MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a Misskey user (versions 12.0.0 up to 2026.7.0) has an RSS widget, RSS ticker widget, or RSS status bar configured to consume a feed whose item content the attacker controls or can inject into, AND that the user actively clicks a feed-item link crafted with an unsafe scheme (e.g. javascript:). The pre-patch code failed to restrict link protocols to http:/https: before rendering, so a javascript: link executes on click. Limiting factors: active user interaction is mandatory (CVSS UI:A - no execution without a click), the attacker must influence feed content trusted by the victim, and an RSS widget must be in use, so default installs without configured RSS feeds are not exposed. The flaw is fully fixed in 2026.7.0. |
| Impact | This is a client-side DOM XSS (CWE-79) in Misskey's RSS widgets (WidgetRss, WidgetRssTicker, statusbar-rss). The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N, score 8.5 HIGH) is network-reachable with low complexity and no privileges, but critically requires active user interaction (UI:A) - the victim must click a malicious feed-item link. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; this is NOT confirmed active exploitation. The practical risk is tempered by two real-world preconditions not captured by the headline score: the attacker must control the content of an RSS feed that a victim has configured into a widget, and the victim must then click the crafted link. The source-code evidence confirms the flaw is genuine - the patched code wraps URL parsing in tryParseUrl() and gates rendering on ['http:','https:'].includes(protocol), blocking javascript:/data: schemes. Net assessment: a legitimate, well-documented client-side XSS worth patching, but the interaction requirement and feed-control precondition make it opportunistic/targeted rather than a mass-exploitation priority. No conflicting signals in the data; the main gap is absent EPSS/KEV/POC telemetry. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes or compromises an RSS feed that a Misskey user has added to an RSS widget or status bar, and injects a feed item whose link uses an unsafe scheme such as javascript:. When the victim clicks that item link in the rendered RSS widget, the script executes in the victim's authenticated Misskey session. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, but the vendor patch and advisory confirm the underlying defect. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Client-side DOM cross-site scripting in Misskey's RSS widgets lets an attacker who controls or can inject into a feed that a victim has subscribed to execute arbitrary script in the victim's browser when the victim clicks a crafted feed-item link. All Misskey versions from 12.0.0 up to 2026.7.0 are affected, specifically the WidgetRss, WidgetRssTicker, and statusbar-rss components, which rendered feed-item links without restricting the URL scheme; the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) indicates unauthenticated remote exploitation that still requires a user to actively click the malicious link. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in version 2026.7.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Misskey to version 2026.7.0, which contains the scheme-validation fix; see the release notes at https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/releases/tag/2026.7.0, the upstream commit https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/commit/8dd59a8c06da49b8f302d902d73d04397ee29366, PR https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/pull/17831, and the GitHub security advisory https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/security/advisories/GHSA-p73x-6qrq-34jc. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the practical compensating controls are to remove or disable the RSS widget, RSS ticker widget, and RSS status-bar reader from all user dashboards - this fully eliminates the attack surface but removes the feed-reading feature for users - and, where the widgets must remain, restrict them to feeds hosted on infrastructure the organization controls or trusts, since the prerequisite is attacker influence over feed item content; note that restricting feeds reduces convenience and is only a partial mitigation because any compromise of a trusted feed reintroduces the risk. Because exploitation requires a click on a crafted link, user awareness training against clicking unusual scheme links in RSS widgets offers marginal additional protection but should not be treated as a fix. No vendor patch alternative or backport is described in the available advisory data.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Misskey is an open-source, federated social media platform whose web client is built with Vue and TypeScript. Its RSS integration (WidgetRss.vue, WidgetRssTicker.vue, and the status-bar RSS reader statusbar-rss.vue) fetches external feeds and renders each item's link so the user can navigate to the source article. Before the fix, the code constructed link targets with new URL(item.link, base) and then checked ['http:', 'https:'].includes(itemUrl.protocol) - but any link string that failed to parse would throw, and, more importantly, the check was applied inconsistently so that a javascript: scheme link supplied by a malicious or compromised feed could still be rendered and executed on click. This is a classic CWE-79 cross-site scripting condition realized as DOM-based XSS: untrusted feed content flows into the DOM as a clickable link without scheme validation. The upstream commit 8dd59a8c06da49b8f302d902d73d04397ee29366 introduces a tryParseUrl helper in packages/frontend-shared/js/url.ts that safely returns null instead of throwing on malformed input, and rewrites all three RSS components to require itemUrl != null && ['http:', 'https:'].includes(itemUrl.protocol) before rendering, with a new unit test (url.test.ts) covering absolute URLs, relative URLs resolved against a base, and invalid input.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Misskey is an open source, federated social media platform. From 12.0.0 until 2026.7.0, the RSS components display feed item links from configured feeds without verifying their URL schemes. Missing URL scheme verification allows an attacker who controls feed content to provide an unsafe-scheme link that causes script execution when a user clicks it in an RSS widget. This issue is fixed in version 2026.7.0.

Executive ViewAI
Misskey, the federated social networking platform, contains a cross-site scripting flaw in its RSS feed widgets that affects every release from 12.0.0 through 2026.7.0. A malicious or compromised feed that a user has subscribed to can deliver a crafted link which, once clicked, runs attacker-supplied script inside that user's authenticated browser session - potentially exposing account credentials, private messages, and the ability to act as the compromised user. Leadership should care because community members and staff who use Misskey's RSS widgets are the primary exposure, and a single successful click can lead to account takeover and reputational damage across a federated network where trust is the core asset.
