| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated account on the CVAT instance (PR:L) and that the target reach the /api/server/share endpoint, which serves the configured SHARE_ROOT directory; the attacker supplies path-traversal input ('../') to resolve outside SHARE_ROOT. Affects CVAT 2.8.1 through 2.52.0 (fixed in 2.53.0), with no known workaround. Limiting factors: exploitation is bounded to authenticated users, yields only the names of files and subdirectories (file contents remain inaccessible), and depends on the share endpoint being deployed/reachable. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity information-disclosure flaw, not a high-urgency priority. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L with VI:N/VA:N/no scope change) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requires an authenticated account (PR:L) and yields only LOW confidentiality impact - exposure of directory and file names, not file contents. All exploitation signals agree on 'low real risk': EPSS is 0.29% (20th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code is referenced (only the vendor's own regression test accompanying the fix). No SSVC decision data was provided. The one caveat is that the raw description says 'an attacker with an account,' which the CVSS correctly encodes as PR:L - so the authentication requirement is confirmed, not inferred. Net: a legitimate low-privilege-authenticated directory-enumeration bug worth patching in the normal cycle, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has registered or obtained any low-privilege account on a CVAT instance sends a crafted request to the /api/server/share endpoint containing path-traversal sequences (e.g. '../'), causing the server to resolve a path outside the intended SHARE_ROOT and list the names of files and subdirectories elsewhere on the server's filesystem. No public exploit code was identified, though the fix commit includes a test demonstrating the '../' input. The attack is remote and low-complexity but constrained to an authenticated user and discloses only names, not contents. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Directory listing disclosure in CVAT (Computer Vision Annotation Tool) versions 2.8.1 through 2.52.0 allows an authenticated attacker to enumerate the names of files and subdirectories anywhere on the CVAT server's file system that the service account can read. The flaw resides in the /api/server/share endpoint, which joins a user-supplied directory parameter onto the configured SHARE_ROOT without validating that the result stays inside that root; supplying traversal sequences such as '../' causes the resolved path to escape the intended directory. Only directory entry names are exposed - file contents are not readable - and exploitation requires a valid account on the instance (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3, independent assessment CVSS 3.1 5.3, PR:L). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV; EPSS is low at 0.29% (20th percentile). The vendor released a patch in CVAT 2.53.0, and no workarounds are documented.
RemediationAI
Upgrade CVAT to 2.53.0 or later, which contains the vendor-released patch for this issue (commit 2c24ef0c3f8fd94f6c71cff4eafcf11bfcaa5f91, advisory GHSA-3g7v-xjh7-xmqx at https://github.com/cvat-ai/cvat/security/advisories/GHSA-3g7v-xjh7-xmqx); this is the only complete fix, and the vendor states no workarounds exist. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the practical compensating controls carry real trade-offs: remove or relocate sensitive files and directories from the SHARE_ROOT tree and from any path the CVAT service account can traverse, since the flaw exposes directory entry names rather than contents but still reveals layout and naming; run the CVAT server process under an account whose read access is scoped to the minimum necessary filesystem paths, accepting that this may break share-based workflows that legitimately read from broader locations; and restrict network access to the /api/server/share endpoint with a reverse proxy or network policy limited to trusted clients, understanding that this does not stop an attacker who already has legitimate API access. Review 2.8.1-2.52.0 instances for accounts created by untrusted parties, since any authenticated user (PR:L) can trigger the traversal, and rotate or review any credentials or secrets whose storage paths may have been disclosed by filename enumeration. Monitor for anomalous 400 responses or traversal-style parameters sent to /api/server/share as a detection signal.

CVAT is an open source, web-based interactive video and image annotation platform used to build computer vision datasets, typically deployed as a Django/Python server with a REST API. The vulnerability is a classic path traversal (CWE-24, 'Path Traversal: ../filedir', a child of CWE-22) in the server-share view. The pre-patch code built the served path as (Path(settings.SHARE_ROOT) / directory_param).absolute(); Python's Path.absolute() normalizes the string against the current working directory without resolving '..' components, so a value like '../' could point outside SHARE_ROOT while still passing the endpoint's logic. The fix in commit 2c24ef0c3f8fd94f6c71cff4eafcf11bfcaa5f91 replaces .absolute() with .resolve(), which collapses traversal segments into a canonical absolute path before use. The upstream regression test test_api_v2_server_share_directory_traversal asserts that the request '../' now returns HTTP 400 with the message 'is an invalid directory', confirming the endpoint is reachable over the network and that the intended boundary is SHARE_ROOT. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:cvat:computer_vision_annotation_tool:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is not version-bounded in the feed, but the vendor advisory and changelog scope the defect to 2.8.1 through 2.52.0. Exposure is limited to metadata: the share endpoint lists directory entries, it does not return file bodies, which is why the assessed confidentiality impact is Low (VC:L) and there is no integrity or availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
CVAT is an open source interactive video and image annotation tool for computer vision. In versions 2.8.1 through 2.52.0, an attacker with an account on a CVAT instance is able to retrieve the contents of any file system directory accessible to the CVAT server. The exposed information is names of contained files and subdirectories. The contents of files are not accessible. Version 2.53.0 contains a patch. No known workarounds are available.
