| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to hold a valid LogicalDOC account (PR:L) in order to obtain a legitimate password-recovery ticket via the PswRecovery servlet; the limiting factor is therefore the ability to register or otherwise acquire any low-privileged account. Once a ticket is held, no special configuration is needed - the servlet accepts an arbitrary userId parameter and does not bind the ticket to the requesting user, so any user (including administrators) can be targeted against default configurations through version 9.3. The practical constraint on real-world risk is this authentication prerequisite plus whether self-service account registration or exposed login is reachable by the attacker. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 5.3, CVSS:4.0 base) improper authorization flaw (CWE-640, broken password recovery) in LogicalDOC Community Edition. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) indicates remote, low-complexity exploitation requiring only a low-privileged authenticated account, with no user interaction - a realistic barrier that is low in deployments allowing self-registration but higher where accounts are tightly provisioned. Impact is rated Low across confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L), yet the described outcome is functionally an account-takeover primitive against arbitrary users including administrators, so the business impact can exceed what the Low ratings suggest. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no probabilistic or confirmed-exploitation signal; no public proof-of-concept was supplied in the input either, though a vendor patch commit and a VulnCheck advisory precisely document the root cause. Overall this is a credible, patch-now issue for exposed LogicalDOC instances (low attack complexity, admin-password-reset potential) rather than a mass-exploitation emergency, given the authentication prerequisite, limited product footprint, and absence of KEV/EPSS escalation signals. EPSS is simply absent (not low) - do not treat its omission as evidence of low risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds or self-registers any low-privileged LogicalDOC account requests a legitimate password-recovery ticket for their own account, then replays that ticket while substituting an administrator's userId. Because the PswRecovery servlet never verifies the ticket belongs to the supplied userId, the server generates and emails a new password for the admin, forcibly resetting it, locking out the legitimate admin, and disclosing the victim's email address. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is trivially reproducible from the published patch diff. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Improper authorization in the PswRecovery servlet of LogicalDOC Community Edition through 9.3 lets any user who can hold a valid low-privileged account hijack the password-recovery flow and reset credentials for arbitrary accounts, including administrators. Recovery tickets are issued but never bound to the requesting user, so an attacker can obtain a ticket for their own account and replay it with any arbitrary userId parameter, forcing the victim's password to a newly generated value, locking the victim out, and disclosing the victim's registered email address in the servlet response. The flaw is rated CVSS 5.3 (CVSS 4.0 base) with an assessed 3.1 vector of AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L; exploitation requires a valid LogicalDOC account, no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - the vendor-supplied patch reference is commit afc8554e6654865295bffc8f080c7cb899caf057 at https://github.com/logicaldoc/community/commit/afc8554e6654865295bffc8f080c7cb899caf057, which corrects the PswRecovery servlet in logicaldoc-webapp; deploy that commit or a build containing it and consult the repository discussion at https://github.com/logicaldoc/community/discussions/119 and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/logicaldoc-community-edition-through-9.3-forced-password-reset-via-unbound-pswrecovery-ticket for the exact release guidance, since no independently confirmed patched version number is published alongside the CVE. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, compensate by blocking or un-deploying the PswRecovery servlet at the reverse proxy or application container (trade-off: self-service password recovery stops working and must be handled manually by administrators), and by disabling self-service account registration so that attackers cannot cheaply satisfy the PR:L prerequisite (trade-off: onboarding friction for legitimate users). Additional hardening includes restricting network reachability to the recovery endpoint to trusted ranges, requiring out-of-band confirmation for administrative password resets, auditing TicketDAO records for PSW_RECOVERY tickets reused across differing userId values, and enrolling privileged accounts in MFA so that a forced credential change does not by itself grant account takeover; each control narrows exposure but none removes the underlying missing ticket-to-user binding, which only the patch resolves.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is rooted in CWE-640 (Weak Password Recovery Mechanism for Forgotten Password) and manifests as a missing authorization binding inside the Java servlet com.logicaldoc.web.PswRecovery shipped in the logicaldoc-webapp module of LogicalDOC Community Edition. The servlet's doGet handler accepts a ticketId and a userId request parameter, looks up the ticket through TicketDAO, verifies only that the ticket exists, is of type Ticket.PSW_RECOVERY, and has not expired, then immediately resolves the user via UserDAO.findById(Long.parseLong(userId)) and calls sendEmail. At no point does the code compare the ticket's owning user with the userId supplied in the request, so the ticket acts as a bearer token that authorizes a password reset for whoever the caller names. Once the ticket is consumed the servlet increments its count, disables it (setEnabled(false)), generates a new random password through PasswordGenerator using tenant-configured complexity settings, stores the new decoded password on the target User with passwordChanged and passwordExpired flags, and mails the plaintext password to the victim while echoing 'A message was sent to <email>' back to the caller - producing the information disclosure of the victim's email address. The public fix commit afc8554e6654865295bffc8f080c7cb899caf057 touches exactly this file, confirming the defect is the unbound ticket-to-user association; the affected code path is present in the 9.3 branch as shown by the referenced blob line.

DescriptionCVE.org
LogicalDOC Community Edition through 9.3 contains an improper authorization vulnerability in the PswRecovery servlet that fails to bind password recovery tickets to the requesting user. Attackers can obtain a ticket for their own account and reuse it with any userId, including administrators, to reset victims' passwords, lock them out, and reveal their email addresses.
