| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable only on Misskey instances (versions 2025.9.1 up to but not including 2025.12.0-alpha.2) that are run WITHOUT a trusted reverse proxy - or behind an untrusted one - while the trustProxy config option remains at its insecure default value of true. Under those conditions an attacker spoofs the X-Forwarded-For header on requests to the /api/signin-flow login endpoint to evade per-IP rate limiting. LIMITING FACTORS: instances correctly fronted by a trusted reverse proxy are not affected; operators on 2025.9.1-2025.11.1 can fully mitigate by setting trustProxy:false in the config file; upgrading to 2025.12.0-alpha.2+ makes trustProxy:false the default. No authentication or user interaction is required to send the forged header, but impact is limited to defeating rate limiting (enabling credential brute-force), not direct authentication bypass. |
| Impact | Multiple signals converge on a moderate, config-dependent priority rather than a top-tier emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, VC:N/VI:L/VA:L, score 6.9 Medium) indicates a remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity attack with only limited integrity/availability impact and no confidentiality impact - consistent with a rate-limiting bypass (CWE-307) rather than direct code execution or data disclosure. A public exploit exists: the GHSA advisory includes a working PoC against the /api/signin-flow endpoint, so 'publicly available exploit code exists.' However, this is NOT in CISA KEV and there is no evidence of active exploitation, so it should be treated as POC-available, not actively weaponized - these are distinct signals. No EPSS score was provided, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this data. The key mitigating factor is that real-world impact is gated entirely by deployment: instances fronted by a correctly trusted reverse proxy are not affected, and the harm is enabling credential brute-force (facilitating, not directly performing, account compromise). Net: a legitimate issue to patch promptly for exposed/misconfigured instances, but its network-unauthenticated CVSS slightly overstates universal risk because exploitability depends on the proxy/trustProxy configuration. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targets a Misskey instance that has no reverse proxy (or an untrusted one) and whose trustProxy setting is at the insecure pre-2025.12.0-alpha.2 default of true. Because a public PoC exists, the attacker sends repeated POST requests to /api/signin-flow, each carrying a forged X-Forwarded-For header with a rotating IP, defeating the per-IP login rate limiter. This lets them brute-force account passwords (including 'admin') without being throttled, since the attack is network-based, unauthenticated, and low-complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Login rate-limit bypass in Misskey (versions 2025.9.1 through 2025.11.x, and up to but not including 2025.12.0-alpha.2) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to evade per-IP throttling on the /api/signin-flow endpoint by supplying a forged X-Forwarded-For header, enabling sustained credential brute-force against user accounts. The flaw is config-dependent: it only affects instances running without a reverse proxy, or behind an untrusted one, while the trustProxy setting retains its insecure default of true; deployments correctly fronted by a trusted reverse proxy are not affected. Publicly available exploit code exists in the form of a documented PoC request, and the vendor has released a fix in v2025.12.0-alpha.2 that flips the trustProxy default to false.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade to Misskey v2025.12.0-alpha.2 or later, where the trustProxy default is flipped to false and spoofed X-Forwarded-For headers are no longer honored unless explicitly enabled (Vendor-released patch: 2025.12.0-alpha.2). If an immediate upgrade is not possible and you are running v2025.9.1 through v2025.11.1, set trustProxy: false in your Misskey configuration file; this is the vendor-documented workaround and fully mitigates the issue on those releases at the cost of ignoring proxy-supplied client IPs, so ensure your trusted proxy is the one terminating client connections and that any IP-based logging or moderation rules are adjusted accordingly. Operators who do front Misskey with a trusted reverse proxy are not affected, but because the insecure default may have been applied silently, they should audit their config to confirm whether trustProxy was ever overridden and set it to an explicit, intentional value - note that leaving trustProxy with an explicit true while the application is reachable without a trusted proxy re-introduces the bypass. Defense-in-depth measures include applying account lockout or CAPTCHA at the reverse-proxy or WAF layer, restricting direct access to the Misskey backend port so only the trusted proxy can reach it, and monitoring for repeated failed authentication from varying apparent source IPs. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-307 (Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts), realized through Misskey's application of the Fastify web framework's trustProxy option. In Fastify, enabling trustProxy causes the server to accept the client-supplied X-Forwarded-For header as the authoritative client IP; the framework explicitly warns against trusting X-Forwarded-For unless a trusted reverse proxy sits in front of the application. In packages/backend/src/server/ServerService.ts the value was resolved as trustProxy: this.config.trustProxy ?? true, so any instance that had not explicitly configured the option defaulted to trusting all proxies. Combined with the login throttling logic in packages/backend/src/server/api/SigninApiService.ts, an attacker could send requests to /api/signin-flow with an arbitrary X-Forwarded-For value (for example 127.1.1.31, 1.1.1.12) and have each request appear to originate from a different source IP, defeating the rate limiter intended to slow password guessing. The commit 5512898463fa8487b9e6488912f35102b91f25f7 changes the fallback to this.config.trustProxy ?? false and updates .config/example.yml to document the new non-trusting default, so that spoofed headers are ignored unless the operator deliberately opts in.

DescriptionCVE.org
Misskey is an open source, federated social media platform. Attackers who use an untrusted reverse proxy or not using a reverse proxy at all can bypass IP rate limiting by adding a forged X-Forwarded-For header. Starting with version 2025.9.1, an option (trustProxy) has been added in config file to prevent this from happening. However, it is initialized with an insecure default value before version 2025.12.0-alpha.2, making it still vulnerable if the configuration is not set correctly. This is patched in v2025.12.0-alpha.2 by flipping default value of trustProxy to false. Users of a trusted reverse proxy who are unsure if they manually overode this value should check their config for optimal behavior. Users are running Misskey with a trusted reverse proxy should not be affected by this vulnerability. From v2025.9.1 to v2025.11.1, workaround is available. Set trustProxy: false in config file.
