| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation is NOT standalone-remote despite the AV:N rating: the attacker must first obtain the stored password values for RiteCMS v3.1.0 - typically requiring prior access to the application's backend database, a readable configuration/backup, or filesystem access to the server. Only then does the insecure encryption/weak hashing (CWE-916) in RiteCMS v3.1.0 allow recovery of plaintext credentials. Limiting factors: no evidence of a default-configuration network path to the password store, no active exploitation (not in KEV), low EPSS (0.14%), and impact is confined to confidentiality of stored credentials (I/A unaffected). The vulnerability amplifies the consequences of a separate data-exposure flaw rather than being independently triggerable. |
| Impact | This is a HIGH-CVSS-label-but-modest-real-risk issue once signals are cross-referenced. The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:L) rates it 5.3 Medium and implies a remote, unauthenticated path to limited confidentiality loss. That framing is questionable for a CWE-916 weakness: insecure password storage is not directly reachable over the network - an attacker must FIRST obtain the stored password material (via a separate database-access vector, backup exposure, or server access) before the weak encryption/hashing matters. So the AV:N/PR:N metrics overstate direct exploitability - verify with vendor/analyst. The exploitation probability is low (EPSS 0.14%, 3rd percentile) and the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. A public PoC exists (mbiesiad vulnerability-research repo), but PoC availability is a distinct signal from in-the-wild use and does not elevate this to active-exploitation status. Net: a legitimate credential-storage hardening defect that amplifies the impact of a breach, but a low operational priority absent another vulnerability that exposes the stored hashes. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has access to the RiteCMS backend data store - through a separate SQL injection, an exposed database/backup, or server compromise - retrieves the stored user passwords and, because RiteCMS v3.1.0 protects them with insecure encryption/weak hashing (CWE-916), recovers the plaintext credentials with minimal effort. A public proof-of-concept documents the weak algorithm, lowering the skill needed to reproduce the credential recovery. |

Weak password storage in RiteCMS v3.1.0 (CWE-916) allows anyone who obtains the stored credential values to recover users' plaintext passwords, including administrative accounts. The weakness is not independently remotely triggerable: the affected PHP CMS offers no default network path to its password store, so an attacker must first read the backend database, a configuration or backup file, or the server filesystem - which is why our independent assessment re-scores the issue as CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N instead of the originally published AV:N vector. EPSS is just 0.14% (3rd percentile) and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmed active exploitation, although publicly available exploit code exists in a GitHub vulnerability-research repository.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; the referenced upstream link (https://github.com/handylulu/RiteCMS) shows no tagged fix version for this issue, so no exact remediated release can be cited. The durable fix is to stop storing passwords with reversible or fast hashing and migrate credential storage to bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2id with per-user salts and a cost parameter tuned to your hardware, then force a global password reset so that already-stored weak values cannot be recovered - the trade-off being mandatory user re-authentication and code changes to both the registration and login-verification paths in functions.admin.inc.php. Because exploitation is gated on prior access to the password store rather than on network reachability, the highest-value compensating control is eliminating that precondition: restrict database, configuration file, and backup-file read access to the minimum required OS accounts, remove CMS backups and SQL dumps from web-reachable or world-readable locations, and disable directory listing and file-serving of any stored credential artifacts - accepting that these measures only remove the attacker's route to the data and do not repair the underlying weak storage. If a store has already been exposed (for example via a companion information-disclosure flaw), treat all RiteCMS credentials as compromised, rotate them immediately, and rotate any password reused on other systems, since weak storage makes offline cracking or decoding of the recovered values trivial. Keep RiteCMS deployments off untrusted networks and monitor the upstream repository for a formal patched release before re-deploying version 3.1.0 in any internet-facing capacity.

Technical ContextAI · show details
RiteCMS is a small open-source PHP content management system; the affected code path is the admin credential handling in cms/includes/functions.admin.inc.php. The flaw is classified as CWE-916, Use of Password Hash With Insufficient Computational Effort, which covers both fast/unsalted hash constructions (MD5, SHA-1, single-round SHA-256) and home-rolled reversible "encryption" of passwords - the CVE description specifically cites insecure encryption rather than a hashing strength problem. Either form makes offline credential recovery practical once the stored values are in hand: fast hashes fall to GPU/wordlist cracking, and reversible encoding collapses to simple decoding. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:ritecms:ritecms:3.1.0 identifies v3.1.0 as the catalogued affected release, and the reference set (the upstream handylulu/RiteCMS repository and its functions.admin.inc.php source file, plus a third-party vulnerability-research write-up) points to the credential-storage routine as the root cause. Because the impact is confined to confidentiality of stored credentials - integrity and availability are unaffected - the issue functions as a severity amplifier for a separate data-exposure or filesystem/backup-access flaw rather than a self-contained intrusion primitive.
