| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to load attacker-supplied data through PatrickStar's merge_checkpoint endpoint - i.e., opening a malicious checkpoint/model file or visiting a page that triggers that load - which deserializes untrusted data (CWE-502). The limiting factors are mandatory user interaction (UI:R) and a local attack vector (AV:L): there is no remote, unauthenticated, network-triggerable path, so an attacker must socially engineer the target into processing the crafted file. No authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N), and successful exploitation yields code execution as root, but realistic risk is confined to environments where users ingest untrusted PatrickStar checkpoints. |
| Impact | Signals point to a genuine but non-urgent issue. The CVSS 3.0 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) is driven by severe impact (C:H/I:H/A:H, with code execution in the context of root per the ZDI advisory), but the vector itself tempers real-world urgency: AV:L means the attacker has no network path and AC:L/PR:N is offset by UI:R - a victim must actively open a malicious checkpoint file or visit a malicious page. The EPSS probability of 0.51% (42nd percentile) is low, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified in the provided data, so there is no evidence of widespread or active exploitation. These signals are consistent rather than conflicting: a high-impact-but-user-interaction-gated deserialization bug in a niche ML library. One caveat to verify: the only linked 'fix' reference is a GitHub commit that merely relaxes requirements.txt version pins (torch/transformers) and does not visibly patch the deserialization path, so the actual remediation and fixed version are not confirmed from available data. Net: a real priority for the small population running PatrickStar with untrusted checkpoint inputs, but not a broad emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious model checkpoint file and lures a PatrickStar user into loading it (e.g., sharing a 'pretrained' checkpoint or linking a malicious page). When the victim processes it through the merge_checkpoint endpoint, the untrusted data is deserialized and attacker-controlled code runs in the context of root. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, though the root-level impact makes the technique attractive if weaponized. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Deserialization of untrusted data in Tencent PatrickStar's merge_checkpoint endpoint lets an attacker execute arbitrary code with root privileges when a user loads a crafted checkpoint or opens a malicious page that triggers the endpoint. Exploitation requires user interaction and a local attack path; no authentication is needed, but there is no remote unauthenticated network-triggerable route. EPSS is 0.51% (42nd percentile) and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix commit 2384535503ea98cfe35ad04e20c0cfc7bf58d5d7 or upgrade to a PatrickStar release that includes it; a specific patched version number is not provided, so released patched status is not independently confirmed (upstream fix available via PR/commit). Until a fixed release is validated, avoid loading checkpoints or model files from untrusted sources, restrict merge_checkpoint use to trusted artifacts, run PatrickStar with least privilege instead of root, and execute checkpoint merging in an isolated container or sandbox without access to sensitive host data. Disabling or gating merge_checkpoint reduces exposure but may break legitimate model-merge workflows; least-privilege and sandboxing can add operational overhead and may require changes to file permissions or orchestration. Consult https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1034/ and the referenced commit for vendor guidance.
Affected ProductsAI
Tencent PatrickStar installations that process checkpoints through the merge_checkpoint endpoint are affected. No CPE strings or explicit version ranges were supplied in the available data; the upstream fix commit is 2384535503ea98cfe35ad04e20c0cfc7bf58d5d7, and the ZDI advisory ZDI-25-1034 (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1034/) is the vendor-linked disclosure. Users should treat PatrickStar versions or builds containing the unfixed merge_checkpoint code as potentially affected until a release containing the commit is confirmed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is classified as CWE-502, deserialization of untrusted data, in the merge_checkpoint functionality of Tencent PatrickStar. The endpoint processes checkpoint data without properly validating user-supplied content before deserialization, which can allow attacker-controlled objects to be instantiated during checkpoint loading; in machine-learning checkpoint tooling this commonly involves Python pickle or framework-specific loaders, though the provided advisory does not name the exact serializer. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H indicates local access, low attack complexity, no required privileges, mandatory user interaction, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. The referenced upstream commit 2384535503ea98cfe35ad04e20c0cfc7bf58d5d7 changes requirements.txt dependency pins for torch and transformers; the provided diff excerpt does not show the validation change itself, so the precise code fix is not confirmed from available evidence.

File/checkpoint-borne deserialization gives AV:L and UI:R; attacker supplies the malicious file so PR:N, and root-context code execution yields C:H/I:H/A:H.

DescriptionCVE.org
Tencent PatrickStar merge_checkpoint Deserialization of Untrusted Data Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Tencent PatrickStar. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the merge_checkpoint endpoint. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in deserialization of untrusted data. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-27182.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity flaw in Tencent PatrickStar, the checkpoint-merge component used in large model training pipelines, allows crafted checkpoint files or a malicious web page to execute code with root privileges on the machine that loads them. Because exploitation requires a user to open a malicious checkpoint or page, the risk concentrates on engineering workstations and shared training hosts where checkpoints are routinely exchanged, and any successful compromise would grant full administrative control of that system. Leadership should care because these hosts typically hold model artifacts, credentials, and access to internal training infrastructure, so a single user mistake could expose sensitive intellectual property and provide a foothold deeper in the environment.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: run PatrickStar's merge_checkpoint endpoint and any checkpoint-loading workflow as a non-root, least-privileged account inside a container or sandbox with no access to production credentials; restrict the endpoint to localhost or an allowlisted set of users and hosts; require hash/signature validation and provenance checks on all checkpoints before loading; block untrusted links and untrusted checkpoint sources at the mail and web gateway; and monitor for anomalous child processes or privilege escalation originating from PatrickStar.
