AnalysisAIv2 – Jul 26, 2026

Out-of-bounds read in the libarchive library leads to memory corruption or denial of service when a malicious archive stream is piped into bsdtar. The vulnerability affects libarchive versions prior to 3.8.0 and all downstream consumers including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, and OpenShift Container Platform. A local attacker must trick a user into piping crafted data into bsdtar, resulting in potential information disclosure or a crash; no active exploitation has been observed and EPSS probability is very low (0.04%).

DescriptionNVD

A vulnerability has been identified in the libarchive library. This flaw can be triggered when file streams are piped into bsdtar, potentially allowing for reading past the end of the file. This out-of-bounds read can lead to unintended consequences, including unpredictable program behavior, memory corruption, or a denial-of-service condition.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2025-5918 is a low-severity vulnerability in A vulnerability involving out-of-bounds read (CVSS 3.9). The limited severity suggests constrained impact, typically requiring specific conditions or local access for exploitation. A patch is available and can be applied during standard maintenance windows.

Recommended Action

During next maintenance window: Apply vendor patches when convenient. Verify out-of-bounds read controls are in place.

Business Impact: Low
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch during routine maintenance. Standard out-of-bounds read mitigations apply if patching is delayed.

Emergency Immediate action required. Criteria: CRITICAL + in CISA KEV (actively exploited) without patch, OR CRITICAL + EPSS > 30% without patch, OR CRITICAL + active threat signals without patch.
Act Now Prioritize within 24-48h. Criteria: in KEV with patch available, OR CRITICAL + public POC, OR HIGH + EPSS > 10%, OR CRITICAL + active threat, OR any CRITICAL severity.
This Week Schedule remediation this week. Criteria: HIGH severity (CVSS 7.0-8.9). Patch within normal change window.
This Month Plan within 30 days. Criteria: MEDIUM severity (CVSS 4.0-6.9), lower exploitation probability. Include in regular patch cycle.
Monitor Track and reassess. Criteria: LOW severity (CVSS 0.1-3.9), minimal exploitation risk. No immediate action needed.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
