DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

virtio-net: ensure the received length does not exceed allocated size

In xdp_linearize_page, when reading the following buffers from the ring, we forget to check the received length with the true allocate size. This can lead to an out-of-bound read. This commit adds that missing check.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel virtio-net driver (through 6.16-rc3 and affected stable branches) lets a malicious or buggy virtio backend trigger a read past the allocated buffer inside xdp_linearize_page when XDP is used on the interface. The flaw stems from the driver reading follow-on ring buffers without validating that the reported received length fits within the allocated page, enabling potential information disclosure or a guest crash. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is very low (0.17%, 7th percentile), consistent with a hard-to-weaponize local kernel memory-safety bug.

Technical ContextAI

The affected component is the paravirtualized network driver (drivers/net/virtio_net.c) in the Linux kernel, used by virtual machines to communicate with a hypervisor's virtio-net backend over virtqueues. When XDP (eXpress Data Path) is attached and packets span multiple descriptors, xdp_linearize_page copies received buffers out of the ring into a contiguous page; the code failed to compare the length reported for each subsequent buffer against the true allocated size before copying. This is a classic CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read): the trust boundary is the descriptor length supplied via the shared ring, and missing bounds validation lets a copy walk past the allocation. The fix adds the missing length check before consuming each buffer.

RemediationAI

Patch available per vendor advisory: upstream fixes are merged as the eight kernel.org stable commits listed in the references (11f2d0e8, 315dbdd7, 6aca3dad, 773e95c2, 80b971be, 982beb75, bc68bc35, ddc8649d) - apply the patched point release for your specific stable branch, or on Debian install the fixed package per the debian-lts-announce advisories (msg00007/msg00008, October 2025). Because a released patched version is confirmed via stable commits, upgrading the kernel is the primary and preferred fix. If immediate patching is not possible, the practical compensating control is to avoid attaching XDP programs to virtio-net interfaces (the code path is only reached with XDP), which removes the trigger at the cost of losing XDP-based packet processing on those interfaces; additionally, only run guests against trusted hypervisor/virtio backends, since exploitation requires a malicious or malfunctioning ring provider.
