| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a network-reachable Gitea instance running a version before 1.21.2 that hosts at least one private (or limited-visibility) individual user account with a projects page. Per the CVSS vector (PR:N/UI:N), exploitation is unauthenticated and needs no user interaction - an anonymous HTTP GET to the private user's project route (e.g. /{user}/-/projects) suffices, because individual user permissions were not checked after org-assignment. Limiting factors: impact is confined to disclosure of private user project pages (C:L, no I/A impact); the instance must expose such private user projects and be reachable by the attacker; patched versions (1.21.2+) return HTTP 404 to anonymous and non-owner, non-admin users. |
| Impact | Signals are consistent and point to a genuine but modest-severity information-disclosure issue rather than a top-priority emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 5.3 Medium) describes a remotely reachable, trivially executed, unauthenticated flaw affecting only confidentiality at a LOW level, with no integrity or availability impact - matching CWE-359 (exposure of private information). EPSS is low at 0.36% (27th percentile), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and no public exploit is indicated; these three low-probability signals reinforce one another and argue against widespread active exploitation. The only amplifying factor is that no authentication or user interaction is required, so exploitation is technically easy - but the payoff is limited to viewing private user project pages, not code execution or credential theft. Net: a real, patch-worthy bug for Gitea operators but a routine-priority item, not a drop-everything issue. No signals conflict; the main gap is that exploit/POC status is not reported in the input (treated here as none identified). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker browsing a publicly reachable Gitea instance (version before 1.21.2) directly requests the projects URL of a private individual user, e.g. GET /user31/-/projects, and the server returns the private project page instead of a 404. No exploit code is required beyond a normal HTTP GET; the leaked data is limited to the private user's project information. No public POC is identified in the provided data, though the fix PR includes an integration test demonstrating the pre-patch behavior. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Unauthenticated information disclosure in Gitea before 1.21.2 lets an anonymous remote visitor view the projects page of a private (or otherwise non-public) individual user account. Per the CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, exploitation requires no authentication and no user interaction: a single anonymous HTTP GET to a route such as /{user}/-/projects returns data that should be restricted, because individual user permissions were never checked after org assignment. Impact is limited to confidentiality (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect; EPSS is 0.36% (27th percentile) and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in 1.21.2 (Vendor-released patch: 1.21.2), which returns HTTP 404 to anonymous and non-owner, non-admin requesters.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Gitea 1.21.2 or later (Vendor-released patch: 1.21.2), which adds the individualPermsChecker middleware and returns HTTP 404 to anonymous or unauthorized requesters of private and limited individual users' project pages; see the release notes at https://blog.gitea.com/release-of-1.21.2/ and the fix at https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/28423. Because no patched version predates 1.21.2, upgrading is the only complete fix. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include restricting network access to the Gitea instance (for example via firewall rules or a reverse proxy/allow-list) so that only trusted clients can reach the /-/projects and API user-project paths, at the cost of reducing public or remote availability; blocking or returning 404 for the pattern /{user}/-/projects at the reverse proxy (e.g., nginx location matching /-/projects) until the patch is applied, accepting the risk that a production route may be over-blocked; and auditing user Visibility settings so that no individual account relies on Private or Limited visibility for sensitive data during the exposure window. Note that merely setting users to public does not remediate the bug and changes the intended visibility posture; EPSS is low (0.36%) and no public exploit has been identified, so these measures are proportionate to a modest-severity confidentiality issue rather than an emergency.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Gitea is a self-hosted Git service written in Go. Its routing layer relies on middleware chains to authorize requests; organizational visibility is enforced in context.OrgAssignment, but the equivalent check for individual (non-organization) user accounts was missing. As a result, routes that render a user's projects - the web route /{user}/-/projects and the v1 API route under routers/api/v1/api.go - were reachable regardless of the target user's Visibility setting (Private or Limited), a gap falling under CWE-359 (Exposure of Private Personal Information to an Unauthorized Actor). The upstream fix in PR 28423 introduces an individualPermsChecker middleware applied to both the API and web routers: for an individual user with Private visibility it returns NotFound unless the requester is authenticated as that same user or is an administrator; for Limited visibility it returns NotFound to anonymous requesters. The accompanying integration test (tests/integration/project_test.go) verifies that an anonymous GET to /user31/-/projects yields HTTP 404 while the logged-in owner receives HTTP 200, confirming the intended authorization boundary.
