Exploitation Conditions

The target must be reachable as a federating Matrix homeserver and must be running an affected build (Conduit <0.10.10, continuwuity <0.5.0, tuwunel <1.4.8, or Grapevine before commit 9a50c244); the vulnerable path is the federation endpoint PUT /_matrix/federation/v2/invite/{roomId}/{eventId}, which fails to validate that the request origin matches the event's user. Forging 'leave' events requires no account on the target (the server accepts any federation request whose state_key is a valid local user ID). Forging 'invite' events additionally requires the attacker to control an account on some server that holds the power level to send invites in the room, and forging 'ban' events requires the impersonated victim to hold ban power and the ban target to reside on the same server as the victim (cross-server bans and self-bans are not possible). The documented workaround - blocking the invite endpoint at the reverse proxy - limits only the invite-forging path. Limiting factor: operators who have patched or who are not exposed to open federation are not exploitable.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.9 is driven by a fully remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) with high impact to confidentiality, integrity and availability, plus a subsequent-system confidentiality impact (SC:H) reflecting cross-room/cross-federation effects - this is consistent with the description (a remote attacker coerces the server into signing forged membership events). No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the severity is theoretical-but-credible rather than confirmed in-the-wild. The decisive mitigating factor is deployment footprint: the affected products (Conduit, continuwuity, tuwunel, Grapevine) are niche Matrix homeserver implementations, not the dominant Synapse server, so this is a genuine high priority for the specific operators running these builds but not a broad internet-wide emergency. The SSVC-style read: exploitation=none observed, technical impact=total, automatable=likely yes (unauthenticated federation request), so operators of affected servers should patch urgently while the overall population of exposed hosts is small. Note the input Tags label this 'Denial Of Service' only, which understates the confidentiality and integrity impact (private room history exposure, forged invites/bans) documented in the description - do not treat this as DoS-only.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operating any Matrix-federating server sends a crafted federation request to a vulnerable homeserver whose event state_key is a valid local user ID; because the server never validates the request origin, it cryptographically signs the forged membership event. The attacker forges a 'leave' to eject an admin/bot from a room (DoS and stripping of policy-server protections), or forges an 'invite' from a victim to themselves to join a private room and read confidential history. No public proof-of-concept was provided in the input.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Unauthenticated remote attackers can coerce Conduit-derived Matrix homeservers into cryptographically signing arbitrary membership events, because the federating homeserver never checks that a signing request actually originated from the domain of the event's sender. Affected deployments are Conduit before 0.10.10, continuwuity before 0.5.0, tuwunel before 1.4.8, and Grapevine before commit 9a50c244; exploitation requires only that the server be reachable over open federation. Attackers can forge 'leave' events to eject any local user (including admins and bots) from rooms, forge 'invite' events to pull themselves into private or invite-only rooms when they control an account with invite power, and forge 'ban' events against users who share a server with the impersonated victim - yielding denial of service, removal of room policy protections, and disclosure of confidential room history and state. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is trivially reachable by anyone who can send federation traffic to the endpoint.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a fixed build: Conduit 0.10.10, continuwuity 0.5.0 (commits 7fa4fa98, b2bead67), tuwunel 1.4.8 (commit dc9314de), or Grapevine commit 9a50c244. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, the vendor-documented workaround is to block PUT /_matrix/federation/v2/invite/{roomId}/{eventId} at the reverse proxy - note the trade-off that this also breaks legitimate inbound federated invites, so rooms on the server can no longer invite users from remote homeservers, and it does not stop the leave- or ban-forging paths. Because leave-forging needs no account on the target at all, the only effective containment short of patching is to restrict federation to a vetted allowlist of trusted peers (for example via a federation whitelist or by firewalling port 8448 and the federation endpoints to known server IPs), accepting the loss of open-federation reachability; operators who cannot do either should treat membership state in sensitive rooms as untrusted and keep off-server backups of room membership and power-level configuration. After patching, review recent m.room.member leave, invite and ban events signed by the local server for anomalies such as admin or bot departures and unexpected invites, since forged events remain in room state.

