|
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a zebrad node (version before 6.2.1) that accepts inbound peer connections and participates in mempool transaction relay - the normal operating mode for a Zcash full node on the P2P network. No authentication, credentials, or user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N): any unauthenticated peer can push V6 transactions with invalid zero-filled Orchard/Ironwood Halo2 proofs into the shared unprioritized verification queue. The primary limiting factors are that the node must be network-reachable and running an affected version, and that impact is confined to availability (verification stalling / falling behind the chain tip) rather than data compromise; nodes not exposed to untrusted peers or already upgraded to 6.2.1 are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a genuine availability-focused priority for affected Zcash node operators, though not a universal emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) is internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable, unauthenticated peer can trivially flood the shared unprioritized Halo2 verification queue, and the impact is confined to availability (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity effect - consistent with CWE-405 (asymmetric resource consumption). The low attack complexity and lack of any authentication or user interaction make exploitation mechanically easy, which drives the 8.7 score. However, no EPSS probability, KEV listing, or POC availability is present in the input, so there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation - status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The 'Information Disclosure' tag directly contradicts the CVSS vector (VC:N) and CWE-405; this appears to be a mislabel and should not factor into risk. Net: treat as a high-urgency DoS patch for internet-facing Zcash nodes, but real-world blast radius is bounded by the niche deployment footprint of Zebra rather than any disclosure or RCE exposure. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker opens unauthenticated peer connections to one or more internet-reachable zebrad nodes running a version before 6.2.1 and continuously relays zero-fee V6 mempool transactions carrying zero-filled Orchard and Ironwood (Halo2) proofs. Because these invalid proofs enter the same unprioritized verification queue as legitimate work, the node spends CPU validating junk and falls behind the chain tip. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only standard P2P message crafting. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Zcash Foundation's Zebra full node (zebrad) before 6.2.1 can be stalled in block verification by any unauthenticated peer on the P2P network: an attacker pushes zero-fee V6 mempool transactions containing invalid, zero-filled Orchard and Ironwood Halo2 proofs, which drain the shared, unprioritized proof-verification queue and cause the node to fall behind the chain tip. Impact is confined to availability (CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) - there is no confidentiality or integrity loss - and exploitation requires only that the node accepts untrusted inbound peers and relays mempool transactions, i.e. its normal operating mode. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not confirmed actively exploited; the issue is a resource-amplification/denial-of-service class (CWE-405) rather than data compromise.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Zebra to 6.2.1 or later, which is the version boundary given in the CVE record (affected range zebra 0 < 6.2.1) and the fix available from the vendor; patch availability is confirmed in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-2p4c-3q4q-p463 and the VulnCheck advisory. Until an upgrade can be scheduled, the most effective compensating control is to stop accepting untrusted inbound P2P traffic on affected nodes - firewall or ACL the Zcash P2P port (8233 by default) to a known-good peer set, or disconnect from untrusted peers - with the trade-off that a node so restricted loses peer diversity and may sync less robustly and contribute less to network propagation. A second option is to disable mempool transaction relay or run the node in a mode that does not relay unconfirmed V6 shielded transactions, which removes the attack surface described here but degrades the node's usefulness to the network and may interfere with transaction-dependent tooling; note that this is a network-behavior change, not a protocol-level fix, so it should only be a stopgap. Neither workaround addresses the underlying unprioritized-queue design (CWE-405), so upgrading to 6.2.1 remains the primary and only complete remediation; monitor the vendor advisory for any backport or configuration guidance for operators unable to upgrade promptly.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Zebra is the Zcash Foundation's Rust-based alternative full-node implementation, and its mempool accepts V6 transaction formats that carry shielded-pool proofs. Orchard (and, per the advisory, Ironwood) shielded transfers are validated using the Halo2 zk-SNARK proving system, whose verification is computationally expensive and is performed through a shared verification queue. The root cause is CWE-405, Asymmetric Resource Consumption (Amplification): cheap-to-generate, zero-fee inputs - specifically transactions with zero-filled Orchard and Ironwood Halo2 proofs - are admitted into the same unprioritized verification queue used by legitimate transactions, so an attacker can force the node to expend disproportionate CPU on verification work that is guaranteed to fail. Because the queue is not prioritized or rate-limited per peer and the transactions carry no fee, honest verification work is starved and the node's tip-following/block-verification pipeline falls behind. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:zcashfoundation:zebra:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, with EUVD recording the affected range as zebra 0 through 6.2.1-exclusive. This class of flaw is a protocol-level P2P resource-exhaustion issue, not a memory-corruption or cryptographic-break defect, and the independent assessment rates it as an availability-only impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Zebra (zebrad) before 6.2.1 contains an asymmetric resource consumption vulnerability that allows unauthenticated peers to stall block verification by pushing V6 mempool transactions with invalid Halo2 proofs. Attackers can flood the shared unprioritized Halo2 verification queue with zero-fee transactions carrying zero-filled Orchard and Ironwood proofs, causing nodes to fall behind the chain tip.

Executive ViewAI
Zebra, the Zcash Foundation's full node implementation (zebrad), can be driven behind the chain tip by any unauthenticated peer on the P2P network when running versions prior to 6.2.1, using ordinary mempool traffic that overwhelms the node's shared proof-verification queue. The effect is availability-only: nodes that validate Zcash transactions in default configuration - such as those operated by exchanges, custodians, and payment processors - may lag or stall, delaying deposits, withdrawals, and settlement visibility, while no customer data or ledger integrity is at risk. Because the trigger is normal peer traffic and a vendor fix already exists, leadership should treat this as a patch-management and service-continuity matter rather than an active breach.
