDF/XML document and may carry an internal DTD, so the parser's ParseInternalDoctype() and ValidateEntities() routines walk entity declarations recursively and must detect self-referential or circular entity graphs to avoid looping forever. The fix exposes the root cause precisely: ValidateEntities() hard-coded the '&' character as its scan terminator, so parameter-entity references (which are delimited by '%' rather than '&') were never terminated or validated, allowing a circular declaration chain to be walked endlessly (CWE-835, Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition). The patch introduces a 'delimiter' parameter, calls ValidateEntities() twice (once with '%' and once with '&') so both general and parameter entities are checked, changes a == 0 comparison to MagickFalse for clarity, and casts the strtol() results for character references to int. Corrupted multi-byte sequence handling and the circular-entity warning message were also tidied. Note that the fix is in metadata parsing, not in a decoder for pixel data, which is why the CVSS vector scores only Low availability impact rather than a full-scope DoS.

2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57, a crafted XMP profile embedded in an image can cause the profile parser to enter an infinite loop, preventing image processing from completing. This issue is fixed in versions 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57.