Affected ProductsAI

All Conduit-derived Matrix homeservers that have not applied the origin-validation fix are affected: Conduit prior to version 0.10.10 (fixed in the v0.10.10 release at https://gitlab.com/famedly/conduit/-/releases/v0.10.10), continuwuity prior to version 0.5.0 (fixed by commits 7fa4fa98 and b2bead67, advisory GHSA-22fw-4jq7-g8r8), tuwunel prior to version 1.4.8 (fixed by commit dc9314de1f8a6e040c5aa331fe52efbe62e6a2c3), and Grapevine prior to commit 9a50c2448abba6e2b7d79c64243bb438b351616c. No CPE strings were supplied with the source data; identification should be done by product and version banner rather than CPE matching, and any fork inheriting the Conduit federation invite handler should be presumed affected until it carries the origin check.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Matrix homeservers federate by exchanging signed PDUs over the Server-Server API, and each homeserver holds an Ed25519 signing key that authenticates the events it originates; peers trust those signatures as proof of authorship. The vulnerable handler is PUT /_matrix/federation/v2/invite/{roomId}/{eventId} in Conduit and its derivatives, which accepts an event, signs it with the local key, and returns it to the caller without verifying that the event's sender belongs to the requesting origin. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation: the request body's origin, the event's 'origin' field, and the sender's server name are never cross-checked, and the event type, room_id and membership content are not constrained. The upstream tuwunel fix illustrates the missing checks - it now requires the event 'room_id' to match the request path, requires type m.room.member, requires membership to equal 'invite', requires sender.server_name() to equal the request body origin, and requires any 'origin' field to match both. Because the only gating condition is that the event's state_key resolve to a valid local user ID, a forged event impersonating a local user is signed and accepted by the target server, giving the attacker the target's signing authority over membership state for leave, invite and (under the stated power-level and same-server constraints) ban actions. The scope change in the assessment reflects that forged state propagates to other homeservers and rooms that trust the victim server's signatures.

DescriptionCVE.org

Conduit is a chat server powered by Matrix. A vulnerability that affects a number of Conduit-derived homeservers allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to force the target server to cryptographically sign arbitrary membership events. Affected products include Conduit prior to version 0.10.10, continuwuity prior to version 0.5.0, Grapevine prior to commit 9a50c244, and tuwunel prior to version 1.4.8. The flaw exists because the server fails to validate the origin of a signing request, provided the event's state_key is a valid user ID belonging to the target server. Attackers can forge "leave" events for any user on the target server. This forcibly removes users (including admins and bots) from rooms. This allows denial of service and/or the removal of technical protections for a room (including policy servers, if all users on the policy server are removed). Attackers can forge "invite" events from a victim user to themselves, provided they have an account on a server where there is an account that has the power level to send invites. This allows the attacker to join private or invite-only rooms accessible by the victim, exposing confidential conversation history and room state. Attackers can forge "ban" events from a victim user to any user below the victim user's power level, provided the victim has the power level to issue bans AND the target of the ban resides on the same server as the victim. This allows the attacker to ban anyone in a room who is on the same server as the vulnerable one, however cannot exploit this to ban users on other servers or the victim themself. Conduit fixes the issue in version 0.10.10. continuwuity fixes the issue in commits 7fa4fa98 and b2bead67, released in 0.5.0. tuwunel fixes the issue in commit dc9314de1f8a6e040c5aa331fe52efbe62e6a2c3, released in 1.4.8. Grapevine fixes the issue in commit 9a50c2448abba6e2b7d79c64243bb438b351616c. As a workaround, block access to the PUT /_matrix/federation/v2/invite/{roomId}/{eventId} endpoint using your reverse proxy.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Conduit-derived Matrix homeserver deployments (Conduit, continuwuity, tuwunel, and Grapevine) are exposed to a critical federation trust failure that can let remote attackers forge room membership events, eject administrators, bypass invite-only controls, and disclose confidential room history. Any organization operating these homeservers with open federation should treat this as a severe availability and confidentiality risk requiring immediate exposure reduction while vendor fixes are awaited; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or restrict open federation to trusted homeservers; block and alert on anomalous membership events (leave/invite/ban); remove federation exposure for high-value private rooms; preserve logs and room-state backups; audit membership and confidential room history; apply vendor fixes when released.
