MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the site administrator had contao.search.index_protected ENABLED (so protected pages were written into tl_search with per-row authorization metadata) and then changed it to DISABLED, which drops the protected-row filter in ModuleSearch without purging the previously indexed rows. The attacker then simply uses the front-end ModuleSearch module (no authentication, no user interaction). Limiting factors: this is NOT a default-configuration flaw - it depends on that specific configuration transition and on protected content having been indexed beforehand; sites that never enabled protected indexing, or that never disabled it, or that reindexed after the change, are not affected. Impact is limited to disclosure of page titles, URLs, and indexed text snippets - the protected pages themselves still enforce authorization and are not accessible. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity information-disclosure issue (CWE-200) whose real-world risk is genuinely low despite being network-reachable and unauthenticated. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 5.3) reflects remote unauthenticated reach with only low confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact, and no scope change. Critically, exploitation is gated on a specific operator action: contao.search.index_protected must have been changed from enabled to disabled while protected pages were already indexed in tl_search - a non-default configuration transition the attacker cannot cause themselves, which the scored AC:L arguably understates. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input: there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The vendor advisory (GHSA-x2rp-9qf7-2fmq) and the linked commit confirm the root cause and fix, so the technical facts are well-substantiated, but the impact is bounded - the description explicitly states this exposes search metadata and indexed text, NOT page-access bypass, since protected pages still return an authorization response. Net: a legitimate but low-priority patching item, not an emergency; prioritize sites that have actually toggled index_protected off. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated visitor to a Contao site uses the front-end ModuleSearch form on an installation where the administrator previously indexed protected pages and later set contao.search.index_protected to disabled. The search results return titles, URLs, and context snippets from protected pages that remain in tl_search, leaking restricted content metadata without any authentication or user interaction. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the attack requires only ordinary search queries once the vulnerable configuration state exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Information disclosure in Contao CMS allows unauthenticated front-end visitors to read the titles, URLs, and indexed text snippets of protected pages through the ModuleSearch search module. The exposure only occurs on sites that previously enabled contao.search.index_protected (so protected pages were written into the tl_search index with per-row authorization metadata) and then disabled that setting without purging the stale index rows; the affected versions are 4.0.0 through the 5.3.x branch before 5.3.50 and 5.7.x before 5.7.12, with fixes released in 5.3.50 and 5.7.12. Exploitation is unauthenticated and requires no user interaction, but there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the underlying protected pages still enforce their own authorization checks, and the real-world risk is genuinely low because it depends on that specific configuration transition.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix by upgrading to Contao 5.3.50 or 5.7.12, which adds the missing protected-row filter in ModuleSearch (upstream commit 572686a113bca60f92cf2d0496cf3a74d0b6b457); the vendor advisory is https://github.com/contao/contao/security/advisories/GHSA-x2rp-9qf7-2fmq and the fixed releases are https://github.com/contao/contao/releases/tag/5.3.50 and https://github.com/contao/contao/releases/tag/5.7.12. If patching must be deferred, the most direct compensating control is to purge or fully rebuild the search index after changing contao.search.index_protected from enabled to disabled, for example by clearing the tl_search table and re-running the Contao search indexer from the back end - this removes the stale protected rows that carry the leaked metadata, at the cost of temporarily serving empty or incomplete search results and consuming indexing resources; alternatively, keep index_protected enabled so the filter remains active, accepting that protected pages stay represented in the index. Restricting or disabling the front-end search module for untrusted visitors is a blunt fallback that degrades site usability, and manually deleting rows in tl_search where the protected flag is set achieves the same effect as a reindex but must be repeated after any future indexing run. Because the protected pages themselves still enforce authorization, no additional access-control tuning is required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Contao's front-end search is implemented by the ModuleSearch module, which queries the tl_search index table populated during indexing. When the site setting contao.search.index_protected is enabled, rows for access-protected pages are written into tl_search together with per-row authorization metadata recording that protection. The vulnerable code path (fixed in core-bundle/contao/modules/ModuleSearch.php by commit 572686a113bca60f92cf2d0496cf3a74d0b6b457) failed to re-apply an authorization filter once that setting was turned off, so the protected-row filter simply disappeared while the previously indexed protected rows remained in the database. The commit adds an else branch that calls applyFilter(static function ($v) { return empty($v['protected']); }) to drop rows flagged as protected when protected indexing is disabled. This is fundamentally a CWE-200 exposure of sensitive information: search metadata and cached indexed text are leaked, not the pages themselves - because the protected pages continue to return their normal authorization response, no access-control bypass occurs. The assessed root cause is a configuration-transition state-handling defect, which is why the independent assessment rates it AC:H rather than AC:L: the leak only manifests in the window between disabling the setting and either reindexing or patching.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Contao is an Open Source CMS. From version 4.0.0 until 5.3.50 and 5.7.12, ModuleSearch can disclose protected page titles, URLs, and indexed context snippets to unauthenticated visitors when contao.search.index_protected is changed from enabled to disabled. Authorization metadata is stored per row in tl_search, but disabling the setting removes the protected-row filter without deleting rows indexed while protection was enabled. The protected pages continue to return an authorization response, so this issue exposes search metadata and indexed text rather than bypassing page access. This issue is fixed in versions 5.3.50 and 5.7.12.
