DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

i2c: tegra: check msg length in SMBUS block read

For SMBUS block read, do not continue to read if the message length passed from the device is '0' or greater than the maximum allowed bytes.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel's NVIDIA Tegra I2C driver (i2c-tegra) lets a malicious or malfunctioning SMBus peripheral trigger a buffer over-read during an SMBus block read, because the driver trusted the device-supplied message length without validating it. A local attacker able to control an attached I2C/SMBus device, or to drive such a transfer, can leak adjacent kernel memory or crash the system. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; EPSS is low (0.16%, 6th percentile) and it is not on CISA KEV.

Technical ContextAI

The vulnerability lives in the Tegra I2C controller driver (drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-tegra.c) used on NVIDIA Tegra SoCs. In the SMBus protocol, a block read returns a leading length byte supplied by the slave device that tells the host how many data bytes follow (valid range 1 to I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX = 32). Before the fix the driver used this attacker-influenced length directly to continue the read, so a length of 0 or a value greater than the maximum led to reading past the intended buffer. The root-cause class is an out-of-bounds read / improper input validation (CWE-125 / CWE-20; NVD lists CWE as N/A), and the project tags classify the impact as Information Disclosure. The fix (commit 3f03f77ce688 plus stable backports) adds a bounds check that aborts the transfer when the returned length is 0 or exceeds the maximum block size.

RemediationAI

Update the Linux kernel to a stable release containing the i2c-tegra bounds-check fix; the upstream fix is commit 3f03f77ce688 with backports at the git.kernel.org stable URLs listed in the references, and Debian users should apply the update referenced in the Debian LTS advisory (https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2025/10/msg00008.html). Because the fix is delivered as kernel commits rather than one tagged product version, apply your distribution's patched kernel package and reboot. Where immediate patching is not possible, compensating controls are limited to reducing SMBus exposure: restrict physical access to the device and its I2C peripherals, avoid attaching untrusted or field-replaceable SMBus devices, and disable or unbind the Tegra I2C controller driver for buses that are not required (trade-off: this disables legitimate sensors/peripherals on that bus). Only NVIDIA Tegra SoC systems run the vulnerable driver, so non-Tegra kernels need no action for this specific issue.
