Network-exploitable with no stated privileges (PR:N) but AC:H reflects the required precondition of an n8n node holding an API key (4.0 AT:P); high C/I from exposed workflows and credential secrets, low A.

Lifecycle Timeline
6DescriptionCVE.org
n8n versions before 1.123.80, from 2.0.0 before 2.39.6, and from 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the n8n node that fails to validate resource identifiers. Attackers can craft malicious resource IDs to redirect API calls to unintended resources, allowing unauthorized access to workflows, executions, and credential secrets within the API key's scope.

AnalysisAI
Path traversal in the n8n node of the n8n workflow automation platform lets an attacker supply a crafted resource identifier that redirects the node's authenticated API calls to unintended resources, exposing workflows, execution data, and stored credential secrets that fall inside the scope of the API key in use. Affected deployments are n8n before 1.123.80, 2.0.0 through 2.39.6, and 2.40.0 through 2.40.1; patched builds (1.123.80, 2.39.6, 2.40.1) remove the exposure. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires reaching n8n's 'n8n node' functionality that issues API calls authenticated by a configured n8n API key; the attacker must be able to supply or influence the resource identifier consumed by that node. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:L, base 8.1) describes a network-exploitable flaw with no stated privileges but an Attack Requirement present (AT:P), consistent with the description's qualifier that access is bounded 'within the API key's scope' - i.e., exploitation presupposes an n8n node configured with an API key credential. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade to n8n 1.123.80 (1.x branch), 2.39.6 (2.x branch), or 2.40.1 (2.40.x branch) - patch availability is confirmed by the vendor advisory at https://github.com/n8n-io/n8n/security/advisories/GHSA-89p4-6h98-c7xm and cross-referenced by VulnCheck (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/n8n-before-1.123.80-2.39.6-and-2.40.1-path-traversal-via-n8n-node). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every n8n deployment and identify instances running affected builds (anything before 1.123.80, 2.0.0 through 2.39.6, or 2.40.0 through 2.40.1), and rotate or disable n8n API keys whose authorization scope reaches sensitive workflows, execution data, or stored credentials. …
