| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim to extract or process a maliciously crafted Content Credentials file using one of the affected components (the c2patool CLI, the c2pa Rust SDK, or the @contentauth/c2pa-web JS SDK). The limiting factors are significant: the attack vector is local (AV:L), so the malicious file must reach and be opened on the target system, and user interaction is mandatory (UI:R) - the vulnerability cannot trigger without the victim actively extracting the crafted asset. No attacker authentication is required (PR:N). Exposure is confined to systems and applications that use these SDKs/tool to handle untrusted C2PA assets; environments that only produce or verify trusted, first-party content are not realistically exposed. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity path traversal (CWE-22) enabling arbitrary file write, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, base 5.5) correctly reflects a local attack vector that requires victim user interaction - the victim must extract a maliciously crafted file - which caps real-world severity well below a remote-code-execution emergency. PR:N means no attacker authentication is needed, but the UI:R and AV:L constraints mean this cannot be exploited remotely or automatically; it depends on social-engineering a user into processing an attacker-supplied file through the vulnerable tooling. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The affected components are developer SDKs and a CLI tool (c2patool, the C2PA Rust SDK, and the Content Credentials JS SDK), so exposure is scoped to applications and pipelines that build on these libraries to process untrusted Content Credentials assets. Net: a legitimate issue to patch on a normal cadence, not a drop-everything priority - the I:H write primitive could be chained toward code execution (e.g., overwriting a config or startup file), but the local+UI prerequisites keep realistic risk at moderate. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious Content Credentials asset or archive containing path-traversal sequences in embedded file paths and distributes it (e.g., via a shared media file or supply-chain artifact). When a victim extracts or processes that file using c2patool or an application built on the affected C2PA SDKs, the tool writes attacker-controlled content to a location outside the intended directory. No public proof-of-concept was identified in the provided data. |

Arbitrary file write via path traversal in Adobe Content Credentials SDK components (the c2patool CLI, the c2pa Rust SDK, and the @contentauth/c2pa-web JavaScript SDK) allows an attacker to write files outside intended directories by supplying a maliciously crafted C2PA asset that a victim extracts. The attack is local (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R)-the victim must actively open or extract the crafted file-while no attacker authentication is required (PR:N). Severity is moderate (CVSS 5.5) with integrity-only impact, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Patch available per vendor advisory: consult Adobe PSIRT advisory apsb26-163 at https://www.adobe.com/trust/security/products/content-credentials-sdk/apsb26-163.html and upgrade c2patool, the c2pa Rust SDK, and the @contentauth/c2pa-web JavaScript SDK to the fixed versions specified there. Until patched, treat all untrusted C2PA assets as potentially dangerous-avoid extracting or processing third-party Content Credentials files, or do so only inside a least-privileged, isolated sandbox or container with no write access outside a disposable working directory. Running the tool as a non-privileged user and against read-only mounts limits the impact of a successful traversal but does not remove the write primitive; disabling any automatic extraction of untrusted assets, where configurable, further reduces exposure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a path traversal (CWE-22) in the Content Credentials tooling that implements the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard for embedding provenance metadata and associated resources into asset files. When the c2patool CLI, the c2pa Rust crate, or the @contentauth/c2pa-web JS SDK processes a maliciously crafted file, it fails to properly limit the output pathname to a restricted directory, permitting an attacker to influence where extracted content is written. Because the assessed vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, exploitation requires the malicious file to reach the target system and a victim to extract it, and successful exploitation yields arbitrary file system write (integrity high, confidentiality and availability unaffected). Affected versions per EUVD are c2patool up to c2patool-v0.27.15, the c2pa Rust SDK up to c2pa-v0.90.15, and the @contentauth/c2pa-web JS SDK up to @contentauth/c2pa-web@0.13.4.

Attack is local via a file the victim must extract (AV:L, UI:R), needs no attacker auth (PR:N); arbitrary file write yields high integrity impact with no disclosure or direct availability loss (I:H, C:N, A:N).

DescriptionCVE.org
CAI Content Credential is affected by an Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') vulnerability that could result in an arbitrary file system write. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to write to unauthorized files or directories outside of intended restrictions. Exploitation of this issue requires user interaction in that a victim must extract a maliciously crafted file.
