| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated user with administrative privileges in Nagios XI (PR:H) who can access the Business Process Intelligence (BPI) component and control its configuration parameters bpi_logfile and bpi_configfile. Exploitation depends on writing files with executable extensions into the webroot and having them served/executed by the web application, then using the BPI configuration editor to populate them. The principal limiting factor is the administrative authentication requirement - this is not exploitable by anonymous or low-privileged remote users; it is only reachable by (or through compromise of) a Nagios XI admin account on an instance running a version prior to 2024R1.4.2. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely high-severity flaw but with an important gating condition that tempers real-world urgency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N, full VC/VI/VA:H plus subsequent-system SC/SI/SA:H) scores 9.4, and the high score is driven mainly by the scope-changing outcome - arbitrary code execution as the web application user that can be pivoted to full host compromise. The decisive limiter is PR:H: exploitation requires an already-authenticated administrative user of Nagios XI, since the vulnerable inputs (bpi_logfile, bpi_configfile) are administrator-controlled BPI configuration parameters. This makes it far more a post-authentication privilege-to-RCE escalation / malicious-or-compromised-admin scenario than an internet-wide mass-exploitation risk. No EPSS score was provided in the input, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: real priority for organizations running affected Nagios XI where admin credentials could be phished, reused, or held by lower-trust operators, but not a drop-everything internet-perimeter emergency given the admin-authentication prerequisite. Note a conceptual mismatch to verify: the CWE is CWE-78 (OS command injection) but the described mechanism is arbitrary file creation/overwrite in the webroot with executable extensions served by the app - closer to unrestricted file upload / code injection than classic command injection. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Nagios XI administrator (or an attacker who has phished/reused admin credentials) navigates to the Business Process Intelligence component and sets the bpi_logfile or bpi_configfile parameter to a path inside the webroot with an executable extension (e.g. a .php file). They then use the BPI configuration editor to write attacker-controlled content into that file, and request the URL so the web server executes it, yielding code execution as the Nagios XI web application user and a foothold to pivot to the host OS. No public exploit code is referenced in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Nagios XI instances running versions prior to 2024R1.4.2 are exposed to a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability in the Business Process Intelligence (BPI) component, where an authenticated administrative user can exploit insufficient validation of the bpi_logfile and bpi_configfile parameters to create or overwrite executable files in the webroot and then execute them as the web application user. The flaw requires administrative privileges (PR:H) and is not exploitable by anonymous or low-privileged remote attackers; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the CVSS 4.0 score is 9.4 with a 3.1 assessment of AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. Successful exploitation yields arbitrary command execution with web application user privileges, potentially leading to full host compromise, but the administrative gating condition tempers real-world urgency compared to unauthenticated RCE flaws.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading Nagios XI to version 2024R1.4.2 or later; this is the primary fix and addresses the insufficient validation of bpi_logfile and bpi_configfile in the BPI component. Refer to the vendor security advisory at https://www.nagios.com/products/security/#nagios-xi and the changelog at https://www.nagios.com/changelog/nagios-xi/ for upgrade instructions and release details. The vulnerability requires administrative privileges, so as a compensating control, strictly limit and monitor Nagios XI admin accounts and enforce multifactor authentication; however, this does not eliminate the risk from a compromised admin account. If BPI is not required, consider disabling or restricting access to the BPI component to reduce the attack surface, though this may break business process monitoring functionality. Additionally, monitor the webroot for unexpected file creation or modification and ensure that only intended administrators can reach BPI configuration endpoints; these measures are detective and may not prevent exploitation in all cases.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in Nagios XI's Business Process Intelligence (BPI) component, which allows administrators to define business processes and configure logging and configuration file paths. The root cause is classified as CWE-78 (OS Command Injection), reflecting improper neutralization of special elements that can lead to command execution; specifically, the application fails to validate or sanitize administrator-supplied values for bpi_logfile and bpi_configfile, permitting path traversal or absolute path writes into the webroot. Because the BPI configuration editor can subsequently modify these files, an attacker with admin access can place a file with an executable extension (e.g., .php) in a web-accessible location and trigger its execution by the web server, resulting in code execution in the context of the Nagios XI web application user. The CPE data identifies affected products as nagios:nagios_xi versions prior to 2024R1.4.2, including 2024 R1, R1.0.1, R1.0.2, R1.1, R1.1.1, R1.1.2, R1.1.3, R1.1.4, and R1.1.5. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) both highlight high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts, with scope change in the 3.1 vector due to the web application user being able to affect the underlying host.

DescriptionCVE.org
Nagios XI versions prior to 2024R1.4.2 contain a remote code execution vulnerability in the Business Process Intelligence (BPI) component. Insufficient validation and sanitization of administrator-controlled BPI configuration parameters (notably bpi_logfile and bpi_configfile) allow an authenticated administrative user to cause the product to create or overwrite files within the webroot and subsequently edit them via the BPI configuration editor. When such files carry executable extensions and are served by the web application, arbitrary code may be executed in the context of the web application user. Successful exploitation results in arbitrary command execution with the privileges of the Nagios XI web application user and can be leveraged to gain further control of the underlying host operating system.
Executive ViewAI
Nagios XI deployments running versions prior to 2024R1.4.2 are affected by a critical remote code execution vulnerability in the Business Process Intelligence component. Exploitation requires administrative privileges, but a compromised or malicious admin account could execute arbitrary commands on the monitoring host, risking full compromise of monitoring data, credentials, and connected systems. Leadership should prioritize remediation because Nagios XI often has broad visibility and access across the environment.

OS command injection occurs when an application passes unsanitized user input directly into system shell commands.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
