Exploitation Conditions

Requires three concrete conditions: (1) the victim imports an untrusted/attacker-supplied shared deck, which places a payload named exactly youtube-dl.exe, yt-dlp.exe, or yt-dlp_x86.exe into Anki's media folder; (2) the deck contains a YouTube link on a card that the victim actually plays, triggering mpv's youtube-dl integration; (3) an affected Anki version before 25.02.5 that still invokes mpv without '--no-ytdl'. Limiting factors: the attack is local/file-based (AV:L), depends on user interaction (importing a deck and playing the specific card), and the .exe payload names make it Windows-specific as described; it does not affect users who never import third-party decks or who are on 25.02.5 or later.

Impact

CVSS 7.8 (HIGH) is driven entirely by the full C:H/I:H/A:H impact of arbitrary code execution, not by ease of exploitation: the vector is AV:L (local/file-based) and the real attack requires a victim to import an attacker-crafted shared deck and then play a card containing a YouTube link. The exploitation-probability signals all point low: EPSS is 0.15% (4th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code was identified in the provided data. These signals are consistent - a high-impact but hard-to-mass-exploit, socially-engineered local flaw rather than an internet-facing, wormable priority. One conflict to note: NVD's vector lists PR:L/UI:N, but the described attack needs no attacker privileges on the target and does require the victim to import a deck and trigger playback, which is better modeled as PR:N/UI:R - verify against vendor. Net: real but lower-urgency; prioritize patching for users who routinely import third-party shared decks, below any remotely-exploitable KEV items.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker publishes a malicious shared Anki deck whose media bundle includes a trojanized executable named yt-dlp.exe (or youtube-dl.exe / yt-dlp_x86.exe); when a victim imports the deck the file lands in Anki's media folder. When the victim studies a card containing a YouTube link, mpv's youtube-dl integration resolves and executes the planted binary from that folder, running attacker code with the user's privileges. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation is local (AV:L) but low-complexity (AC:L) once the deck is imported and the YouTube card is played.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Arbitrary code execution in Anki versions before 25.02.5 allows a crafted shared deck to drop a malicious executable named youtube-dl.exe, yt-dlp.exe, or yt-dlp_x86.exe into Anki's media folder, which mpv then launches automatically when the victim plays a card containing a YouTube link. Exploitation is file-based and local (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R, base 7.8 HIGH): the attacker must convince the victim to import an untrusted deck and then play the specific malicious card, so the high score reflects full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact rather than ease of triggering. There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is very low at 0.15% (4th percentile); a vendor fix is available in Anki 25.02.5.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Anki 25.02.5 or later, which is the vendor-released patch; the release comparison is at https://github.com/ankitects/anki/compare/25.02.4...25.02.5 and the underlying fixes are the commits https://github.com/ankitects/anki/commit/5080451829505842b16d4a50f398ad44560a3e48 (adds "--no-ytdl" in qt/aqt/mpv.py) and https://github.com/ankitects/anki/commit/6213c9b6f99ebda181004f8915b92fe3618b939. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the following compensating controls reduce exposure with known trade-offs: (1) do not import shared decks from untrusted sources, accepting the loss of community deck content; (2) inspect and clean the Anki media folder (collection.media) for any file named youtube-dl.exe, yt-dlp.exe, or yt-dlp_x86.exe before playing media, noting this is a manual, error-prone check that must be repeated after every deck import; (3) avoid playing cards containing YouTube links from decks of unknown provenance, which degrades usability for legitimate YouTube-based cards; and (4) restrict the Anki process's write access to the media directory via OS-level file permissions where feasible, accepting that this can interfere with normal media syncing. Because the vulnerability is local and requires the victim to import a deck and play a card, endpoint detection can focus on unexpected creation or execution of youtube-dl/yt-dlp binaries from the Anki media directory.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-427 (Uncontrolled Search Path Element). Anki's desktop client uses mpv as its media backend, and mpv was being invoked with its YouTube-DL integration enabled (i.e., without the --no-ytdl flag). When a card is played and the media reference is a YouTube URL, mpv looks for a downloader binary such as youtube-dl.exe or yt-dlp.exe and executes it. Because shared decks carry a media folder that is merged into the user's Anki collection media directory on import, an attacker-crafted deck can plant a file bearing one of those exact executable names in a location mpv resolves and executes, yielding code execution with the user's privileges. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:ankitects:anki:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all 2.3 Anki releases prior to 25.02.5); the Windows-centric .exe naming means the described vector is Windows-specific, while other platforms may be affected through analogous binary names. The upstream fix disables mpv's ytdl behavior entirely by adding "--no-ytdl" to the player arguments in both qt/aqt/mpv.py (MPVBase) and qt/aqt/sound.py (SimpleMpvPlayer), closing the search-path execution path rather than validating the deck contents.

DescriptionNVD

In Ankitects Anki before 25.02.5, a crafted shared deck can place a YouTube downloader executable in the media folder, and this is executed for a YouTube link in the deck. The executable name could be youtube-dl.exe or yt-dlp.exe or yt-dlp_x86.exe.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Anki, a popular spaced-repetition study application, contains a high-severity code execution flaw in all versions before 25.02.5 that allows a malicious shared deck to place a disguised executable into the user's Anki media folder, which is then launched when the user plays a crafted card containing a YouTube link. The exposure is concentrated among staff and students who import community-sourced or untrusted decks, and a successful attack yields full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the affected endpoint. A vendor fix is available, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so the risk is readily containable through prompt patching and import hygiene.
