Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that an Open WebUI instance be configured with a non-direct, non-Ollama connection - specifically an OAuth-mode OpenAI-compatible connection, an OpenAPI tool server, or a terminal server - pointing to a server the attacker operates or can observe. In affected versions (0.6.27 before 0.11.4) the backend 'get_headers_and_cookies' function in routers/openai.py forwarded 'request.cookies' (the full browser cookie jar, including session cookies) unconditionally on such connections; the fix adds a 'forward_cookies' flag that defaults to false. Limiting factors: the attacker must control or monitor a destination server that an administrator has deliberately connected to, and cookies only leak when users actually route requests through that connection (passive user interaction). Instances that connect only to fully trusted, operator-controlled endpoints are not realistically exploitable; direct and Ollama connections are unaffected by the forwarding path.

Impact

This is a credible, above-average-priority issue but not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H) scores 7.6 and captures the key nuance well: network reachable and low complexity, but gated by an attack requirement (AT:P) - a connection to the attacker-controlled destination server must already be configured - and by passive user interaction (UI:P), since cookies leak on routine user requests rather than attacker-forced actions. The high confidentiality AND integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H) is justified because leaked session cookies enable full account takeover, explicitly including administrators. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - there is no evidence of active exploitation. The most important caveat: the 'attacker' here is effectively the operator of the destination server (an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, OpenAPI tool server, or terminal server) that an Open WebUI admin chose to connect to. Risk is therefore highest where instances connect to untrusted, third-party, or shared-hosting endpoints, and much lower where all connected servers are fully trusted and operator-controlled. Because exploitation is trivial once such a connection exists and yields admin takeover, it should be patched promptly despite the absence of KEV/EPSS/POC signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An Open WebUI administrator configures an OAuth-mode connection to a third-party OpenAI-compatible API, OpenAPI tool server, or terminal server. As users (including admins) make routine requests through that connection, Open WebUI forwards their entire browser cookie jar - including session cookies - to the destination server. The server operator logs these forwarded cookies and replays them to hijack the users' Open WebUI sessions, including administrator accounts. No public exploit code is referenced; exploitation requires only that the operator observe traffic they already receive.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Open WebUI versions 0.6.27 through 0.11.3 forward the entire browser cookie jar - session cookies included - to OpenAI-compatible connections, OpenAPI tool servers, and terminal servers that are configured in OAuth mode, letting the operator of such a destination server capture those cookies from routine requests and replay them to hijack accounts, including administrators. The issue is unauthenticated from the attacker's perspective (CVSS 4.0 7.6; independently assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), but it is constrained: the attacker must control or monitor an endpoint an administrator has deliberately connected to, and a victim user must route a request through that connection. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not confirmed actively exploited (not in CISA KEV); a vendor-released patch exists in 0.11.4.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Open WebUI to 0.11.4 or later, the vendor-released fix version, which gates cookie forwarding behind a per-connection 'forward_cookies' flag that defaults to off; the change is implemented across commits f9f815c86220f809fad5ee1300c44f55dea74c79, b71744b17823f7a3a9a64cb363e79a7164ed5b23, and 3cda47cdb449aac970426f0929c9e5f8bb8bd807, tracked by advisory GHSA-gqfh-jxvw-74rp. Until patching is possible, the highest-value compensating control is to avoid pointing any non-direct, non-Ollama connection (OAuth-mode OpenAI-compatible, OpenAPI tool server, or terminal server) at an endpoint outside your trust boundary; because pre-0.11.4 builds have no toggle and forward request.cookies unconditionally on those connections, there is no configuration-only way to disable forwarding on vulnerable versions, so the choice is patching or strictly limiting which destination servers administrators may add. Operators who must remain unpatched can reduce blast radius by rotating session cookies and the application's session/JWT signing secret after any exposure to an untrusted destination, narrowing session lifetime and enforcing re-authentication, and using a reverse proxy egress rule that strips the Cookie header on traffic leaving Open WebUI toward third-party endpoints - accepting that this breaks legitimate authenticated upstreams that rely on forwarded cookies. Audit existing connection configurations for destination servers you do not fully control, and treat any such connection as a potential credential-capture channel.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) in the backend function get_headers_and_cookies in backend/open_webui/routers/openai.py, which unconditionally assigned cookies = request.cookies and attached the caller's full browser cookie jar to outbound requests for non-direct, non-Ollama connections - i.e. OAuth-mode OpenAI-compatible connections, OpenAPI tool servers, and terminal servers. Because Open WebUI stores its session state in cookies, those values are directly replayable credentials rather than innocuous tracking data. The upstream fix changes the assignment to cookies = getattr(request, 'cookies', {}) if config.get('forward_cookies', False) else {} and removes the unconditional assignments, introducing an explicit per-connection 'forward_cookies' flag that defaults to false. The corresponding frontend change in src/lib/components/AddConnectionModal.svelte adds a 'Forward cookies' toggle, initializes forwardCookies = false, and only includes the key for non-direct, non-Ollama connections, so cookie forwarding becomes an opt-in behavior that operators must consciously enable. Affected builds are identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:open-webui:open-webui (all versions in the vulnerable range); direct connections and Ollama connections never took the vulnerable forwarding path and are unaffected. CVSS 4.0 metrics AV:N/PR:N/UI:P indicate a network-reachable flaw requiring no privileges but some passive user interaction, matching the requirement that users actually send requests through the tainted connection.

DescriptionCVE.org

Open WebUI from 0.6.27 before 0.11.4 contains an information disclosure vulnerability that allows destination servers to obtain user session cookies by receiving the full browser cookie jar on OAuth-mode connections. Operators of OpenAI-compatible connections, OpenAPI tool servers or terminal servers can capture forwarded session cookies from routine requests and replay them to hijack accounts, including administrators.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Open WebUI versions 0.6.27 through 0.11.3 expose session cookies to any OAuth-connected endpoint an administrator has deliberately configured, allowing attackers who control those endpoints to hijack user and administrator accounts. This could result in unauthorized access to sensitive data and full compromise of the Open WebUI environment. Leadership should prioritize patching to version 0.11.4 to prevent potential account takeover and data breaches.
