| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the Windows WebDAV capability (the WebClient service / WebDAV handling) to be enabled and network-reachable; this service is not enabled by default on all Windows SKUs, which limits exposure. The attacker must be authenticated at a low privilege level (CVSS PR:L) - exploitation is not available to fully unauthenticated attackers. No user interaction is required (UI:N), and no non-default feature beyond WebDAV itself is specified. Patched builds are enumerated per product (e.g., Windows Server 2022 >=10.0.20348.5761, Windows 11 24H2 >=10.0.26100.9711); applying the vendor update removes the condition. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely high-priority vulnerability by composition of signals, though not an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) describes network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation requiring only low-level authentication and no user interaction, yielding full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H) - consistent with the description's 'execute code over a network.' CISA's SSVC framework corroborates the severity on impact (Technical Impact: total) but tempers urgency: Exploitation is rated 'none' (no observed exploitation) and Automatable 'no' (not amenable to mass, scripted exploitation), which aligns with the requirement for prior authentication. No EPSS score was provided, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC, so real-world exploitation pressure currently appears low despite the high base score. Note a metadata conflict: the single tag provided is 'Information Disclosure,' yet both the description (code execution) and the full C/I/A:H impact indicate remote code execution, not mere disclosure - the tag understates the vulnerability. Net: treat as a priority patch for any host where the WebDAV/WebClient service is reachable and attackers can obtain low-privilege credentials, but the authentication prerequisite and non-automatable nature make it a serious-but-not-wormable issue rather than a drop-everything zero-day. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already holds low-privilege credentials (or has compromised a standard account) reaches a Windows host exposing the WebDAV service over the network and submits a crafted request exploiting improper path-equivalence resolution to run arbitrary code in the service context. No public exploit code has been identified, and CVSS AC:L suggests the exploitation technique, once known, would be straightforward and reliable. Because UI:N, no victim interaction is needed once the attacker is authenticated. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Remote code execution in Microsoft Windows WebDAV lets a low-privileged, authenticated attacker reach the code-execution path over the network by exploiting improper resolution of path equivalence (CWE-41), yielding high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 8.8). The flaw spans supported Windows client and server releases from Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2012 through Windows 11 26H2 and Windows Server 2025, but only where the WebDAV/WebClient capability is enabled and network-reachable, since that service is not on by default across all SKUs and exploitation requires an existing low-privileged account. There is no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis (CISA SSVC exploitation: none); vendor patches that lift the affected builds above the enclosed fix levels are available from Microsoft. Note that source tagging labels this issue Information Disclosure, which understates the assessed code-execution impact.

Vendor-released patches are available from Microsoft, so update each affected release to at least the fixed build: Windows Server 2022 10.0.20348.5761, Windows Server 2025 10.0.26100.33650, Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 1809 10.0.17763.9376, Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 1607 10.0.14393.9612, Windows Server 2012 R2 6.3.9600.23470, Windows Server 2012 6.2.9200.26434, Windows 11 23H2 10.0.22631.7652, Windows 11 24H2 10.0.26100.9711, Windows 11 25H2 10.0.26200.9711, Windows 11 26H1 10.0.28000.3231, Windows 11 26H2 10.0.26300.9711, Windows 10 21H2 10.0.19044.7807 and Windows 10 22H2 10.0.19044.7807, following the MSRC advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-88136. If the update cannot be applied on schedule, disable the WebClient (WebDAV) service and stop the WebClient driver on hosts with no WebDAV requirement, which removes the reachable attack surface at the cost of breaking access to WebDAV and HTTP-based UNC paths for any dependent application, and block outbound WebDAV traffic where it is not business-justified; because exploitation requires low-privileged authenticated access and there is no public exploit code, scoping these restrictions to servers that genuinely use WebDAV keeps the trade-off contained. Tightening which low-privileged accounts can reach WebDAV-enabled hosts reduces likelihood but is not a substitute for patching, and no emergency out-of-band action beyond normal prioritization is indicated by the current exploitation signals.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause class is CWE-41, Improper Resolution of Path Equivalence, inside Windows WebDAV handling, including the WebClient service and related WebDAV path processing. Path equivalence flaws arise when a component normalizes, compares or authorizes paths without accounting for alternate but equivalent representations such as different separators, trailing characters, case folding, dot segments or encoded characters, so a crafted WebDAV request can resolve to a different resource than the one the equivalence or authorization check evaluated. In the Windows WebDAV context this lets an authenticated low-privileged network attacker drive the component into executing code in the context of the WebDAV operation rather than merely disclosing data, which is why the assessed vector carries C:H/I:H/A:H despite the source tag of Information Disclosure. Exposure is bounded by feature availability: the WebDAV capability must be enabled and reachable over the network, and the attacker must hold low-privileged authenticated access, with no user interaction required (UI:N) and no non-default feature beyond WebDAV itself specified in the assessment. No CPE strings were supplied with the input, so affected product identification rests on the vendor build thresholds and the EUVD tracking entry EUVD-2026-99657.

Improper resolution of path equivalence in WebDAV allows an authorized attacker to execute code over a network.
Executive ViewAI
Microsoft Windows WebDAV contains a high-severity remote code execution flaw that could let an authenticated low-privileged user execute code on affected systems, causing high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. Organizations are exposed only where affected Windows client or server releases (Windows 10 1607 through Windows 11 26H2 and Windows Server 2012 through Windows Server 2025) have the optional WebDAV/WebClient capability enabled and network-reachable. Although no public exploit or active exploitation is currently identified-no public exploit identified at time of analysis-the broad product range and potential for significant system compromise warrant expedited patching and exposure reduction.
