Exploitation Conditions

No special conditions beyond the target running an affected zebrad node (Zebra 6.4.0 up to but not including 6.4.2) with its peer-to-peer network interface reachable by the attacker - exploitation is remote and unauthenticated, and the malicious tx message is accepted pre-handshake, so no peer trust, credentials, or completed connection negotiation is required. The specific trigger is a version-6 transaction encoding a pre-NU6.3 consensus branch ID (e.g., Nu5/Nu6/Nu6.1/Nu6.2 wire branch IDs), which selects an Orchard bundle version the V6 writer cannot re-serialize. Limiting factors are narrow: the flaw affects only the Zebra implementation (not other Zcash nodes), only the 6.4.0-6.4.1 versions, and impact is limited to crashing the node (availability only) with no data exposure or code execution; patched 6.4.2 nodes reject the malformed transaction at parse time.

Impact

This is a genuine, actionable availability risk rather than an inflated high-CVSS score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms the strongest exploitability profile possible: network-reachable, low complexity, no attack requirements, no privileges, no user interaction - and the description independently corroborates this, stating that unauthenticated peers can send a single pre-handshake tx message to crash zebrad. The impact is confined to availability (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) - this is a CWE-617 reachable assertion (an infallible-size-computation path that trips an expect and aborts the process), not a memory-corruption or RCE primitive, so there is no confidentiality or integrity exposure. The aggravating factor is repeatability: the node can be re-crashed after each restart, enabling a sustained, trivially automatable DoS loop. Weighing the signals against each other: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - the priority here is driven by the ease and reliability of exploitation plus the clear patch availability, not by observed in-the-wild activity. No signals are in conflict; the CVSS vector and the prose description agree on unauthenticated remote reachability. Missing data: EPSS/KEV/POC are all absent (absence is not evidence of low risk for a newly disclosed, easily triggered flaw).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker connects to a target zebrad node's peer-to-peer port and, before completing the handshake, sends a single malformed version-6 transaction carrying a pre-NU6.3 consensus branch ID. During UnminedTx construction the Orchard bundle re-serialization fails, tripping an expect that aborts the process and knocks the node offline; the attacker simply reconnects and resends the message after each automatic restart to maintain the outage. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the single-packet, no-auth trigger makes weaponization trivial.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Remote, unauthenticated denial of service in Zcash Foundation's Zebra full node: versions 6.4.0 through 6.4.1 abort when a peer sends a single version-6 transaction that carries a pre-NU6.3 consensus branch ID (Nu5/Nu6/Nu6.1/Nu6.2), because the malformed Orchard bundle cannot be re-serialized during UnminedTx size computation and the resulting error trips an expect() that terminates zebrad. The malicious tx message is accepted pre-handshake, so the attacker needs only network reachability to the node's P2P port, no credentials or completed peer negotiation, and the crash can be repeated after every restart for sustained unavailability; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the trigger is a trivial single message and the flaw is specific to Zebra 6.4.0-6.4.1 (patched nodes reject the transaction at parse time).

RemediationAI

Primary fix: upgrade to Zebra 6.4.2, the vendor-released patched version, which rejects malformed V6 transactions with pre-NU6.3 branch IDs during deserialization before the expect() can be reached (vendor advisory GHSA-h5rr-8pqv-grp9; fix commit 008abac5c99e872f283450d596d95e37851df49a). There is no configuration toggle that disables the offending code path, so patching is the only complete remediation. As a compensating control for nodes that cannot be upgraded immediately, restrict inbound P2P access: firewall the Zcash peer port (default 8233) to a known allow-list of trusted peers or an outbound-only / sentry-node topology, since the crash is delivered in a pre-handshake tx message and therefore requires the attacker to be able to open a connection to the node; the trade-off is reduced peer diversity and slower block/tip propagation, and any allow-list that still admits untrusted peers leaves the node exposed. Additional short-term mitigations include fronting the node with connection-rate limiting or an L7 proxy that inspects the first message (fragile, since the message is valid at the wire framing level), and running zebrad under a supervisor with automatic restart - but because the attacker can repeat the crash after each restart, supervisor restart only reduces, and does not eliminate, the availability impact. Monitor for abrupt zebrad aborts accompanied by a panic in the transaction size / UnminedTx path as an indicator of attempted exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Zebra is the Rust implementation of a Zcash consensus node, and the vulnerable code path lives in the zebra-chain/zebrad transaction handling. ZIP-229 introduces transaction version 6 at network upgrade NU6.3 and, per the Zcash protocol specification, a V6 transaction's 4-byte little-endian consensus branch ID must correspond to the epoch of the containing block; the commit message notes that "older branch IDs select Orchard bundle versions that the V6 writer rejects." Zebra 6.4.0-6.4.1 deserialized such transactions successfully, but during UnminedTx construction the size computation treated re-serialization of the Orchard bundle as infallible. When presented with a pre-NU6.3 branch ID, re-serialization returns an error, which hits an expect() and aborts the process - the CWE-617 (Reachable Assertion) root-cause class. The upstream fix adds an explicit check in deserialize_and_check that rejects version-6 transactions whose branch ID maps to a network upgrade earlier than Nu6_3, returning SerializationError::Parse("v6 transaction must have a NU6.3 or later consensus branch ID") on both the with-context and without-context parsing entry points, restoring the invariant that every successfully parsed transaction can be serialized. Note the affected surface is the Zebra implementation only; other Zcash node software is not implicated by this code path.

DescriptionCVE.org

ZcashFoundation Zebra 6.4.0 before 6.4.2 parses version 6 transactions carrying a pre-NU6.3 consensus branch ID, but the size computation during UnminedTx construction treats re-serialization of the Orchard bundle as infallible, so the resulting error trips an expect that aborts zebrad. Unauthenticated peers can send a single pre-handshake tx message to crash the node, and can repeat this after each restart.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A single malformed peer message can crash Zcash Foundation's Zebra full node software in versions 6.4.0 through 6.4.1, and because the same message can be replayed after every restart, affected operators face sustained node unavailability rather than a one-time outage. Any organization whose Zcash operations depend on continuous node availability - exchanges and custodians processing deposits and withdrawals, mining pools, wallet and payment providers, and node-hosting infrastructure teams - should treat this as a direct availability risk to critical transaction processing. A vendor patch is available, so exposure is driven primarily by how quickly affected nodes are upgraded.
