| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the FireCluster high-availability clustering feature to be enabled and the attacker to be positioned on the cluster state-synchronization network segment (AV:A adjacent, with AT:P indicating a specific attack requirement). No authentication is required (PR:N) and no user interaction is needed (UI:N), but the attacker must be able to inject crafted synchronization traffic onto that segment. The principal limiting factor is network segmentation: FireCluster sync links are typically deployed on a dedicated, isolated interface/VLAN, so a properly segregated sync network prevents an external or general-LAN attacker from reaching it. Impact is limited to forced VPN tunnel termination (availability), not compromise of confidentiality or full integrity. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity, situationally-constrained availability issue rather than a high-urgency emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H) scores 6.0 and the signals are internally consistent: exploitation is unauthenticated (PR:N) but requires an adjacent position (AV:A) on the cluster synchronization segment plus a specific attack requirement (AT:P), which materially limits reach. Impact is skewed to availability (VA:H - forced VPN tunnel termination) with only low integrity impact and no confidentiality impact, so this is a disruption/DoS-class flaw, not a code-execution or data-exposure flaw. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no PoC/exploit reference are present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The vendor-assigned priority is 'this_month', aligning with a patch-on-normal-cadence posture rather than immediate action. The main caveat: AT:P and AV:A mean an attacker must already be on the normally-isolated FireCluster sync network, so real-world exploitability hinges on whether that segment is properly segregated - a correctly deployed dedicated sync link sharply reduces practical risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has gained a foothold on the dedicated FireCluster state-synchronization network segment sends crafted, unauthenticated cluster synchronization traffic to a Fireware OS cluster member. Because the sync feature does not authenticate this traffic (CWE-294), the attacker can force premature termination of active VPN tunnels, disrupting remote-access and site-to-site connectivity. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and success depends on the attacker first reaching the adjacent sync segment. |

WatchGuard Fireware OS leaves the FireCluster state-synchronization exchange without authentication, so an attacker who can place crafted traffic on the cluster sync segment can force premature termination of VPN tunnels carried by the firewall. Only deployments with FireCluster high-availability enabled and a sync link reachable by the attacker are exposed; an unauthenticated, no-interaction attacker on that adjacent segment is sufficient, per the assessed vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). Impact is availability-only (forced tunnel drops plus limited integrity impact), confidentiality is unaffected, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis - the practical barrier is network segmentation, since sync links are normally pinned to a dedicated isolated interface or VLAN.
RemediationAI
WatchGuard has released fixed builds - upgrade to Fireware OS 2026.4 on the 2025.1 branch, 12.5.22 on the 12.5 branch, or 12.12.4 on the 12.12 branch, following the vendor advisory at https://psirt.watchguard.com/CVE-2026-104381. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating control is to enforce the intended deployment model for FireCluster: move state synchronization onto a dedicated, isolated interface or VLAN that no general user LAN, WAN, or guest segment can reach, and apply host/network ACLs so only the peer cluster member addresses can send to the sync interface - the trade-off is that a misconfigured or shared sync segment leaves the flaw fully reachable, and VLAN-only separation on a flat layer-2 domain remains bypassable. Note that segmentation reduces exposure but does not correct the missing authentication in the protocol, so the vendor update remains the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Fireware OS is the operating system running on WatchGuard Firebox appliances, and FireCluster is its high-availability pairing feature: cluster members continuously exchange state-synchronization traffic over a designated sync interface so that sessions - including IPsec/SSL VPN tunnels - can fail over between peers. The flaw is a missing authentication check on that synchronization exchange, classified by the vendor under CWE-294 (Authentication Bypass by Capture-replay), meaning the sync protocol accepts messages without verifying that they originate from a legitimate cluster peer. Because the trust boundary is the sync segment itself rather than a credential, anyone who can inject packets onto that segment can drive cluster state changes, and the concrete observed effect is premature VPN tunnel teardown. The CVSS 4.0 vector supplied by the vendor scores this 6.0 with AT:P (a specific prerequisite must be met) and AV:A, reflecting that reachability of the sync network is the gating condition rather than any weakness in the VPN cryptography itself.
