| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to import and process attacker-supplied content: specifically an Anki note/deck containing a crafted sound-or-video tag (e.g. [sound:...]) whose media filename encodes a path outside the media folder, because pre-25.02.6 code passed tag.filename directly instead of confining it to the media directory. The condition is triggered when Anki resolves/plays that media reference on Windows or Linux. Limiting factors: the attack is local (the malicious deck must be delivered and opened by the victim), it effectively depends on user interaction to import and play the media, it affects only versions before 25.02.6, and it is bounded to the victim's own file-write privileges - no network-facing service is exposed. |
| Impact | All signals converge on LOW real-world priority. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 3.3 with a local vector (AV:L), low complexity (AC:L), low privileges (PR:L) and no user-interaction flag (UI:N), and impact limited to integrity (C:N/I:L/A:N). EPSS reinforces this: 0.18% probability at only the 7th percentile, indicating negligible predicted exploitation. The CVE is NOT on CISA KEV and no public exploit code was identified - there is no evidence of active exploitation. One important tension: the official vector lists UI:N and PR:L, but the described exploitation path (a victim importing an attacker-crafted shared deck containing a malicious [sound:] reference) really implies attacker-supplied content plus victim action - i.e. no attacker privileges but required user interaction - so the official PR:L/UI:N combination is questionable; verify intended attack model with the vendor. A second caveat: arbitrary file write (CWE-23) can in some deployments be escalated to code execution by overwriting startup or configuration files, so the I:L rating may understate the worst-case integrity impact. Net: a genuine path-traversal file-write bug worth patching, but low urgency - not a widespread exploitation threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a malicious Anki shared deck containing a sound tag whose media pathname uses parent-directory traversal (e.g. ../) so it does not resolve inside the media folder. When a victim on Windows or Linux imports the deck and reviews a card, Anki writes the referenced media file to an attacker-chosen location outside the media folder, potentially overwriting sensitive files. No public exploit code exists, and the local vector plus the need for the victim to import and trigger the content limit practical, at-scale abuse. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Anki versions before 25.02.6 fail to confine media filenames referenced by sound/video tags to the media folder, so a crafted [sound:...] reference in an imported note or deck can cause files to be written to arbitrary locations on Windows and Linux. Exploitation is local and requires the victim to import and then play/resolve the malicious media reference, and impact is limited to integrity of the victim's own files under their own write privileges (no confidentiality or availability impact). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, CISA KEV does not list this CVE, and EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), consistent with the LOW real-world priority indicated by the assessed vector.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Anki to 25.02.6 or later (https://github.com/ankitects/anki/releases/tag/25.02.6), which incorporates the confinement fix from PR #4041 (commit 51476e05). There is no useful standalone configuration toggle that fully removes the risk in pre-25.02.6 builds, so upgrading is the primary action. Where upgrading must be deferred, compensating controls include treating untrusted .apkg decks and notes as hostile before import - only importing decks from trusted sources or after inspecting them, and avoiding playback of media references from untrusted content (declining to resolve/play [sound:...] tags), which blocks the trigger but reduces normal functionality; running Anki as a low-privilege account with write access restricted to the media/profile directory limits where any write can land, though it does not eliminate the traversal itself. Because the fix applies os.path.basename() to the referenced filename before joining it to the media folder, post-patch builds safely resolve any media reference inside the media directory regardless of the crafted input.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a path traversal / absolute-path issue (CWE-23) in Anki's sound-handling logic. Prior to 25.02.6, the Qt sound player and related code passed the raw tag.filename from a SoundOrVideoTag directly into os.path.join and the external player arguments, and the only transformation applied was a hooks.media_file_filter() call that did not strip directory components. Because media pathnames were assumed to be relative to the media folder, a filename containing parent-directory sequences or an absolute path could resolve outside that folder, allowing file writes to attacker-chosen locations. The upstream fix (PR #4041, commit 51476e05) adds a SoundOrVideoTag.path(media_folder) method that applies os.path.basename() to the filename before joining it to the media folder, then routes the Qt player and reviewer code through that confined path. Affected software is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:ankitects:anki:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and is bounded to releases before the 25.02.6 tag.

DescriptionNVD
In Ankitects Anki before 25.02.6, crafted sound file references could cause files to be written to arbitrary locations on Windows and Linux (media file pathnames are not necessarily relative to the media folder).
