| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account with at least the Author role (the default capability to create and edit Envira galleries); no special non-default configuration is needed, and the vulnerable behavior exists out of the box in versions before 1.16.2. Exploitation is limited by: (1) the need for a valid Author-or-above account on the target site, (2) disclosure scope restricted to only the title and excerpt of hidden posts (private/draft/pending/trashed) - not their full body, and (3) no write/modify or denial-of-service capability. Sites that do not provision Author-level or higher accounts to untrusted parties are effectively not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a low-severity information-disclosure issue (vendor CVSS 2.7, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) and should be treated as a hardening/defense-in-depth fix rather than an emergency. The signals are internally consistent toward LOW real-world risk: the scope is tightly limited to disclosing only the title and excerpt of other users' private, draft, pending, and trashed posts - no full content, no integrity or availability impact (C:L/I:N/A:N). Publicly available exploit code exists (WPScan), which modestly raises the chance of opportunistic abuse, but exploitation is NOT confirmed in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - POC availability must not be conflated with in-the-wild exploitation. One notable tension: the vendor vector sets PR:H, yet the description states the vulnerable capability belongs to 'Author and above by default' - the Author role is a relatively low, not high, privilege level in WordPress, so PR:L is arguably more accurate; this discrepancy slightly understates reachability (any Author-level account qualifies) but does not change the low impact ceiling. Bottom line: a genuine but minor multi-tenant confidentiality leak, relevant mainly to WordPress sites that grant Author+ accounts to semi-trusted or numerous users (e.g., multi-author blogs, membership sites); single-admin sites face negligible risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a multi-author WordPress site, a logged-in user with the Author role (a default capability) creates a gallery and adds image/attachment identifiers they do not own; because the plugin never checks that the attachment belongs to a post the caller may view, the gallery response leaks the title and excerpt of other users' private, draft, pending, or trashed posts. Public exploit code is available via WPScan, making the technique trivially reproducible by any authenticated Author. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 11, 2026
Authenticated information disclosure in the Envira Gallery WordPress plugin affects all versions before 1.16.2, allowing any user who can create or edit a gallery - Author role and above by default - to retrieve the title and excerpt of other users' private, draft, pending, and trashed posts that WordPress would normally withhold. The flaw is a missing authorization check (CWE-200) on the image identifier supplied when adding media to a gallery, and it is rated low severity (vendor CVSS 2.7, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N; our independent assessment lowers the privilege requirement to PR:L since Author is the default capability for gallery editing). Publicly available exploit code exists, but there is no indication of confirmed active exploitation, and a vendor fix is available in version 1.16.2.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the Envira Gallery plugin to version 1.16.2 or later, which adds the missing permission check on the image identifier; verify completion in the WordPress Plugins screen or with WP-CLI (wp plugin update envira-gallery-lite) and confirm the reported version is at least 1.16.2. Because exploitation requires an authenticated Author-or-above account, effective compensating controls are account-centric: audit and remove or downgrade Author+ accounts that do not need gallery editing, restrict registration and role assignment so untrusted users cannot reach Author level, and rotate or review credentials for existing authors. Administrators who cannot patch immediately can deactivate the plugin - the trade-off being complete loss of gallery functionality on the site - or, if galleries must remain, limit plugin editing to a tightly controlled set of trusted accounts until the update is applied. No configuration toggle or firewall rule reliably blocks this class of authenticated plugin-side data leak, so patching or role restriction is preferred; see the WPScan advisory at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/bc899a2c-4b79-42a3-a313-a9fa2c3709c7/ and the NVD entry at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-104681 for details. Given the low severity and read-only, title/excerpt-limited impact, treat this as a hardening and defense-in-depth fix rather than an emergency change.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Envira Gallery is a commercial WordPress media/gallery plugin that stores image references as attachment IDs and returns associated attachment metadata (title and excerpt) when galleries are rendered or edited. The root cause is a missing object-level authorization check (CWE-200, Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): the handler that resolves an added image identifier does not call a capability check such as current_user_can( 'read_post', $attachment_id ) before returning post fields. Because WordPress attachment records and their parent posts carry statuses (private, draft, pending, trash), an unauthorised caller can enumerate identifiers belonging to hidden content and read the returned title/excerpt even though the underlying posts are not readable through normal WordPress interfaces. Exploitation requires an authenticated session with the default gallery-editing capability (Author or above), over the network, with no user interaction and no non-default configuration; it is a read-only disclosure limited to those two fields and carries no integrity or availability impact. The CPE record cpe:2.3:a:unknown:envira_gallery:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that the vendor mapping is unresolved, so version verification should be done against the plugin's own changelog rather than CPE matching.

The Envira Gallery WordPress plugin before 1.16.2 does not verify that an image identifier added to a gallery refers to a media attachment the caller is permitted to view, allowing any user able to create and edit a gallery (Author and above by default) to disclose the title and excerpt of other users' private, draft, pending and trashed posts that WordPress would otherwise withhold from them.
