| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation is gated by a specific, non-default configuration: the administrator must have set up ADM's Notification sender to send emails to an external SMTP server via msmtp. Given that, the limiting factor is positional - the attacker must already be able to intercept and manipulate traffic between the NAS SMTP client and the SMTP server (an active man-in-the-middle on the LAN or upstream path), which the CVSS 4.0 AT:P metric reflects. There is no authentication requirement against the NAS itself (PR:N) and no user interaction, but if notification email is never configured, or the SMTP path cannot be intercepted, the vulnerability is not reachable. |
| Impact | This is a genuine-but-conditional confidentiality flaw rather than a drop-everything priority. The signals are internally consistent and all point low-to-moderate: EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code was identified in the provided data - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) is the key nuance: although PR:N means no credentials are needed on the target, the AT:P (attack requirements present) metric encodes the real gating factor - the attacker must already occupy a man-in-the-middle position on the network path between the ASUSTOR NAS and its SMTP server. That is not a widespread, internet-wide spray condition, which is why the low EPSS is coherent with the 7.0 CVSS rather than contradicting it. The vendor-supplied 4.0 vector places the heavier impact on subsequent systems (SC:H/SI:H) - i.e., the SMTP account and mail infrastructure whose credentials leak - while the vulnerable NAS itself takes only limited confidentiality impact (VC:L). Bottom line: real but situational; prioritize for environments where NAS notification email is configured and where an attacker could plausibly sit on the SMTP path (shared LAN, untrusted segment, or cleartext-capable upstream). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An administrator configures ADM's Notification sender to send alert emails through an external SMTP server via msmtp. Because msmtp does not properly validate the server's TLS/SSL certificate, an attacker positioned on the network path presents a forged certificate, which the client accepts, allowing the attacker to decrypt and capture the SMTP session - including the account credentials and email contents. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and success requires the attacker to already hold a man-in-the-middle position. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
ASUSTOR ADM network-attached storage devices can leak SMTP credentials and notification email contents to a network man-in-the-middle because the msmtp mail client used by ADM's Notification feature does not properly validate TLS/SSL certificates (CWE-295). Affected builds are ADM 4.1.0 through 4.3.3.RKD2 and ADM 5.0.0 through 5.1.0.RN42, and the flaw is only reachable when an administrator has configured notifications to relay mail to an external SMTP server via msmtp and an attacker can already intercept the NAS-to-SMTP path (reflected in the CVSS 4.0 AT:P metric and the assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N profile). Impact is confidentiality-only, no authentication against the NAS is required (PR:N / no user interaction), EPSS is low at 0.18% (7th percentile), and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis (no CISA KEV listing and no POC reported).
RemediationAI
Update ADM to a firmware release after the affected ranges shown in ASUSTOR security advisory 49 (https://www.asustor.com/security/security_advisory_detail?id=49) - that is, a build newer than ADM 4.3.3.RKD2 in the 4.x line or newer than ADM 5.1.0.RN42 in the 5.x line; consult the advisory for the exact fixed version rather than assuming the boundary builds themselves are patched. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls should target the two preconditions: stop using msmtp to relay to an external SMTP server (disable Notification email delivery or point it at a local/relay-only SMTP service that uses a certificate the NAS can pin), accepting the trade-off of losing email alerting; and constrain the network path so the SMTP conversation cannot be intercepted or redirected, for example by forcing SMTP submission through a trusted internal relay on a segmented management VLAN or over a tunneled path, accepting the operational overhead of maintaining that infrastructure. Because exploitation requires the attacker to already sit on the SMTP path, enforcing network segmentation and monitoring for certificate-substitution or TLS-downgrade behavior toward outbound port 25/465/587 provides useful detection while patching proceeds.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is msmtp, a lightweight SMTP client that ASUSTOR ADM's Notification subsystem invokes to submit outbound email to an external mail relay. CWE-295 (Improper Certificate Validation) describes the root cause: when establishing the TLS/SSL session to the SMTP server, the client fails to correctly validate the presented certificate, so an adversary positioned on the network path can substitute a forged or self-signed certificate and terminate the encrypted session without detection. This turns a normally encrypted SMTP exchange into a cleartext-attackable channel in which SMTP authentication credentials and message bodies (which may contain NAS alerts, hostnames, or other operational detail) are exposed. The vendor's CPE entries identify the affected platform as ASUSTOR Data Master (cpe:2.3:o:asustor:data_master), i.e., the ADM operating system firmware rather than any separate mail product. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (7.0) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment agree that this is a network-reachable confidentiality issue (C:H / VC:L, SC:H) with integrity and availability untouched, and that exploitability depends on the attacker's position on the SMTP path rather than on any NAS privilege.

DescriptionCVE.org
When the user set the Notification's sender to send emails to the SMTP server via msmtp, an improper validated TLS/SSL certificates allows an attacker who can intercept network traffic between the SMTP client and server to execute a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, which may obtain the sensitive information of the SMTP.
Affected products and versions include: from ADM 4.1.0 through ADM 4.3.3.RKD2 as well as from ADM 5.0.0 through ADM 5.1.0.RN42.
Executive ViewAI
ASUSTOR network-attached storage devices running ADM 4.1.0 through 4.3.3.RKD2 and 5.0.0 through 5.1.0.RN42 can expose the SMTP credentials and notification email content used by the built-in Notification feature to anyone who can position themselves on the network path between the device and the outbound mail server. Because these credentials often belong to a shared corporate mail relay, a single compromised NAS could hand an adversary a reusable foothold for phishing or further mail-based attacks against the wider organization. Leadership should treat this as a credential-exposure risk concentrated in storage and IT operations teams that have enabled external SMTP notifications, rather than as a broadly exploitable remote compromise of the device itself.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or redirect the Notification mail relay on affected ADM builds; rotate credentials for any SMTP account configured on the device; require the NAS-to-SMTP path to traverse an encrypted tunnel (VPN/IPsec) or a trusted internal segment where a network man-in-the-middle cannot intercept traffic; restrict outbound SMTP from NAS management networks at the firewall; and monitor mail relay logs for anomalous authentication or sending patterns.
