| Exploitation Conditions | No special conditions - remote unauthenticated exploitation against default configurations of Misskey, because the fetch-rss API is publicly reachable and, in affected versions (12.112.1 through pre-2026.7.0), had no rate limiting, no response-size cap, and no concurrency limit. The flaw is exploitable even when federation is disabled, removing a common mitigating assumption. The only limiting factors are that the instance must expose the API to the attacker (standard for a running Misskey server) and that impact is resource exhaustion/amplification/probing rather than code execution or direct data theft; upgrading to 2026.7.0 fully remediates it. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a genuinely low-barrier flaw: network-reachable, low complexity, no authentication, no user interaction - any internet host can hit the fetch-rss endpoint. The impact profile is primarily availability (VA:H) with secondary low confidentiality/availability on other systems (SC:L/SA:L), consistent with CWE-405 (asymmetric resource consumption) rather than data theft; the 'Information Disclosure' tag overstates the confidentiality angle, which is limited to network reconnaissance via outbound-request probing. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - this is a high-CVSS issue whose real-world priority is tempered by the absence of exploitation signals and by the product's modest deployment footprint. The 8.7 score is driven by trivial exploitability plus amplification/DoS potential, not by severe direct impact; treat as a meaningful patch priority for exposed Misskey instances but not an emergency on par with KEV-listed RCEs. Conflicting signal to note: the tag labels this 'Information Disclosure' while the CVSS and description both point to resource exhaustion and SSRF-style probing as the dominant effects. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker repeatedly calls the public fetch-rss API with crafted URLs, forcing the Misskey instance to open unbounded concurrent outbound HTTP requests and perform synchronous XML parsing until CPU, sockets, or memory are exhausted. By pointing the URL at a third-party server the attacker turns the instance into a request-amplification relay, and by targeting internal/RFC1918 addresses they can probe which network services are reachable even when federation is disabled. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the fix commit confirms the missing rate limit, size cap, and concurrency cap that made this trivially abusable. |

Unauthenticated resource exhaustion and outbound request amplification in Misskey's fetch-rss API affect versions 12.112.1 through releases prior to 2026.7.0. Any remote attacker can repeatedly call the publicly reachable endpoint, which in affected versions had no rate limiting, no response-size cap, and no concurrency bound, forcing the instance to open unbounded outbound HTTP connections and perform synchronous XML parsing; this drains instance CPU, memory, and socket resources, can be used as an amplification vector against third-party servers, and can probe network-reachable services even when federation is disabled. CVSS 4.0 scores the flaw 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, high availability impact with limited scope change), no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fully remediated by upgrading to 2026.7.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Misskey 2026.7.0, which adds rate limiting (300 requests per 60 seconds), an 8 KiB URL length cap, a 1 MiB response-size limit, a maximum of 32 concurrent outbound fetches, in-flight request de-duplication, URL normalization that rejects non-http(s) schemes and embedded credentials, and asynchronous XML parsing - see https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/releases/tag/2026.7.0 and the advisory https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/security/advisories/GHSA-4x7v-qx8f-g3p8. If immediate upgrading is not possible, block or heavily rate-limit POST /api/fetch-rss at the reverse proxy or WAF for untrusted clients (side effect: legitimate RSS preview and feed-subscription features degrade or stop working for ordinary users), restrict the instance's outbound egress with a firewall, proxy allowlist, or deny-by-default policy so the server cannot reach internal RFC1918, loopback, link-local, or cloud metadata addresses (side effect: breaks federation and legitimate feed fetching to unlisted hosts, so the allowlist must be maintained), and cap the request rate per source IP at the edge to blunt resource-exhaustion bursts (side effect: shared-NAT users may be throttled together). Because the flaw is reachable even when federation is disabled, disabling federation is not an effective mitigation; the fetch-rss endpoint itself must be patched, disabled, or gated until the upgrade is applied. Also ensure the Node.js process is memory- and CPU-capped (container limits, systemd MemoryMax) so that a single abusive instance cannot starve co-hosted services.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability lives in Misskey's backend API endpoint packages/backend/src/server/api/endpoints/fetch-rss.ts, which is intended to let clients subscribe to external RSS/Atom feeds. In affected releases the handler passed a caller-supplied URL straight to HttpRequestService.send and then fed the raw response body into rss-parser's synchronous parseString, with no URL-length validation, no response-size limit, no per-account or per-IP rate limit, no global cap on concurrent fetches, and no de-duplication of identical in-flight requests. That combination maps to CWE-405 (Asymmetric Resource Consumption / Amplification): a tiny client request causes disproportionately large server-side work, because each call triggers a full outbound HTTP transaction plus CPU-bound XML parsing, and the cost is amplified when the target is slow, large, or repeatedly requested. Because the parsed document is processed synchronously with the default callback-based xml2js configuration, the Node.js event loop is blocked, compounding the availability impact. Fix commit a12ee2e5d72c40252e11a164b2231667c9697667 introduces a 300-per-60-second limit, MAX_URL_LENGTH of 8192, MAX_RESPONSE_SIZE of 1 MiB, MAX_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS of 32, an in-flight request map keyed by normalized URL, URL normalization that rejects non-http(s) schemes and embedded credentials and strips fragments, async xml2js parsing, a post-redirect final-URL protocol check, and a dedicated service that no longer binds to an authenticated user context. The scope-change component (SC:L/SA:L) reflects that the same primitive can be turned outward to hammer or fingerprint third-party and internal-network services.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Misskey is an open source, federated social media platform. From 12.112.1 until 2026.7.0, the unauthenticated fetch-rss API lacks rate limiting and response-size restrictions and performs synchronous XML parsing. An attacker can trigger unbounded outbound HTTP requests and synchronous parsing, exhausting instance resources, amplifying requests toward third-party servers, or probing network-reachable services even when federation is disabled. This issue is fixed in version 2026.7.0.

Executive ViewAI
Misskey instances running versions 12.112.1 through releases prior to 2026.7.0 are exposed to unauthenticated, remotely triggered resource exhaustion through the publicly reachable fetch-rss API, which in affected versions lacks rate limiting, response-size caps, and concurrency bounds. Any internet-connected attacker can repeatedly call the endpoint to drive server CPU, memory, and socket consumption, degrading or taking down the instance for all users, while also using the server as an outbound amplification vector against third parties and as a probe for network-reachable services even where federation is disabled. Leadership should care because this is a public, unauthenticated availability risk against production community infrastructure, with reputational, hosting-cost, and potential third-party liability implications if the instance is used as an attack relay.
No vendor-released patch was identified in the provided patch data at time of analysis; interim mitigations are reverse-proxy or WAF rate limiting, request-size caps, and concurrency limits on the fetch-rss endpoint, blocking or disabling public access to that endpoint, restricting outbound egress to approved destinations to limit amplification and network probing, and reducing the exposed attack surface by taking affected instances off the public internet until upgrade. Upgrading to the fixed version 2026.7.0 referenced in the advisory provides full remediation.
