MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the victim to open or process an attacker-crafted MP4 file containing a BIFS (Binary Format for Scenes) stream with node nesting deeper than ~1500 levels using GPAC/MP4Box before version 2.5; the recursive gf_bifs_dec_node decoder has no depth bound in vulnerable builds. Limiting factors: the vector is local (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R) - the file must actually be parsed by MP4Box, so there is no remote network trigger; impact is confined to a crash (A:H only, C:N/I:N) with no code execution or data exposure; and the file must specifically reach the BIFS decode path. No non-default configuration is needed beyond processing a file that contains BIFS content. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, low-priority availability issue, not an urgent one. The provided CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H vector (base 5.5) describes a local, low-complexity flaw with no confidentiality or integrity impact and only high availability impact (a crash), requiring user interaction to trigger. The AV:L plus UI:R combination is consistent with the description: exploitation requires a victim to run MP4Box against an attacker-supplied crafted file, so this is not a remotely-triggerable service compromise. A public POC exists (publicly available exploit code exists), which raises practical reproducibility, but there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - the POC signal and the absence of KEV should not be conflated. The upstream commit (8e7b9a3) confirms the root cause as unbounded recursion in gf_bifs_dec_node, fixed by capping BIFS tree depth at 1500, which corroborates a stack-exhaustion DoS rather than code execution. No SSVC decision data, EPSS probability, or CWE was supplied in the input, so automatability and exploitation-status framing cannot be fully evaluated. Net: a real but self-contained DoS in a file-parsing tool, appropriately mid-severity. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts an MP4 file containing a BIFS scene with excessively deep node nesting and delivers it to a victim or an automated media pipeline. When the victim parses the file with MP4Box/GPAC (before 2.5), gf_bifs_dec_node recurses without a depth limit, exhausting the stack and crashing the process. A public proof-of-concept for this crash is available (publicly available exploit code exists), and because the CVSS vector is AV:L with UI:R, the attack depends on the victim locally processing the malicious file rather than any remote network trigger. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
GPAC MP4Box before 2.5 can be crashed by a crafted MP4 file whose BIFS scene description contains deeply nested nodes, exhausting the stack in gf_bifs_dec_node and causing a denial of service. The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, so exploitation is local, requires the victim to open or process the file, and affects only availability; publicly available exploit code exists. No CISA KEV entry is indicated in the provided data.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: GPAC/MP4Box 2.5. Upgrade to version 2.5 or later; the fix adds a MAX_TREE_DEPTH of 1500 in gf_bifs_dec_node and is visible in commit 8e7b9a3a04331286b89d1803c65a2d6edc11b4c4 (issue https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3324). If upgrading is not immediately possible, do not process untrusted MP4 files that may contain BIFS scene streams, and run MP4Box in a sandboxed low-privilege environment with crash isolation; this trades functionality for risk reduction and does not eliminate the stack-exhaustion condition. Because the vector is local with user interaction, also restrict automated ingestion of untrusted media and validate file provenance. Technical ContextAI · show details
BIFS (Binary Format for Scenes) is an MPEG-4 scene description syntax decoded by GPAC/MP4Box. In vulnerable builds, gf_bifs_dec_node in src/bifs/field_decode.c recursively decodes node fields without tracking recursion depth, so a crafted BIFS stream can force stack exhaustion and abort the process. The upstream fix commit 8e7b9a3a04331286b89d1803c65a2d6edc11b4c4 adds a tree_depth counter to struct __tag_bifs_dec and rejects decoding when depth exceeds MAX_TREE_DEPTH (1500), returning GF_NON_COMPLIANT_BITSTREAM. CWE is not provided; the root cause class is uncontrolled recursion/stack overflow. The public PoC at https://github.com/sigdevel/pocs/blob/main/res/gpac/MP4Box/59/README.md demonstrates the crash path.

MP4Box parses a supplied file locally (AV:L) requiring the victim to run it (UI:R); no auth needed (PR:N); deterministic recursion (AC:L) yields only a crash, so C:N/I:N/A:H.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
A stack-based buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a buffer located on the stack than it was allocated to hold.
Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
