Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated staff-level account on the Ghost instance (PR:L) with access to the admin API. The attacker must be able to supply query/ordering options to admin API endpoints (the patched restrictAdminApiQueryOptions path), which is why the flaw affects deployments where staff users exist and can reach the admin API. Exploitation is LIMITED by the need for a trusted staff account, high attack complexity (AC:H) in deriving anything meaningful, and the fact that only relative ordering - not the hashes or passwords - is exposed. Affects versions from 0.7.2 up to but not including 6.64.0.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals agree rather than conflict. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.1 (LOW) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N reflects that exploitation requires an already-authenticated staff-level account (PR:L), high attack complexity (AC:H), and yields only limited confidentiality impact (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect. The CWE-203 classification (observable discrepancy / side-channel) matches the description: a staff user can infer the *relative ordering* of other staff users' hashed passwords via admin API query/ordering options, but this does not disclose the hashes themselves and offers no practical path to password recovery. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, SSVC decision, or POC was provided in the input; absence of these is consistent with a low-value, hard-to-weaponize bug rather than indicating a hidden priority. The confidentiality impact is marginal and the precondition (trusted staff account) significantly narrows the threat population to insiders, so this is a high-CVSS-confidence-but-low-real-risk finding that should be patched in routine maintenance, not as an emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or curious staff-level user in a Ghost instance crafts admin API requests that sort or filter the user collection by the internal password field, allowing them to observe the relative ordering of other staff members' hashed passwords. No public exploit code was identified, and because the leak is only ordering metadata with high complexity to abuse, the attacker gains at most a weak side-channel that does not expose or recover any actual password.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Any authenticated staff-level user on a self-hosted Ghost instance running versions 0.7.2 through 6.63.x could infer the relative ordering of other staff users' hashed password values through admin API query options, a low-severity side-channel disclosed as CWE-203 (Observable Discrepancy). The exposure is limited: raw hashes and passwords are never returned, and turning ordering metadata into a usable credential requires substantial additional effort, which is reflected in the CVSS:3.1 base score of 3.1 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) - a trusted staff account is a prerequisite, attack complexity is high, and only low confidentiality impact is assessed. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no indication of active exploitation; the issue is fixed in Ghost 6.64.0 via the upstream PR and commit referenced in the advisory.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Ghost 6.64.0 (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/releases/tag/v6.64.0), which applies restrictAdminApiQueryOptions across the affected admin API endpoints and removes the ability to order results by restricted fields such as the password hash; if you track source, the corresponding changes are in PR https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/pull/30760 and commit https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/commit/4fb587e4d49667f929b87f7d6a873ae5e9cc087f, and the advisory is https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-53vv-xm9f-mm82. For environments that cannot upgrade immediately, the practical compensating control is tightening the trust boundary around the admin API: restrict admin API access to a small set of vetted staff accounts and place it behind network controls (IP allowlists, VPN, or an authenticating reverse proxy), recognizing that this only reduces the pool of users who can reach the oracle and does not close the underlying response-ordering leak; additionally, audit and rotate Ghost staff credentials and API keys, and review admin API logs for unusual order or filter parameters on user-listing endpoints, with the trade-off that log review is detective rather than preventive and adds operational overhead. Removing or demoting non-essential staff accounts reduces exposure because exploitation strictly requires an authenticated staff-level session (PR:L) and the impact is limited to low-value ordering inference rather than hash or password disclosure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Ghost is a Node.js content management system whose admin API controllers pass client-supplied query options (filter, order, limit, page) directly into the underlying bookshelf model layer via calls such as models.User.findPage(frame.options). Because ordering directives were not validated or stripped, a staff user could request results ordered by a restricted field - in this case the hashed password column - and observe the resulting sequence of returned records, turning the password column into a comparison oracle. This is a textbook CWE-203 observable discrepancy: the application leaks information indirectly through an observable behavioral difference rather than through direct disclosure of the secret, which is why only relative ordering and not actual hash values are exposed. The fix introduces a shared helper, restrictAdminApiQueryOptions in ghost/core/core/server/api/endpoints/utils/api-filter-utils.js, and applies it across affected endpoints including actions, automated-emails, emails (Email, EmailBatch, EmailRecipientFailure), invites, labels, members, and pages, replacing the prior narrower rejectAdminApiRestrictedFieldsTransformer approach. The CPE entry (cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected product is TryGhost Ghost, with the version range bounded by the advisory narrative rather than by the CPE version field.

DescriptionCVE.org

Ghost is a Node.js content management system. From 0.7.2 until 6.64.0, any staff-level user was able to determine the relative ordering of other staff users' hashed passwords. This does not directly disclose password hashes, and does not provide a practical path to recovering a password. This issue is fixed in version 6.64.0.
